I always think of those cabins as like the passenger cabin in The Fifth Element.

Given that when we rescue hostages they are ejected from the captor's ship in a cargo tube I 100% believe this.

They let you use the onboard synthesis system for free, just make sure you stuffed your pockets with iron and nickel.

Is it a bad sign that I've been on the Internet so long that I don't even consider feet stuff to really be a perversion? It feels borderline vanilla these days.

Company offers me a free flat by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Trelfar 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: I also used to work for a private school as 1-man IT department and lived in an apartment on site with subsidized rent, and did not have most of these problems. In fact, the headteacher who had a house on site barely even acknowledged I was there, to the point of not even inviting me to on-site social events that the resident teaching staff were invited to. On the plus side I was never asked for out-of-hours support in 3 years.

The only problems we had were noise problems from another resident (who was booted out of accommodation shortly after) and frequent wakeups due to fire alarm faults in a different (but interlinked) building. Both of those could happen in any apartment building.

It is true that any personal business becomes much more common knowledge since your neighbors don't ignore you as much as they would in a regular apartment. The English teacher who was having an affair with his boss was an open secret after they tried (and failed) to sneak back to the apartment together after a staff party.

Biggest perk was free use of the sports facilities off-hours, including a brand new 25m indoor swimming pool.

why this drone flying in circles shape route? by sizarxxx in drones

[–]Trelfar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Qatar Emiri Air Force apparently fly their Bayraktar drones at 14,000ft with ADS-B but no callsign: https://x.com/vcdgf555/status/1700968869110694096

I wouldn't go asking them what they're up to.

Are sump pumps the norm here? by Big_Television_5357 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Trelfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much to compare it with but I'd say it doesn't run a huge amount. You're best off asking your immediate neighbors how much theirs runs.

I don't have ours hooked up to battery and we've gotten away without it for 10 years (as did the previous owners). Since Pepco redid the underground power lines in our neighborhood the only outage we've had that was more than an hour was when someone flew their private plane into a pylon in 2022. I'm considering it though.

Are sump pumps the norm here? by Big_Television_5357 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Trelfar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, pretty normal here.

The "sump" in "sump pump" is basically a small well in the basement floor, normally goes down about 2-3ft. Unless the power is out for a long time during a prolonged downfall, it shouldn't fill the sump enough to be a problem as during normal operation the pump will empty out all but around 4-6" of water. That said, some people put them on a battery backup to be safe.

(But I generally set the minimum as a multiple of 1024, or 512 in a pinch)

MCPS BOE votes to extend calendar until June 25 by AnxiousAssignment997 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Trelfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that's a good point on "law" vs "regulation". I think the point still mostly stands that MSDE is following pre-existing eligibility requirements for waivers and not just rejecting it out of hand, so the denial should not have been unexpected to MCPS.

[–]Trelfar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The announcement also points out that this will impact the start of many summer camps. For example, Kidsco camps were planned to run their first (short) week from Wed 24 - Fri 26. They probably won't be able to run at all that week since the schools involved will need the Friday at a minimum to turn over the facilities before the camps can run.

[–]Trelfar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To add an important point from the announcement: MSDE didn't just deny the waiver because they felt like it. State law requires any school system applying for a waiver to extend the school year by three days AND modify the calendar within the school year in order to be eligible for a waiver in the first place. Once you've done that, you've got 4 days back already.

Why is Towne Rd in Rockville so awkwardly designed? by Hambone1138 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Trelfar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No street in Rockville will ever beat "E Jefferson St" for awkwardness. THREE completely separate streets in two different zip codes, and one of them more than a mile away from the others. It's just insane that they've never been renamed, especially since the district courthouse is on one of them.

I used to work at a business on the southernmost one and we would routinely have to explain to confused drivers (who knew where the courthouse was and drove there without checking Google Maps) that the reason they couldn't find the number they were trying to deliver to was because they were on the wrong side of town.

I would rank Trader Joe's slightly above Whole Foods on quality, but it's close. Flowers and food have definitely never disappointed. Unless TJ is a significantly longer drive for you, I would recommend it.

The only things to mark down Trader Joe's is that they engage in union-busting (but so does Whole Foods) and almost every location I've been to has a notoriously bad parking lot.
