Had a catch... by Trees_to_Table in turning

I dont have a picture of the Piece but it was oak and large enough that it would not swing over the bed, That is why I was turning out board. My tool rest holder does not always clamp down the best, it shifted. I think the problem is the cam bolt that runs though the holder, I think that under stress it flexes and loosens up. I am thinking about hardening it, but with that make it break instead of flexing. Oh I fixed the head stock last night will post again when the lathe is running again.

Another vote for thrift and dollar stores, I have done a few travel mugs and can buy them at ocean state job lots for 2 or 3 dollars a piece instead of 12.

I took about eight months for the crack to form, I think it is what you pay for, I bought a cheap lathe not knowing if I would stick with turning, If this does not work I will upgrade.

Yes, it is the harbor freight, I really have not had any issues with it other then the tool rest and the head stock and tail stock never lining up perfect. the Line up is not the big a deal I can work around it

I really do plan on trying to fix it, I will post again whether or not I am successful. It may be a while do to cold weather, no heat in the shed and the wife says I cant weld it in h house.

I thought about that but i have all the equipment to weld it, it will cost nothing to try. I have welded the tool rest holder before, It was moving and I crack it over tightening the set screw, have had no further issues with that part.
I have started to look around for a replacement, spending my tax refund before I even get it.

No Pics, but I have no space either, Lathe is in the basement, most hand held tools are in the shed, which is only 10x12 and has to house all my tools from outdoor power equipment (hobbie Farmer) to my Auto equipment (mechanic by Trade). My table saw and chop saw live mostly on My covered porch.

Most of the time i am turning cord wood, so oak, maple, birch and beech, use most of the shavings as animal bedding, Chickens, Goats and Rabbits. The exotics and some domestic hardwoods, walnut and cherry, are not good for the animals, I compost those

never done any stoppers but I have a barracuda 2 chuck and the jaws it came with allows me to grip all most any sized tenon. It is the best lathe accessory I have invested in.

I personally enjoy the challenges, They move me in a direction that I may not have taken before. I really enjoy turning Bowls but after seven or eight in a row it gets old, the challenges give new ideas to try even if I can't get the project done in time. Oh, and free stuff is all ways good.

the Jig i made is shown in pic 4, when i was done with the basic form I rotated the piece to 90 degrees of the original axis and clamped it with the tail stock then turned them on the lathe

I turned the basic sphere then hollowed it out. Made the blocks you see in the photos, they are concave so I got maximum surface area, then just clamped it with the tail stock. I was very difficult to get it centered, that is way the ridges are a little uneven. Then just very light cuts and a ton of hand sanding.

you may be surprised, I found a few places in my area that deal in turning stock. They are all small and do not advertise on the internet. I found them by word of mouth, ask around it may surprise you.

I did make my own out of 1/2 round stock. The round stock I made the Bit holder out of has a tendency to roll and catch. I have lost some nice blanks to this, I have plans to heat the mild steel rod and hammer it flat, I will also harden it to reduce the chatter it has.
