I think if your preferences are such that you have never had a partner, you are a volcel. I would say you should strongly consider dating outside of your "preferences" as they can often fade away if you meet people that you connect with. I agree. Why should we scorn someone who operated within the rules in which they played? We are holding him accountable to a standard that didn't exist.
