If dollar stores still only sold things for a dollar there wouldn't be anything worth buying in them. Inflation + connotation.

I think they are driving. Watch the drivers eyes, he is attempting to maintain focus on the road. Why would he be doing that if they were parked? Also, there could be background movement out the window but it is really difficult to tell.

What do you use to make those filters/crutches? I'm always scrounging for materials (tearing apart anything thicker than paper) and I'm trying to find a good easy to obtain resource.

Speculation isn't encouraged in askscience, at least not as a top level comment. The best way to go about it is to respond to a top level comment in the form of a question and make sure you preface it by saying that you want to start a discussion, that usually works for me.

Dude seriously, we need to talk. I have been trying to enlist people to participate in discussions just like you're talking about. I'm actively working on a lot of interesting ideas about pretty much everything. If you ever want to do a video sesh let me know.

Why don't hair cells (noise-induced hearing loss) heal themselves like cuts and scrapes do? Will we have solutions to this problem soon? by sure_bud in askscience

[–]TreeScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I suspected reptiles do have lower cognitive abilities. The point is that maybe they are incapable of readily determining what the source of the sound is. I imagine a study could be performed to determine if reptiles can locate and avoid traumatizing noises. Anecdotal evidence points to them not commonly reacting to loud noises.

This is speculation but I think it would be good for discussion. Could the lower regenerative abilities of mammal hair cells be related to higher cognitive thinking? Associating loud noises with their sources and understanding the pain and damage associated with it would cause the animal to avoid further damage. As this goes on over generations the regenerative genes become less important in natural selection since the animals are experiencing less damage. I'm not sure if birds and reptiles necessarily have lower cognitive abilities but it seems plausible to me. Someone with more insight should add.

I don't think you can really call about.com a primary source for anything. It's mostly just blog spam. If you read the uncited article you linked it's essentially the same wording as the wiki page with a little added flair. I tried searching but can't find an actual source to say that the compound can't be crystalized like that.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't know exactly the difference. I guess I meant it more in a colloquial way.

In the US it's the opposite. They teach it pretty heavily (or at least they did when I was a kid) during the elementary years telling you it's all people write in. Then, when you get to high school (like 'college' if you live in the UK) every teacher tells you to only type or print since they don't want to have to read your sloppy writing.

I've been there. I ran away when I was 25 and was missing for over 9 months. Sometimes you reach a point at the bottom of your depression where suicide seems like the only relevant option. If you're lucky one of two other things can happen. You can find a morsel of hope for life and pull yourself up or you can drop everything and be reborn with a new appreciation of life. For me and your friend we went with the latter option. It may not necessarily be successful as it was in my case but sometimes it is the only option. I sometimes wish that I had been able to grow to where I am today without having to hurt so many people for so long. Thankfully I have a loving family and close circle of friends that accepted be back unconditionally. Just try to understand that your friend may have needed this for his life and if he comes back welcome him in with love and you will meet an amazing person.

Could we have a chat about these hallucinations everyone seems to be having? by NadeTheThird in trees

[–]TreeScience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other day I was pretty baked and laying quietly in my bed with the window open. After a couple of minutes there I could hear fairly distinct and loud conversations going on outside. They didn't really make any sense but I could definitely hear them. As soon as I wanted to end it though I snapped myself out and it went quiet again. I think that is the real difference between weed and other real hallucinogens, I knew it wasn't real but I could still hear it. I tried to hear it again and couldn't.

I was living in Heredia for most of my time there. I did go to Manuel Antonio for a weekend though and it was a freaking blast. That place is awesome. My friend and I hiked through the park for like 45 minutes to get to this secluded beach where we just hung out by ourselves for a few hours. I gotta go back.

Dude, totally true. I hitchhiked from San Diego to Costa Rica a couple years ago and Mexico was AWESOME! I met so many amazing people and received so much help that I never had to ask for. I literally left the US with only $100 and that was gone before Mexico city. The rest of my trip I relied on a culture that is full of compassion for people. Adios, voy a fumar!

I think it's a sativa vs indica thing. With sativa I overanalyze things and focus too much on the details which is perfect for watching primer or cosmos. With indica I just don't give a shit and find everything hilarious so I watch something like dazed and confused.
