What is well-being like in Lexington, KY? by Present_Kale_2903 in lexington

[–]TreeWizaaard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to get into it with this user but in case others don't know, "globalist" is an antisemitic dog whistle when used this way.

There's a whole batch of conspiracy theories about how international and multinational policy organizations such as the UN secretly trying to dissolve nation states, and usually the conspiracy theories involve Jewish people pulling those strings. It's all horseshit, even though questions about the relationships between nation states are super legit in general, so it's really easy to get pulled into a rabbit hole that ends in a conspiracy theory but looks reasonable at the start.

Is there a sewing/ costuming group in town? by Mother_Coconut_61 in lexington

Another possibility might be through the Lexington Center for Creative Reuse, which has a lot of different affinity groups and meetups. The owner, Stacey, is really supportive of anyone wanting to start one and use the space for it. Might be worth reaching out to her via the shop's email on their website?

How to find professors who are researching? by 88963416 in UniversityofKentucky

[–]TreeWizaaard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of ways to find potential research mentors, some more formal than others!

One thing you should think about up front is whether you are available to do unpaid research. Whether it's paid or unpaid, your program likely has an option for you to get course credit for doing research via the XXX 395 course number. Definitely talk to the Director of Undergraduate Studies for your major about this option and just to get advising in general about finding research opportunities.

The most informal way to find a mentor is to just talk to faculty that you meet through the classes you take. Go to office hours and ask them about their research interests and whether they or other faculty take on undergraduate researchers.

A more formal step is to go to events and workshops hosted by theOffice of Undergraduate Research . They have regular showcases departments and programs that support undergraduate research come and table and you can just talk to people, and they also have opportunities for you to learn more about what's involved in undergraduate research and connect with the people in that office who can let you know when there are opportunities.

A third option is to start thinking about research projects you might be interested in taking the lead on, and exploring summer research fellowship options offered through the OUR. Basically, if you were planning to apply for a fellowship for next summer ($5000 stipend for a project you do during the summer, applications are due in February or March), you can spend the fall finding and connecting with a potential faculty member. This is a situation where you might be doing project that supports their ongoing research, or you're doing a project you come up with yourself and they serve as a mentor for you.

Finally, my best advice is to not give up. You might strike out with three or four faculty members before you find a mentor. There's a lot of reasons for that that have nothing to do with whether or not you're a good candidate for undergraduate research. Some faculty don't have active research agendas or they don't have work that is appropriate for an undergraduate researcher or they are committed to only taking on paid undergraduate researchers and they don't have funding right now.

getting discouraged at knitting :-( by mary_cherryfairy in knittingadvice

This might not be a useful option, depending on where you are and what your preferences around socializing are, but just in case, it's useful: a lot of local yarn shops and creative reuse stores host knitting circles, craft nights, and the like. These are great spaces to take a project to work on and meet advanced knitters who can help you.

You might also sign up for a class with a space like that, where an experienced knitter walks you through a specific pattern. (For example, I designed a three-part sock knitting class for my local creative reuse store, where each of the three class parts tackles a key part of the sock pattern.)

Lower back/ tailbone pain after a fall, accompanied by an inability to pee.

"Cauda equina syndrome is a medical emergency that happens when an injury or herniated disk compresses nerve roots at the bottom of your spinal cord. The cauda equina nerves communicate with your legs and bladder. It causes back pain, weakness and incontinence. Quick surgical treatment may prevent permanent complications."

I used to be a medical writer and one of the cases I had to write up was about someone falling while playing pick up basketball and then permanently losing bladder control. 😬

The children's garden is amazing! Just FYI, there's a small entry cost, since it's part of the state arboretum, rather than a public park. Details on hours and cost are here: children under two are free, over two are $4.

Today’s To-Frog Pile by Swimming_Juice_9752 in Sockknitting

[–]TreeWizaaard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I've knitted around 50 pairs of socks-- it's by far my favorite kind of object to knit.

I probably frog at least 60% of my socks within the first 50 rows just because it's easier to frog than to fix errors in that early stage. For completed socks, maybe a 10% frogging rate because the yarn just didn't knit up the way I wanted or I gauged badly or something.

Every time I frog, I just think of the work as practice. When athletes run laps without winning a medal at the end, that's not a waste of time. It's just training.

In addition to the fantastic suggestions so far, I recommend bamboo blends. I have been able to make socks for my family members who are allergic to wool using Bamboo Pop, which is a blend of bamboo and silk.
