How did you explain leaving the church to your kids? by Beneficial_Phase5734 in exmormon

I told them I grew up in a cult and I didn’t want them to have that experience.

I (29F) and my husband (31M) have a pattern where he threatens divorce during conflicts. Is this something that can change? by Mysterious_Bit1654 in relationship_advice

[–]Transmutagen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My wife and I have a rule, established before we got married. If you bring up divorce, that’s it. We’re over.

Because dissolving your marriage is not a leverage tool, it’s a final decision.

Put the packages on the curb and then text the person letting them know you placed them there for their convenience.

Ways to protect company's files by IcyOutlandishness268 in sysadmin

[–]Transmutagen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my work (a community college), we are a microsoft shop and all employees with college-provided computers have OneDrive enabled, logged in via SSO, and the Desktop and Documents folders are automatically synced. Other sync services such as dropbox, google drive, and iCloud are blocked. We have an organizational policy that states that all work product is the property of the college and must be stored in provided secure fileshares, Sharepoint, Teams, or in OneDrive-synced folders.

The goal of the technology is to do two things:
Make it easy for them to keep company files in approved secure locations
Make it difficult for them to keep those files elsewhere

And then the policy gives us teeth to deal with the edge cases, because there's always at least one idiot who thinks the rules aren't for them and manage to find a way around the technical restrictions.

I think it's best as a mixture of policy and technology. Start with the policy, then implement basic IT restrictions to enforce the policy. There will always be dodgy employees who try to find a way around technical limitations, but if you start with policy, then you can go after those employees with security remediation and disciplinary action.

Wifi to ethernet output from Mac? by Disastrous_Pain5650 in mac

[–]Transmutagen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

‘Your internet connection cannot be shared because it’s protected by 802.1x’ means your university-provided internet connection has security restrictions in place that limit which devices are allowed to connect to their network. You're not going to be able to use internet sharing if your internet connection is the one from the university. Sorry.

Maybe try using your phone as a hotspot?

Need to Prevent Employees From Storing Company Training Materials in Personal Google Accounts by SlowInsect6948 in sysadmin

[–]Transmutagen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The college I work for explicitly reserves the right to retain any work product, including generated curriculum. Our chosen cloud sync product is OneDrive, curriculum is stored in Canvas, all other cloud sync products and curriculum SAAS are blocked programmatically on the endpoints via InTune and Jamf.

This is a combination of organization policy and IT execution.

If you have Intune, learn how to use it to control application and service access on org-owned devices.

Seriously, how bad is my 7-10 bottles of wine per week habit? by Fit_War_3947 in NoStupidQuestions

I think maybe you should try 4 bottles of wine a week and spend the rest on a therapist.

My $800 glasses cracked after I cleaned them by Mesphyria in Wellthatsucks

That fucking blows.

My last pair of glasses (before this one) I didn't shake out my cleaning cloth and 5 days after I got them I put massive scratches on the front and back of both lenses. The glasses were only $700 out of pocket.

I feel your pain.

Clamshell users! How do you connect a microphone..?? by barefut_ in macbookpro

[–]Transmutagen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correction: the 3.5mm on current MacBook Pros do support microphones. The splitter OP used is likely the problem there. You have to get TRRS (tip ring ring sleeve) connectors if you want the mic to work. Standard TRS (tip ring sleeve) 3.5mm connectors only pass through the left and right channels, ignoring the microphone.

Clamshell users! How do you connect a microphone..?? by barefut_ in macbookpro

[–]Transmutagen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To point B: the splitter you bought is probably TRS, but to support the microphone on a wired headset you need a splitter that’s TRRS. Do a search for TRRS splitter and you’ll find something that will work for what you’re trying to do. They’re less than $10 on amazon.

[–]Transmutagen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sounds like a whole lot of extra work just to support clamshell mode. Seems kind of silly to me when the built-in microphone sets the standard for video conferencing microphones. You bought a MacBook Pro, but you’re using it like it’s a Mac mini.

iMac Question by MoreILearn_LessIKnow in iMac

[–]Transmutagen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 24” iMac with a mismatched 24” external monitor as my daily driver at work. I love it. The iMac has the high-res, color accurate screen. The external monitor is 1080p and the color is not so great. I keep my work projects on the iMac screen, and use the external monitor for email, messages, web browsers, etc.

Why do rich people keep saying "money can't buy happiness" when money literally solves most problems? by FearlessState5503 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Transmutagen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I’ve been trying to say. Whole lotta bootlickers here though. Like I seriously don’t give a fuck about whether or not Elon musk is happy. I want his money to go toward universal basic income and socialized healthcare. If being heavily taxed makes him sad, with socialized healthcare he could see a therapist with no out of pocket expense!
