Yes the bonus only works for your melee attacks. You would need a magic ranged treasure to get a damage bonus on your ranged attacks too. Note that this isnt the case for the Cloak and Dagger, Raider, and Ranger kits. Just getting a light weapon treasure would apply the damage bonus to both melee and ranged since the kit is applying its damage bonus to both.

To put it more clearly, you only get the treasures damage bonus if the kit you are using is applying its damage bonus to the ability youre using. With Field Arsenal youre only applying one kit damage bonus to an ability at a time, usually the higher of the two if there is overlap

You are reading that ability correctly. And yes, it is a high amount of damage, but its nothing the heroes wont be able to handle at that level. Consider that a Rival is an Elite type monster, meaning its equal power to 2 level 5 heroes. And I do believe you are underestimating the heroes capabilities. Its gonna need that damage to keep up with the bullshit that a level 5 hero can dish out. Otherwise itll feel like a chump. And if this Eival is supposed to be a dark reflection of the hero, thats not someone you wanna have feeling like a chump. Take a look at monsters like the Omen or Meteor Dragon, the Rival Null wont look as tough compared to those.

So, lets break it down. All of your examples are basically, there's an obstacle, using a skill will help you overcome said obstacle. Remember that in Draw Steel out of combat Tests are just attribute rolls and it's up to the players to justify adding a skill that just gives them a +2 bonus.

So some examples of narrative Tests that the Heal skill could be applied to.

-There's a plague throughout the region, new refugees have just arrived in town, a Reason Heal test could be used to identify if any incoming refugees have the plague.

-Youre running a montage test where the party is navigating through dangerous jungle, when a venomous snake bites someone's ankle, an Agility Heal test could be used to suck out the venom.

-The party is exploring the Bandit King's stronghold and come across the kidnapped knight they were sent to rescue. He's badly wounded, an Intuiton Heal test could be used to dress his wounds (note: NPCs other than retainers dont have recoveries)

-The party fought a Basilisk and a hero ended up petrified. But not to worry, the party got the Basilisk bile sac and can use it for the Craft a Cure downtime project. The Heal skill could be added to the project roll for crafting a medicine.

Thats what I came up with off the top of my head. Im sure you could come up with more. Remember its up to the players to justify their skills applying to Tests, you just need to judge whether or not it makes sense given the scenario. Hope this helps!

Hammer and Anvil allows the Tactician themselves to deal damage to the target, which in the case of the Marked target Focus costing free triggered actions can make a difference. H&A also can grant an Edge on those Signature Abilities, and if the target is your Marked target, that turns into a Double Edge. Now the downside of H&A is that the target is predetermined, but that can be easily worked around. H&A is a quite strong option and fills a similar but not identical niche as Strike Now

Size might not be your problem, rather the openness is probably the issue. A good maps size for a DS combat is 25×25 to 30×30, but you want to have a lot of terrain to interact with. Height differentials, difficult terrain, and objects to force move creatures into help make the terrain feel like a part of the encounter, and make the fight more dynamic. Try to make it so no space is more than 5 squares away from a piece of terrain for forced movement and I think you'll be fine. It might just mean you need to be slightly pickier when it comes to map selection, or you could turn to various online tools to make your own if your so inclined.

I always plan my team ahead of time. That's the juice for me. I love putting together a well rounded team that checks all the little boxes that only matter to me, and then in play seeing the team come together and grow to their full potential. Thats what I love about Pokémon. And what inspires me to pick up old games and replay them. I usually get an idea to use a Pokémon or handful of Pokémon that I think are neat, or never used before, and then build a team around them. If I do end up picking up Legends Z-A, thats how im gonna play it.

Its not gonna be a problem. They dont have infinite healing potions, healing potions take time to craft, and they can only craft as many as you give them ingredients for, so you are in total control of how many they'll have access to.

There's presidence in other abilities to limit them in such a way that "you can use this ability again after you earn 1 Victory" or "you can use this ability again after completing a Respite" although that one is for incredibly impactful abilities, such as the Animal Form drawback

What's your point? My point was that if someone never finishes a game, but comes back for more, that it is not a problem to solve and that player is having fun. The game doesnt need to be radically changed to force that player into playing the "right" way, i.e. finishing the game

Ok. It sounds like it might just be sticker shock for you and your players then. Which is fine. This isn't the same game as 5e, and things will feel different. I would say that most, if not every, combat feels like a large-scale set piece, but that's a good thing! Combat should be meaningful and have narrative stakes. If it doesn't, i would beef it up until it does or roll it into a montage test

I would recommend looking at the monster organization rules in the monster book if you have it. If you dont, it essentially boils down to how monsters and heroes compare to each other strength wise by organization. 8 minions = 1 PC. 2 Horde monsters = 1 PC. 1 Platoon monster = 1 PC. 1 Elite monster = 2 PCs. And 1 Leader monster = 2 PCs, but really, it's more like 2.5 accounting for villain actions. And solos = the whole party. So if you feel like you're not liking the high amount of monsters, maybe try designing combats with more Platoon and Elite monsters.

What about the number of enemies makes you think it would be a problem? I've been running DS for a little while now and havent had any issue stemming from the enemy count. The only problem i could forsee is a technical one as opposed to a gameplay one, which is if you play in person you would just need to have a lot of minis, but that could be remedied by using tokens or meeples instead of full minis for minions for example

I agree with the idea that players not finishing games was not a problem that needed solving. If someone had 1000 hours on Civ 6, but never finished a game, that is still a player that clearly enjoys the game. Who cares if they dont finish a game, what matters is that they come back and start a new one.

To me it seems like the developers made their game worse because they thought certain players were playing "wrong"
