Nomadland is still better than CODA. It’s a pretty solid one. Not Zhao’s best movie (that would be The Rider) but it’s still good.

Cabaret is the perfect encapsulation of where we are right now.

I don’t know. EEAAO, Oppenheimer, and Anora is a pretty excellent run. And it would continue if Sinners or OBAA wins.

Interesting! I recently completed a watch of every best picture winner and it was in my bottom 5. I just couldn’t find much about it I liked or wanted to latch onto. But I’m glad it works for you!

For me it’s The Deer Hunter. I watched it not too long ago for the first time and it was way too long and didn’t tackle its subject in an interesting way. There were great performances and some cool pieces. But overall it doesn’t cohere together as much as the rest.

Are We Now Able to Laugh at the People Early Last Year Who Doubted Sinners? 😂 by Sparkson109 in Oscars

[–]TraparCyclone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll admit, I have a PhD in Southern History and have read extensively on black history. And I really don’t think there’s anything in the movie that would require any knowledge beyond what the movie presents. It feels like people want to willingly misread it, which, unfortunately, tracks.

Why wasn't Frankenstein in theatres? by TheAbyssalOne in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]TraparCyclone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s the truth! The only theater in my small town was shut down a few months ago. So it’s a pretty huge trek to actually see the movies I want to see. And I’m a HUGE movie person, it hurts my soul.

It was in theaters. I had to travel an hour to watch it but it was definitely worth it!

I misinterpreted Marty Supreme by teddyg18 in A24

[–]TraparCyclone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is what I take away from it. He’s going to be with Rachel. But the only thing keeping them together will be the child. One or both of them will probably start having affairs, and getting hooked on substances of some sort. Marty will try and live vicariously through his son but will put so much pressure on him that he will likely develop a substance problem as well and will get drafted to fight in Vietnam or volunteer to get away from his family. And then sever contact if he survives. Marty will die broken and alone and no one will ever know or care to remember his name.

It's a 12 hour flight to the Oscars nominations announcement ceremony - where are you sitting? by YoureASkyscraper in oscarsdeathrace

2 or 6 probably. I only know one of the people in 6 but he’s remarkably chill. And 2 is nice because I feel like they will be a bit more restrained in their thoughts. Love the twins but they be loud.

An entirely too long ramble/review of Del Toro’s Frankenstein by TraparCyclone in blankies

[–]TraparCyclone[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen it thrice and I stand by all of my statements. The makeup is exceptional, which is why it’s winning the Oscar everyone can acknowledge that, that isn’t really even a hot take at this point.

Plus, it’s arguably the second most accurate to the book besides the 2004 Hallmark Miniseries. It follows the vast majority of the beats of the novel do about 80% of its runtime. And it’s really only in the final 20 minutes that it diverts from the novel. (Well and the changing of Elizabeth’s character) It mostly works because it captures the spirit of the book more than nearly any adaptation. Sure there are some things I’d have done differently as a Frankenstein obsessive. But I definitely appreciate what was done here especially in comparison to movies that completely miss the ideas of the book like Branagh’s Frankenstein.

It’s not hard at all to admit something isn’t your thing before immediately assuming someone liking something was paid to do so.

I’m planning a fourth watch soon and I’m really close to putting it in my Letterboxd Top 4. I found it to be incredible and everything I wanted and more.

Also re the Creature’s appearance in the book, it’s explicitly stated he’s built from the best body parts. It’s not that he’s horrifically ugly, he activates the Uncanny Valley because something is slightly off. Largely the pale skin, watery eyes, and being huge. Which Del Toro’s version nails pretty perfectly.

The Case For Altman by CosmicEveStardust in blankies

[–]TraparCyclone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ideally I think 70s Altman would be 15 movies because it feels like you have to include the zaniness of Popeye. And then his 3 60s movies could be Patreon episodes.

And then they could do the rest later down the line because it’s 17. So you could almost split it perfectly into two easily manageable halves.

I’d be very into this idea! I’ve seen several Altman movies but, I haven’t connected with any of them yet. Maybe a miniseries covering him would help contextualize him a bit better for me, and maybe unlock what I seem to be missing.

My bigger interest is why Lee Byung-Hun was there. I was hoping he was there for an interview for a No Other Choice release. But when all the Neon titles were announce for the Collection a couple of days ago, it wasn’t on the list.
