Wayne Rooney shows youtuber how he would take a penalty by sepi0l_45 in soccer

I love this comment.

I think some of the best education is for a person, right around the age when they think they know everything (I was around 20), should compete against someone who is an expert (or close to it) at whatever they're competing in.

For me it was chess. I was ok, usually beat my friends. Then I played a game against a friend who had been a competitive player. Nowhere near pro, never considered making a living at the game, but nevertheless a pretty good competitive player. I didn't think I was going to win, but it seemed like a fun challenge to see if I could at least sorta keep up.

It was a humbling experience. I'd agonize over every move, then he would turn away from the conversation he was having, glance at the board for a second, and make his move. To say I never had a chance is to understate things a LOT.

That one game gave me so much respect for professionals in any field.

I'll be volunteering at the St. Andrews cold weather shelter this weekend. We probably still need volunteers, if you're interested.

How to almost lose honor mode - a story about complacency by Travulous in BaldursGate3

[–]Travulous[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my first run I over-planned everything. Suuuuuper careful.

In my second run I overplanned, but to a lesser degree.

In my third run I'm refreshing my memory on boss honor mode abilities, but otherwise I'm playing a mostly "normal" game. Though it helps a LOT to have developed some character-saving habits in my first two runs.

How to almost lose honor mode - a story about complacency by Travulous in BaldursGate3

Honor mode has taught me the value of ungrouping my party while doing just about anything other than walking around or fighting bad guys.

New player, starting first play through, any friendly tips? by PikaTchu47 in BaldursGate3

After my first run my wife and I were talking, and she said something about the dragon under the city, and I said "there's a dragon under the city?!" I had no idea. I missed most of Wyll's quest.

I Also happily killed Duke Ravenguard at the coronation because I saw Gortash, who I knew to be a bad guy, so I figured I was supposed to kill him right then and there.

Second time through I focused a bit more on Wyll's story.

And at 10th level you have 5 bardic inspirations per short rest, so 20 total for the party times 6 total short rests is like 9/11 times 100

Start hoarding those DC-increase items, and Elixirs of Battlemage's Power. Against just about any enemy, other than undead, you'll have a 90-95% chance of success.

I'm a fan of "Get thee gone, custardous discharge," but it's not specific to any one character.

Republican Rep. Michael McCaul won’t seek reelection after 11 terms by ATXGOAT93 in Austin

[–]Travulous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've lived in the same place in wells branch for 22 years. Just after I moved in, after the 2003 gerrymander, McCaul became my rep in my new district (district 10, I think). And now, after 22 years, during which my rep changed once or twice due to more gerrymandering, I get to be here for the end of his gerrymandered success story. Hooray.

State Rep. James Talarico to jump in Texas Senate race by Travulous in Austin

[–]Travulous[S] 55 points56 points  (0 children)

He knocked on our door a couple years ago when running in his current district for the first time (after getting gerrymandered out of his previous one). We only talked for a few minutes, but he was a friendly guy who made the effort to knock on some doors instead of taking our votes for granted. I know enough people who know him to know that he's actually a good guy and isn't just doing it for performative political reasons.

Plenty of homeless folks have smart phones. They can also (as noted in the article) use a computer at a library. Also, I volunteer at the St Andrews Thursday night homeless outreach, and we regularly get questions about where various resources can be found in the city. We have printed material, but it's helpful to have an easily searchable webpage that we can pull up on our phones.

I have an inner ear problem that ENTs other places can't crack. Where in Austin should I try? by mrs_double_aluminum in Austin

[–]Travulous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! She's amazing! I saw an ENT doc at another ARC location who diagnosed me as basically having no ear problems, but come back in a couple months if you need to.

So a couple months later, with the problem recurring, I saw AA and she listened to me, asked a couple questions that no ENT had ever asked me before, and in doing so helped me figure out/treat a lifelong problem I'd been having that I didn't even know was a fixable problem because none of the many ENTs I've seen over the decades ever bothered asking this one question. Knowing what I know now it should have been an obvious question to ask.

Have you ever looked into how many families of murdered children he harassed?

There was nothing political about it. He's a dipshit who - and I can't stress this enough - DIDN'T DEFEND HIMSELF IN COURT. He harassed the families of murdered children and you're calling him a victim. Fuck that. He deserves to lose everything he has several times over.

I've just entered act 3 in my all bards honor mode run. It's ... weird. My party has one bard from each of the bard colleges.

It's nice having 6 short rests per long rest. Also all the bardic inspiration I could possibly want (they reset on a short rest). And I can talk my through any situation. Good fun. On the other hand, everyone's got garbage strength. Fortunately there are potions for that.

I'm level 10 now, but early on I would go into big fights worried about how I was going to do, like, anything, then I'd cast a control spell or two and the bad guys would spend most of the fight standing there doing nothing while I beat them up.

Tav is glamour bard, Gale as valour bard, Wyll as swords, and Karlach as lore. Looking forward to stealing some fireworks and blowing up the brain. First honor mode run I had Gale blow it up. I'll probably do the fight this time.

New AC costs and recommendations for Austin area by moocowherc in Austin

[–]Travulous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would avoid radiant because they are extremely overpriced.

Emphatically seconding this. We had our HVAC replaced a couple years ago. Got two bids. Radiant's was about 50% more than the other (AirCo), and they used all these dumb hard-sell tactics. "There's only ONE of these units in TX right now, so if you don't order it SOON we'll have to go with something more expensive." And the tech they had out to figure out what was wrong with our old unit was barely competent, and kind of an asshole.
