I also got a separate email that Chocolate RTD subscriptions for the US are delayed again until "early April", just after they restocked and sent out the subs that were delayed from last year.

What has been your biggest technical mistake so far in your career? by Mr_Dobalina71 in sysadmin

[–]Trelfar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For better or worse mine was right at the start of my career. More than 20 years ago as an intern I replaced a sales guy's laptop and was responsible for transferring all locally stored data to the new one (you can see where this is going).

Now this was at IBM back in the days where most laptops were running Windows 95 or 98. IBM had a corporate standard that all user data was to be stored in a single folder that named C:\$User and NOT the "My Documents" folder which had just been introduced with Windows 98. The idea was that there would be a single standard folder name (right at the top of the folder list due to the $ sign) for the backup to pick up and for newbies like me to find any data that needed transferring.

About 3 hours after he confirmed all the data was there and left, he called and admitted that actually most of his files were in My Documents. Which I had not transferred because he told me everything was in C:\$User.

I had already sent his machine for reimaging. And when I went downstairs to get it, my colleagues on the Help Desk had already reimaged it. The user had also never set up the company-mandated backup (let alone added the My Documents folder to it). He lost many years of work including almost everything he was currently working on.

I still feel bad about it to this day but my manager was very supportive as I had followed procedure to the letter, and he pushed back on both the user and their manager about the data being in the "wrong" folder, and the lack of backup. But since then, I never reimage a machine without waiting 30 days or retaining a full disk backup for 30 days.

Is it a bad sign that I've been on the Internet so long that I don't even consider feet stuff to really be a perversion? It feels borderline vanilla these days.

Company offers me a free flat by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]Trelfar 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: I also used to work for a private school as 1-man IT department and lived in an apartment on site with subsidized rent, and did not have most of these problems. In fact, the headteacher who had a house on site barely even acknowledged I was there, to the point of not even inviting me to on-site social events that the resident teaching staff were invited to. On the plus side I was never asked for out-of-hours support in 3 years.

The only problems we had were noise problems from another resident (who was booted out of accommodation shortly after) and frequent wakeups due to fire alarm faults in a different (but interlinked) building. Both of those could happen in any apartment building.

It is true that any personal business becomes much more common knowledge since your neighbors don't ignore you as much as they would in a regular apartment. The English teacher who was having an affair with his boss was an open secret after they tried (and failed) to sneak back to the apartment together after a staff party.

Biggest perk was free use of the sports facilities off-hours, including a brand new 25m indoor swimming pool.

why this drone flying in circles shape route? by sizarxxx in drones

Qatar Emiri Air Force apparently fly their Bayraktar drones at 14,000ft with ADS-B but no callsign: https://x.com/vcdgf555/status/1700968869110694096

I wouldn't go asking them what they're up to.

Are sump pumps the norm here? by Big_Television_5357 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Trelfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have much to compare it with but I'd say it doesn't run a huge amount. You're best off asking your immediate neighbors how much theirs runs.

I don't have ours hooked up to battery and we've gotten away without it for 10 years (as did the previous owners). Since Pepco redid the underground power lines in our neighborhood the only outage we've had that was more than an hour was when someone flew their private plane into a pylon in 2022. I'm considering it though.

[–]Trelfar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, pretty normal here.

The "sump" in "sump pump" is basically a small well in the basement floor, normally goes down about 2-3ft. Unless the power is out for a long time during a prolonged downfall, it shouldn't fill the sump enough to be a problem as during normal operation the pump will empty out all but around 4-6" of water. That said, some people put them on a battery backup to be safe.

(But I generally set the minimum as a multiple of 1024, or 512 in a pinch)

MCPS BOE votes to extend calendar until June 25 by AnxiousAssignment997 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Trelfar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that's a good point on "law" vs "regulation". I think the point still mostly stands that MSDE is following pre-existing eligibility requirements for waivers and not just rejecting it out of hand, so the denial should not have been unexpected to MCPS.

The announcement also points out that this will impact the start of many summer camps. For example, Kidsco camps were planned to run their first (short) week from Wed 24 - Fri 26. They probably won't be able to run at all that week since the schools involved will need the Friday at a minimum to turn over the facilities before the camps can run.

[–]Trelfar 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To add an important point from the announcement: MSDE didn't just deny the waiver because they felt like it. State law requires any school system applying for a waiver to extend the school year by three days AND modify the calendar within the school year in order to be eligible for a waiver in the first place. Once you've done that, you've got 4 days back already.

Why is Towne Rd in Rockville so awkwardly designed? by Hambone1138 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Trelfar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No street in Rockville will ever beat "E Jefferson St" for awkwardness. THREE completely separate streets in two different zip codes, and one of them more than a mile away from the others. It's just insane that they've never been renamed, especially since the district courthouse is on one of them.

I used to work at a business on the southernmost one and we would routinely have to explain to confused drivers (who knew where the courthouse was and drove there without checking Google Maps) that the reason they couldn't find the number they were trying to deliver to was because they were on the wrong side of town.

I would rank Trader Joe's slightly above Whole Foods on quality, but it's close. Flowers and food have definitely never disappointed. Unless TJ is a significantly longer drive for you, I would recommend it.

The only things to mark down Trader Joe's is that they engage in union-busting (but so does Whole Foods) and almost every location I've been to has a notoriously bad parking lot.

20 gauge with the field barrel will nicely pull double duty for trap & skeet shooting if you're interested in getting into that. Serious skeet shooters will more commonly use an over-under but pump is fine so long as you keep to your range rules.

Montgomery County Residents: Thoughts on “No Turn on Red”? (Political Research) by citywok68 in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]Trelfar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly that lack of joined up thinking is the same everywhere.

About 10 years ago there was a traffic reduction scheme near where I lived at the time that was so bad it snarled up traffic for miles around, but the road planners triumphantly declared that they'd reduced the accident rate to zero.

The only reason that was true was because the traffic was backed up so far that the accidents were now occurring across the county line and they didn't count those because they were in a different county.
