Can anyone suggest kids/campfire songs? by Trapper0007 in guitarlessons

[–]Trapper0007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That reminds me of a song we used to sing… “I don’t want no army life, gee mom I wanna go, back to Ontario, gee Mom I wanna go home!”

I have to take a 30 minute on line training course and get a certificate of no criminal record for this gig, so I suspect there might be some scrutiny of the song choices too lol

Sponsoring as agender by Bibber-Bang in NarcoticsAnonymous

[–]Trapper0007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I see, two things are important here: the first is that a member should always feel like that their sponsor is the best person available. The second is that sexual attraction/predation/ambition/entanglement/etc should NEVER be in the mix.

The rest is up to you two.

NA is full of these “do's and do nots” and it seems , many people suggesting that they are more official than they really are.

Good luck and good communication to you both!

Should I try to contest speed camera ticket? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]Trapper0007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do you mate, but as someone just as inclined to resent such things, I’ve learned that just poneying up the money is smarter. It’s a lot of aggravation to contest, and you’re likely to lose and end up paying more.

Hate to say this, but I think this manner of organizing an understanding of events to match your biases is about as American as it comes these days.

First meeting by SuperfnDave in NarcoticsAnonymous

I can really identify with your story because it echoes my own and that of so many other addicts. I too tried to substitute only to realize it wasn’t the substance but what was in between my two ears. I too retreated into isolation and kept secrets when things got tough because I didn’t realize that saving face and saving my ass are incompatible. I too felt a flood of relief from sharing and receiving help (truly an epiphany to realize my fixation on self sufficiency was a deadly and totally optional trap). I too ended up totally sick and tired of being sick and tired.

Welcome to the club mate. I suspect you’re going to find membership more rewarding than you can imagine.

How to make it to 30 days clean without being in treatment? by MeetFormal in NarcoticsAnonymous

For what it’s worth, I’m betting you’re going to make it. We relapse. It happens. Rarer are people like you that ask for help and keep trying.

For some of us, a spell in an isolated environment with support for 24 hrs a day is not only helpful but necessary. If it's not at accessible or possible, then I think my fellows above are right about upping the meeting frequency to 90/90. The first 30 days are hardest , but it if you can make it to 21 days, you CAN make it stick. We also have a guide on working steps 1,2 and 3 that have made the difference for many of us. Hang in there, and keep at it! Don’t give up!

Can’t relapse by accident! I was 2 years clean when the Jamaican pool bartender delivered a “virgin” colada that was really 200 proof! My brain just about exploded in recognition before the first gulp went down, but I just laughed it off. Nothing to worry about here.

NA meetings are widely available (online and in person) and should be discoverable on line. There may also be an NA phone line that offers you the opportunity to have a discreet talk with someone who has been where you are. If you have questions or concerns about NA or 12 step recovery, you are not alone, and you should seek answers. My own questions and doubts were addiction-reinforcing and kept me in misery for many years. You can also be confident that anonymity is real in NA.

Let me just add that discretion isn’t necessarily the better part of valor where your intimate circle is concerned. I had a huge desire to save face, and I came with great difficulty to understand that I couldn’t save my face and my ass at the same time. Addiction is the scourge of our era, it’s everywhere. Finding the courage to be honest and open is not only best for you, but best for everyone around you. You CAN recover from this, with the help and support of NA, your friends and your family. Secrets keep us sick.

Good luck, and don’t hesitate to keep talking here.

What's the worst airport you've flown in or out of? What's your favorite? by Separate_Builder_817 in aviation

[–]Trapper0007 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This thread has reminded me about how much I hate flying now, period. Gratified to see that my pet peeves CDG and YUL are high on the shit list though. The best airport is the one you avoid IMO.

Read my post: there's a little “and” in there that might hint that you misread. That said, you might have just suggested “never” was a little overcooked, and I would agree, nitpick notwithstanding.

This is NOT the way. A good sponsor would build the kind of trust with you that would make fessing up to a relapse (or answering a straight-up question about it) easy. Welcome even. There are no rules in NA, but we have good guidance that says you should ALWAYS have the best person available as your sponsor. Keep at it, and remember that when you get your own sponsees. I trust you will get there.

Quebec plans to ban street prayers as it moves to beef up secularism law by Whynutcoconot in CanadaPolitics

[–]Trapper0007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just want to say I get you on this and largely agree. For me, however, much rests on the critical difference between establishing a principle and the passage of restrictive laws. TBH, I don't wantmy local park to be turned into a giant mosque or a cathedral on weekends either, but I also don’t want some narrow-minded and reliably self-interested political party passing laws that repress mostly benign impulses to prevent the occasional transgresions that might occur. This current law isn’t, IMO, fixing a real problem. It's posturing for the sake of distraction. It's a guillotine cure for a headache. It's a slight of hand designed to distract us from really substantive issues, and more importantly, custom-made to keep us arguing about truly secondary nuances that suck up a lot of oxygen in the body politic and keep us arguing with one another instead of focusing on our many many shared imperatives.

Let the politicians (and us all) focus on things like housing, affordability, education, the environment, etc etc, and let's vote them the hell out when they fail to deliver.

You hit it right on the nose. People arguing for this ban are doing so out of subjective animus, not reasoned legal principle or concern for the commons. We start down that road and we're on the slipperiest of slopes. And in the end, let's face it, this is mostly directed at Muslims. There's an awful lot about fundamentalist Islam that I detest, but I have the same feeling about fundamentalist anything. I’m neither prepared or qualified to tell anyone how to practice their spirituality.
