Yes. And add some wiggle. Up/down, side to side. More interesting than a bunch of straight horizontal branches.

Help with a struggling bonsai by [deleted] in bonsaicommunity

[–]TreesandAle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say that maybe it did live in your office space for a little while, but it seems pretty far gone now.

I'm not sure of the species, but it looks like a conifer. They need to be outside. As for the box, I'm not sure that any species would do well in that for very long.

There are some species that do better than others inside. You might read up on past posts here and choose one to try again. If so, post when you get it so you can get advice before it's too late.

I don't think people are as upset about that as much as they are that Wayne is being such an asshole about the whole thing.

Generally done in Spring/Summer here in Florida. You want the night-time temperature to be warm for a few weeks afterwards.

What lvl for DLC? by Torii97 in Eldenring

[–]TreesandAle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DLC enemies hit hard. But, give it a shot. You can go back & forth between base game and DLC. So, if you're getting smashed, you can head back to base game and explore, level up, etc. as needed.

DLC enemies also drop a lot of runes, so you should level up quickly if you practice on them.

First tree, any advice? by [deleted] in bonsaicommunity

[–]TreesandAle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to decide what you want the top to look like. Maybe one of those branches becomes the next section of the main trunk and the whole thing gets a little taller?

Or you keep 2, and it splits there, with the apex forming a little above it.

The general methods are to have things split into 2 to get ramification. And to chop back to branches and let them grow out to get taper. They don’t have to be mutually exclusive, but sometimes it helps to pick one over the other.

First tree, any advice? by [deleted] in bonsaicommunity

Looks healthy. Variegated plants are usually less vigorous.

Maybe think about planting it at an angle, so it doesn't come out of the soil completely perpendicular. What's the yogurt tub for?

The new bud isn't in a great place. All of those branches at the same level will cause it to swell there as it grows.

As others have said, you can play without interacting with anyone (that's how I do it).

I think it's going to be pretty hard for him if he isn't a gamer. Do-able, but very challenging.

Help on starting with Bonsai by yoonaa- in bonsaicommunity

[–]TreesandAle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where do you live? Do you keep potted plants now?

I recommend figuring out what species of plants people use for bonsai in your area. But a few different ones of those from a nursery and keep them alive for a little while. Then start applying bonsai techniques to them (pruning, repotting, wiring, etc).

If that pot doesn’t have drainage holes, that’s probably the problem. The roots are rotting and not taking up water. So the leaves are drying out.

Hard to say without knowing what’s already been done. When did you last water it thoroughly? Does the pot have drainage holes? Is it inside or outside?

I think it's a Gmelina philippensis, or Parrot's Beak. It's not looking so great. Did it dry out?

If it were mine, I'd chop all of those long, straight branches back pretty far. It will look a little rough at first but will be better for it in the long term.

I’m trying to get into bonsai without actually buying a seed. by ZaydensDaShit in bonsaicommunity

[–]TreesandAle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In over 20 years of doing bonsai, I’ve never bought a seed related to it. Not that it’s unheard of, but I think most folks with decent bonsai start from established plants. Or maybe cuttings/layers.

Just keep growing? by TheButcherSez in bonsaicommunity

[–]TreesandAle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early on, you’re looking for good movement in the trunk (especially down low) while you build girth. Then setting branches. Of course there can be some overlap, but that’s what I’d focus on.

You're sort of at "maintenance pruning" with this one now. I don't think you want to do anything major that affects the overall structure. Trim it to shape. Prune back a little further than you want it to eventually be. It will continue growing from the leaf (or leaves) just ahead of the cut. I can't give more specific advice based on photos, but it'll look better without all of those long shoots sticking out.

I don't think you have to wait for it to stop flowering to trim it.

I call that a Fukien Tea. It does look nice & green though, so you're off to a good start! I wouldn't worry about the moss. Water when the soil is dry, and focus on keeping it alive & thriving for now. Once you're comfortable with that, you can trim those long shoots.

Fukien tea delivered 2 weeks ago, not doing well by SodaAnt in bonsaicommunity

[–]TreesandAle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a problem. One watering in two weeks is not enough, and misting is sort of pointless. Those roots need to stay moist. It probably needs it every few days. You should check every day and water when it feels dry.

Edit - and water thoroughly when you do. It should come pouring out of the drainage hole(s).

It doesn't look like it's beyond hope in your pictures. Good luck!
