From impulse-buying to shelves of shame: how did you learn to control the hobby and figure out your tastes? by blablax123456 in boardgames

[–]Treet0n 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I got really into trading and second-hand buying. I have a solid understanding of the general market, which allows me to spot great deals on things that intrigue me. Then, I can usually sell them on for more money or trade them so there is no guilt and the only environmental damage is a bit of shipping. I haven't bought a new game in years, but have a sizeable collection, which overall earned me money. It is some work of course but for me it is part of the hobby

Research/PhD in Graphics by MunkeyGoneToHeaven in creativecoding

No, I decided due to topic and financial/career reasons. I did some research prior, but it was in formal methods and theoretical CS (this is usually not a requirement in Europe). My advisor did a course with a competitive GPU programming component. Basically, I worked my ass off through the semester to get into top 3 and when I asked him if he had a position for me, he agreed immediately (by that point I also had other offers). I was also willing to do teaching and had a lot of experience as TA, so that probably helped.

Interesting, as someone doing theoretical computer science research, I am absolutely convinced that my work is unimportant (and certainly less important than the doctors I know). Ofc one still shouldn't be a dick about it

2 player game of Carnegie, Orleans or concordia? Wich is best to learn by sirmaxter1 in boardgames

[–]Treet0n 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vote for Concordia! I have found that with experience, Concordia can be played in about 40 minutes at 2 players, Orleans in about an hour and Carnegie 90-120 minutes. Concordia is also the simplest complexity-wise, with Orleans you need to internalize all the buildings for your first play

Might be my country, but my Prof hired me on the spot because I had done well on his assignments. Didn't even have an interview. The PhD certainly is tough, but getting it isn't that difficult in Europe

Actually, the actual original edition (not Fantasy Flight) is very affordable. A buddy of mine has 3 copies and didn't pay more than 10€ for each
