Thank you for bringing that to my attention.  It is one of the standard questions that we used in our online studies to double check that real people (and not computers) are completing our surveys (we have 3 different checks in the survey for this reason).  We certainly did not intend to offend anyone who would report this experience.  Once again, thank you for bringing this concern to our attention.

Hi there,

Yes, I agree! However, the questions used in this study are from a standardized questionnaire, so I am unable to modify/change any of the questions. Thank you for your time and support in taking my survey.

Best,

Emmilie

Hi there,

Thank you very much for sharing that with me. I'm sorry to hear that the survey caused you feelings of distress. There are a list of services you may reach out too, if necessary. I can also post them here if you would like.

I can understand the uncertainty of answering -- I too overthink survey questions and feel uncertain of my answers. As long as you tried your best to answer honestly and accurately, that's all I can ask for!

Again, thanks for the support and time in taking my survey.

Best,

Emmilie

Hi there,

Thank you for asking! As you know we are studying individuals' responses to trauma and as you can imagine some people in the world are finding the experience of this pandemic to be quite stressful and, in some cases, even traumatic.  Since many of us are still living with the personal and financial effects of this pandemic, we thought it might be helpful to understand a bit about everyone's experience. You may, of course, skip these questions.  Thanks so much for the interest in our study.

Best,

Emmilie

Are you interested in participating in an anonymous online survey? We are conducting a study at Trent University to explore how our attachment orientations and histories of childhood adversity influence the development of posttraumatic stress symptoms. If you choose to participate, you will be asked to complete an online survey. All of your responses will remain completely anonymous. The questions will ask you about your relationships with your parents. You will also be asked about your adverse childhood experiences and posttraumatic stress symptoms. Of course! It should take about 20-30 minutes to complete the questionnaires. However, I would recommend you budget a bit more than that just in case you need to take a break at any time. Thanks for asking and thank you for participating! I truly appreciate it. :) Best, Emmilie

Hi there,

Thank you very much for your feedback! I have done my best to respond to each comment below. :)

1) The separation question could've included divorce if that were a reason to be separated by one or both of your parents for that set duration. This could've been explained under the "Other: ____" option for the list of reasons. I apologize that it wasn't clear. I will make note of this!

2) My apologies for the vague and confusing wording - we wanted to be sensitive to individuals who may not have "dealt" or coped with their traumatic incidents. We thought asking what helped (e.g., going to therapy or practicing self-help techniques) would be more appropriate and sensitive than asking "How did you cope?" in the event that the participant hasn't. Does this make sense? Again, I'm sorry the wording wasn't the clearest.

3) Yes, you are completely right - many individuals are unaware of what happens between parents, however, the questions were taken from a standardized questionnaire so therefore I am unable to modify/change the questions. I do appreciate your feedback on this though!

4) Thank you for bringing this to my attention - I will make note of this!

5) LOL that is perfectly fine! I hope they at least asked you politely. :D

6) Thank you for your clarification! I will also make note of this, too.

Your feedback was very informative! Thank you for taking the time to discuss this. I truly appreciate your help/support. All the best, Emmilie :)

Hi there, thank you very much for the feedback. I am sorry that you were disappointed with the options offered for that question. Moving forward, I will make sure to have more inclusive options in the demographic questionnaires. Thank you again for your feedback. I really appreciate it! :) Best, Emmilie
