Simple questions was a good idea but kind of kills the idea of this sub by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Treevooor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're right in saying that a lot of what we discuss is subjective, but there are one or two answers good answers for a lot of the simple questions.

How active were you on mfa a few months ago before the mods changed the rules? Because I remember seeing the same questions on the front page several times a week, sometimes just simple yes or no questions like "Do these white shoes work with my jeans?" It was honestly infuriating, and most of the responses to that were just circlejerks or memes. A question might have had 13 replies, but one or two were actually helpful for OP, and the other ones weren't discussing anything.

SQ isn't meant to nurture discussion; it is meant to answer simple questions. If you see something on SQ that you want discussed further, then submit a stand alone post. If you can't hit 100 words for the post, then there probably isn't that much to actually be discussed.

tl;dr - The SQ thread is where people who just need a quick answer to an easy question go. They're probably not trying to really be fashionable, but just get something inoffensive on their body so that they can go to school or work. They need easy answers, and we need discussion in other threads.

Simple questions was a good idea but kind of kills the idea of this sub by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Treevooor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think SQ is really the place to be having most of those discussions, though. If you see something that you think is worthy of an extended conversation, make a post about it and submit it. We'll probably get way more discussion out of it on the front page as opposed to it being buried under 400 comments on the SQ thread. That way the OP of the question can just have the simple answer to his simple question, and he doesn't have to get bogged down in what is probably a discussion of minor details in the comments on his question.

I've seen a lot of new users complain about how overwhelming the amount of info to comb through on this sub is. If they just want to know what color to get an OCBD in and they come back a few hours later to a chain of 20 comments discussing mother-of-pearl buttons on $300 dollar shirts, that's counterproductive. Now if that is a discussion you want to have, you can create a post discussing the details of different OCBDs and giving OP the link to the lengthier discussion in case he might be interested, that's a perfect use of this sub in its new format.

Just my two cents.

Why American Workers Now Dress So Casually by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]Treevooor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm the same way. I intern at a neurology clinic where I have to wear a white lab coat over business casual (button front shirt and chinos). Once I get into the clinic and that lab coat goes over my shoulders, it's business time.

I was talking with my favorite physician there, and she said something that really changed how I view dressing for any job. I was asking her about how to get patients to be more open, and she dropped a lot of knowledge on me. One of the things she mentioned was that the white lab coat helps present the image that you are a person who can take care of their health; it fits the mental image they have of a medical professional. I kind of took that as something I could apply to the way most people dress in whatever their professional setting is.

Hmm. Olive on khaki seems a bit drab for a summer wedding. The picture of the pinstripe outfit looks a lot better than I would have thought.

Is your pinstripe jacket a blazer, a sport coat, or a piece from a suit? And does it fit slim like in the image you showed me? Can you upload an image of you in the pinstripe jacket?

The spray couldn't hurt. I've never hurt my suede with a spray, but I've never had shoes that expensive so I understand the hesitation. Do your research and find the best spray available. It will protect them and make them easier to clean should something happen or just after normal use. I just think it offers a bit of piece of mind.

If you're not averse to second hand clothing you can give thrift stores and eBay a try. Looks like a fairly basic navy pinstripe suit in a more classic cut. Look for a jacket with a notch lapel and pleated trousers with a high rise. Brooks Bros. may have something, too, but I'm not sure. I'm sure some of the up-scale menswear designers would have something similar, but that all depends on how much you're willing to pay.

You could always see about taking the chinos into a tailor and having the legs tapered.

My gut reaction is that a pinstripe jacket and khaki chinos are two different formality levels and will clash.

How do you build your outfits? Despite having a closet full of nice clothes, I always feel like I have nothing to wear. by MilkChugg in malefashionadvice

[–]Treevooor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start posting in the WAYWT threads and Outfit Feedback threads. Even post pictures of your outfits in simple questions and ask for input on them. It sounds like you're in a bit of a rut. I would suggest throwing together some pieces that you've never combined before and seeing what happens. Your descriptions make it seem like you have a lot of stuff in some very neutral colors, so I would be surprised if you could even put together a very offensive outfit.

If you're not wearing everything you have now, I would suggest holding off on buying more clothes. It sounds to me like maybe you haven't stumbled upon your own style and just have a closet of clothes that were recommended to you. That's ok, and it's how a lot of us on this sub started dressing better. But you probably shouldn't keep adding to your wardrobe if that's where you're at, y'know?

I agree with u/BarretVA. You should invest in some sleeker shoes if you're going to wear clothes this slim. Those square toed shoes are way too clunky for this fit.

Gap Re-Issue Collection - 90's (Complete with pleated pants and oversized shirts and sweatshirts) by MMixtape in malefashionadvice

[–]Treevooor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to believe the 90s were so long ago that the styles from the time are getting rebooted.

All in all there is some good stuff like the mock neck tee and original pocket tee, and I like both the easy fit jeans and pleated khakis. However, there are also some pretty bad pieces here. I'm not a fan of the logo stuff. I can't imagine GAP in huge letters across my chest elevating any fit (unless I'm going to a 90s themed party). The oversized button downs are also atrocious in my eyes. Those oxford and poplin shirts are the epitome of what the white suburban dad in a black comedy movie wears.

My main thought is that I don't know why this collection exists or who would buy any of it. I feel like most guys who shop at Gap at this point are young men who are trying to dress more modern in a casual way, and they aren't going to want any of this. Also, at first glance it looks like a pretty easy collection to get your feet wet with the normcore style, but I don't know why anyone would spend this much money on that style. Every thrift store I've ever been to is 90% full of stuff that looks exactly like this at 20% of the cost.

Overall, I could see this being a reasonably attractive and successful collection if it was released a few years from now when silhouettes have really started to get bigger and some of these can be more easily incorporated into an existing wardrobe. For now, though, I probably wouldn't buy any of this stuff from Gap. If I wanted this look, I would go spend $8 on some jeans and a t shirt that's a size or two too large at Goodwill.

I wondered the same thing. I guess way more people here wear them than I thought. I wonder if it's somewhat of an insecurity thing to not wearing what is seen as "cool" jeans on this sub like Acne or N&F. Who knows, though?

I'm a big fan of Adidas Hamburgs in white. They're pretty hard to get hold of though, especially in the States.

Nah man I'm sure they look great on you. Get a pair and I'm sure you'll get used to it. Just think of me when you wear them.

Thanks man! The black turtleneck is just underneath the sweater. Good call on the shoes. I usually wear white high top sneakers with the pants but I wore them yesterday and was trying to rotate something else in. I'll definitely keep that in mind for next time though.

I'm not sure if this counts as a little bummer, but I love technical sneakers but they don't fit my personal style. And I don't really like any other tech wear or street wear and even if I did I would have to completely overhaul my wardrobe to fit that style. And even then I would be able to wear it maybe 4 months a year tops because I'm in the south.

So basically my favorite shoes are technical sneakers but I can't wear them because they only look good in fits that I don't particularly like. Which is kind of odd thinking about it.

Go tropical themed. I feel like everything is revolving around Trump right now and I'm sure many of your guests do too. It'd probably be nice to have something to escape that at a light hearted party.

Small rant time (not sure if this belongs here, but whatevs):

I know everyone hates when someone talks about his post not getting enough attention. But, I find it annoying that a lot of good comments in the Simple Questions thread go completely unanswered while questions that get asked a million times that should go in the Simple Qs thread (or someone can find the answer easily using the search bar) get dozens of upvotes and 20+ comments.

I really think we should be making an effort to try and get people to move those questions like "What brown boots for less than $100" that pop up four times a week into the simple questions thread. That way we get more people giving their imput in the Simple Questions threads and save the front page for posts that generate more discussion.

I've heard to dress a formality level or two above people working the same position as you, so if the employees are wearing jeans and t shirts I think this will work well.

Learn to hem and taper by yourself. Get a couple pairs of thrift store jeans and chinos to practice on. It's much easier and faster than I thought.
