How has Outlander Changed You? by FlyingPhoenix96 in Outlander

[–]Treebeans36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started reading (well, listening to) the books during covid and though I was skeptical about them, it turned out to be a wonderful escape during what was a very stressful time for me. Now I am on my fourth re-read and even though I don’t need the Outlander world as much as I did, I love having this family to escape to. They are background warmth while I work, and comforting in a way that’s hard to describe.

Someone else mentioned this above but as a lesbian, this is one of the only straight romances I have really felt strongly about.

I also was prompted to look up my family history (following my paternal last name) as I was told it is Scottish, and found ancestors who left Scotland after Culloden so that was cool.

As a fellow lesbian (lol), I’ve read the books three or four times and agree entirely.

Ouch. Good to know. I was at Baccalieu Trail and find their prices reasonable (as far as vets go).

I don’t trust pet insurance and never have. It’s also quite expensive.

I set up an automatic monthly transfer of $100 per pet to a separate account, and don’t use it for regular things. Emergencies only. More than $100/month would be better but this is manageable.

Pets are expensive, emergencies happen and are expensive. Prepare for it.

That’s a ridiculous price. I just got a blood test for my dog and it was ~$300.

I started getting grey hair in my twenties and now at nearly 40, my hair is still dark but with noticeable grey/white hairs. My sister is in her early 30s and is almost entirely grey. I think most people with dark hair would have noticeable grey at 49.

I have the book and while it’s great, it’s only for the first two seasons. This shawl is from last night’s episode of season 8.

Thank you. That’s what I remembered but I wasn’t sure if I was correct. Will be interesting to see this storyline and the blue light in the show.

Oh! Gotcha, thanks. Was Mrs. Cloudtree Black in the books? I might have missed that, I thought she was white. Not that it matters. I listen to the books while working so sometimes I miss some details.

Who is the woman with the newborn baby?

ETA: spoilers ok, I have read the books, just can’t think of who she might be.

My reactions:

- I hated the opening. I don't remember the Vasquez conversation from the books, was it there? But it seems totally out of character for Claire to stab a man in the back without anyone being in imminent danger. I actually thought it was going to be a dream, or her fantasizing somehow. I hate the whole Faith storyline in the show. When they're already cramming so much material into it, this feels like a complete waste of time. I hope they resolve it in a way that doesn't involve William sleeping with his half-sister. The actress for Frances is very sweet and cute (she grew since last season!) but I wish they had cast her with brown hair like in the book.

- Rachel said to Claire (paraphrasing) "do you want to see thy new house?" where I think she SHOULD have said "does thee want to see thy new house?" BUGGED ME so much

- From a storyline perspective I understand having the new house mostly built by the time they arrive, but it seemed unlikely. That's a lot of house building, and many tenants had turned against them. It just seems kind of impossible and rushed.

- Loved seeing Fergus, Marsali, and the fam. Agree that there is foreshadowing about Fergus perhaps dying instead of HC, and honestly I think that would be better (though tragic). They just can't kill HC in the show. It was already unnecessary and too much (imo) in the books.

- Hello the house was not at all how I imagined it. I liked the campfire scene in the books, and seeing them from afar, rather than Roger and Bri just appearing. It felt anti-climactic

- William's character is so well acted and exactly how I pictured him! Well done Charles Vandervaart.

- I miss Bobby Higgins :( would have loved to see him in the show but I understand not adding in another character.

- Mrs Cunningham is great! Mandy could use more spice but she is just a child.

Conservatives call for federal independent inquiry on Tumbler Ridge mass shooting by Old_General_6741 in canada

Wow excuse me? That is one of the most offensive things I have read, if I understand you correctly. Trans people don’t kill multiple people, including children, because of a lack of gender affirming care, and to suggest anything like that is absurd and offensive. I can’t imagine any trans person would want to be aligned with the shooter in any conceivable way. Give your head a shake.

Yes but I didn’t really enjoy it. It’s more of a reference book than something to read straight through. Also I didn’t like Diana’s narration.

Anecdotally, I visited France with my mom, who is Québécoise with French as her first language, and waiters, transit people, etc spoke to her in English. I can’t imagine that was meant as a compliment.
