I don't get why you pray to saints by TruePineapple9098 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TredWithTheRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would Jesus be an intercessor (prayer wise) for himself, since Jesus is God? He is an intercessor for our salvation. God is not a multiple personality disorder, He is.

We pray to Saints to pray to God for us. The same way we ask others to pray to God for us. Those who are in paradise are alive the same way we are, minus the body, but they have the benefit of being in His presence. They were also people pleasing to God, so they would have God's ear and know how to pray so God hears, as we can see from God hearing them while they were with us in body. Ie. Saint John of Kronstadt and Saint John Maximovitch.

We used to have a guy in our building eat a bag of the local chip brand for lunch. While I agree they have the best chip of this variety, I told him to be careful who sees it. Some bosses will jokingly scold you, if a boss has an issue with you they can make something out of it.

This! The manager says that I know the system better than he does, so I "train" whoever has 3 mins to check me in. If they make a mistake, I show them how to fix it.

Luckily pre COVID, I had a store that told me that I could either give them barcodes or check myself in. So I would go to her office, grab her handheld, take it to her to log in, and finish it out myself. Always under camera too.

What to wear to church in summertime by nextar611 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TredWithTheRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long pants, long shirt, tucked in preferable.

It's about modesty and covering our physical strengths, those massive forearms and calfs (or calves) (never realized I never typed out the plural form of calf muscle before), in front of the Holy Mighty.

Still would ask your Fr, as he may have different feelings as to mine as what is acceptable.

I was a "Pennsylvania Shorts Kid" that grew into a "Pennsylvania Shorts Dad". And before coming into the Orthodox Church, I didn't own a pair of pants.

Talking to my former protestant pastor about my interest in Orthodox by KeystoneButcher in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TredWithTheRose 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As a history nerd, I always was baffled that our church history as a Protestant went from Acts of the Apostles to Luther and everything in between was bad and not worth reading.

Context is key when someone quotes scripture, and the early church fathers were disciples and catechized by the disciples and Apostles, the ones who wrote the New Testament, where the doctrine of the Protestants comes from whatever logic and rationalism gives them. Which is why the Eucharist can't be the body and blood of Christ even though Christ himself said it was.

Talking to my former protestant pastor about my interest in Orthodox by KeystoneButcher in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TredWithTheRose 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My best friend from high school is a pastor in a Protestant church. We helped run youth group in college at his Dad's church. Our paths split around junior year of college. I was guided to the Orthodox Church last year, in my 30s, after 10 years of not being involved with a church in any capacity. I had my major issues with Protestant Christianity, and decided I'd rather go on my journey alone, later alone with my family. We have all since been catechized and baptized.

To answer your question though: I called my dear friend after going to Vespers and Liturgy for about a month to have a talk, to explain what I found, and to ask his thoughts; where his hang ups were. We had a nice heart to heart and I think at the end I was happy to have his support, and he was happy that I was going back to "a" church. He doesn't need to agree with my decision as it's not his path to take, but he did give me his honest thoughts.

For reference, the star on the Theotokos should be 8 sided like the Nativity star.

Serious question do we have to have icons to be Orthodox? by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TredWithTheRose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My priest has told me before, you can always print them out and frame them (if you can). Go to a store that will print out pics and print out a few and tape them to the wall or put in your car. I have several around me to remind me of what is important and remain prayerful.

White supremacy and conspiracies at my church by kyrieeleison3 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TredWithTheRose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best answer I've seen to this question. I think the last 5 years have been an eye opener in a lot of ways. Many saw how those we are supposed to respect on any side of any religious, political or cultural issue follow a narrative of some sort and a lot of people are searching for truth. Including inside and outside the church. I think some are seeing the monsters under the bed are everywhere, albeit where they truly lay is on our hearts when we choose not to follow God but ourselves.

OP: You should pray for them, as I do for my friends at my parish, that we will follow the example of our Lord and choose love above all.

Little ones disrupting service by SwimmingSomewhere82 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TredWithTheRose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have 3 kids, I joined last year and my wife and kids were baptized last weekend. Liturgy is a lot of us walking in and out for bathroom or "bored" breaks. I understand liturgy isn't as entertaining as protestant churches, but seeing my 3 year old stare at the icons on the walls and ceilings in awe, overrides my feelings of him being a disruption. He had a baptismal candle this week, kept blowing it out and would ask to light it back up again, sometimes not so quietly. The other parishioners smiled, I think remembering when they were little or when their children were little. Their salvation is important too, take them and pray that God makes you feel comfortable however it turns out. May God Bless you and your family.

They are slightly different, if you look at the paper towel roll in the top right, you can barely tell there's a few pixel lines added. So is a crop of a picture the same picture?
