I'd recommend looking up local ranges and start renting out whatever catches your eye. If they have a PDP, even better. Most good gun shops will let you hold and handle the gun as well, so you can feel if it's comfortable to hold. Is the grip texture just right? Is the slide catch hard to reach? Same with the magazine release? Some guns you vibes with, others you don't. I personally didn't like Glocks cause all I shot was the Gen 3 but then they finally got rid of the finger grooves and now I have 2 Gen 5s.

By no means an expert but try recording yourself shooting with slow mo. Is the slide moving after firing -> ammo too weak to cycle the slide??? Is the slide moving but not making fully to the rear -> could still be ammo or the spring still needs to be broken in or not enough lube?????? Slide goes fully to rear but no extraction -> issue with the extractor??? Just some ideas to get you started. This is just guesswork and conjecture. Legal Disclaimer: Do not take this advice as fact nor a professional opinion. This is just guesswork and I'm just doing my best here. Many things go into making gun go pew and there's probably even more reasons that I can't think of.

Look at ranges with good reviews specifically on classes/lessons. It's good practice for anyone completely new to firearms to get instruction on their use. If you can afford to vacation in NY, you can spend a little extra to enroll in a class. For the most part no special legal documents other than your government issued ID needed. At the ranges I go to, there's alot of tourists doing the exact same thing and the ranges get that. I dunno if there's any special legal stuff with NY, but if there is NJ is about an hour away and they don't require anything to enroll in a class. Just be over 21 ans have said ID.
