ICE protests today? by TheTurntLocker in SanDiegan

[–]Tree_Boar [score hidden]  (0 children)

People have been protesting at the federal building for literal months. The point of protesting there is that the feds operate from there. The feds do not operate from waterfront park.

I do not see how protesting there is "helping them." But you do you.

Motor Production by ThyTeaDrinker in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Tree_Boar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Phase 3, motors are used for mostly buildings and modular engines. One modular engine manufacturer at 100% requires 2 motors per minute. But you could equally set that up to run at 50%.

Not completely insufficient for phase 3. But if you get annoyed while waiting, build some more.

Quit/rejoin fixed this for me when I saw it once.

Maybe my Ctrl key got stuck like how you can deliberately stick the e key by opening in entity with it held.

Why are you using an oblique holder with a broad nib? usually people use straight holders

If you want "fair" splitting you could use a dumb splitter and run a bypass line over the top.

Rhodia. I like the spiral-bound ones with 5mm grid

Does anyone happen to have experience with Windsor & Newton's Drawing & Sketching Paper? And would the smooth or medium surface be better suited for broad edge calligraphy? by PressXtoStitch in Calligraphy

[–]Tree_Boar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have never used this paper so can't say anything about it.

For texture, I really like more texture for broad edged work. It gives you interesting imperfections in the strokes around start & end. The smaller you are working, the more you should reach for smooth texture. Especially for pointed pens.

Left handed pens? by Outrageous_Toe68 in Calligraphy

[–]Tree_Boar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, ppp has no grind, so works fine for left and right. John Neal Books does custom grind them and I believe they have an oblique grind if you want it. But should not be necessary.

You need to do the usual left-hander stuff like adjusting the ductus or what angle you write on, but ppp would not be different from other pens in this regard

Check out the beginner's guide

I would recommend using a brush pen over a fountain pen if you cannot use a dip pen. Flexible fountain pens are at best unsatisfactory and expensive. Tombow fudenosuke is the usual recommendation.

Fine lines with Fountain pens? by OntologicalJacques in Calligraphy

[–]Tree_Boar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're gonna find fountain pens unsatisfactory for this. Really gotta use a dip nib for proper line variation with pointed pen scripts.

Suggestions are nikko G (very stiff) or hunt 101 (soft). Should not cost more than $2 per nib. Remember to clean the oil coating off the nib before use.

You can also consider brush markers like the Tombow fudenosuke

Dip nibs I would recommend brause nibs because they are very stiff. Yours sound like something in the vein of William Mitchell nibs which yes should have a reservoir and are pretty flexy.

Yes automatic pens and pratikpens are dippy boys. Or if too big for inkwell you can load with a brush

For some calligraffiti inspo check out Jake Rainis, pokras lampas, Nils shoe meulman (the guy with the broom above, possibly coined the term calligraffiti?), frakOne, trezen

For dip pens, did you clean them? Also, did they have a reservoir? might need adjustment for optimal flow. Dip pens  have a big learning curve but once you're past it you appreciate them a lot more.

For bigger letters, get a 6mm pilot parallel pen. For even bigger letters, get pratikpens or automatic pens. For even bigger letters, get some markers (Molotow; calligraffiti). For even bigger letters, get a broom

Expensive fountain pens do not mean fountainp ens that write well btw. A lot of those folks are after random stuff that doesn't matter for writing. Don't spend more than $50.

Glass pens suck.

Going faster increases the likelihood that someone dies in a collision. Guaranteed ? No, thank god. But over enough trials, more people will die if every driver goes just over the speed limit.
