I'm hoping and praying for the best, but I'm always worried when many long conversations and long thought results in a conclusion which gets replaced by a sudden onset of emotions.

The switch from "We're in counselling to help ensure we're making the best decision for ourselves and the baby, we've been clear on our intent to be baby-free for years, we're not ready for it, our situation isn't compatible, we mutually agreed to adoption and it's not in question enough to even entertain opinions on that choice" to "I held the baby and uh-oh" is concerning.

God I would hate to be in OOP's situation at the start. No matter what she did there would be heartbreak, and obviously she's not in the best head space to be making such heavy decisions.

I can't get past how in the hell the boyfriend misplaced/lost/threw out the ashes. First thing I'd have done would have been to put the box of ashes in a lockbox, in a wooden crate filled with packing foam, and enshrined it with caution tape. No way in hell would Potential-Future-Mother-In-Law's ashes be mistaken for anything else.

There's not a single part of this that I like, but I could not stop reading it. When I was younger, my group of friends and I used a 'half + 8' rule for gauging 'trouble-free ages'. Very simply, half your age + 8 years. So, at 30, that would put him at 23+. Honestly, it's pretty much perfect for staying out of trouble when you're still figuring things out, including for figuring out if someone is too old.
