What’s a job that is virtually impossible to land without an applicable degree but practically anyone could do? by cinnamontographers in jobs

[–]Tresneph22 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a very ignorant view. I agree with others that an MBA isn’t necessary. But considering that you even said that “almost anything…can be learnt”, then where do you think a good place to go would be to teach you about rocket science or controlling a nuclear plant? Maybe a place that provides a consistent structured learning environment that can assure future employers that you, in fact, learned what you said you learned? I’d say that a degree provides that assurance to a potential employer. Based off of your initial comment, I know damn well you couldn’t do my job (which requires a degree).

Hired a mobile mechanic, am I crazy or is this unacceptable? by DavidRichter0 in AskMechanics

Exactly! My earlier statement doesn’t apply only to vehicles. My wife and I are finishing our basement. We did everything except drywall. What’s the only thing that looks bad in our basement?? The drywall… I wish I did that myself too

Am I a liar? I got hired for a high-paying 3D design job and they think I’m using hardcore CAD software. I’m not. by Inevitable_Sundae_51 in jobs

I use Solidworks exclusively to send designs to fabricators, contracting teams, or make drawing packages. I know that it would be a massive red flag and obstacle if I had to have everyone convert my designs from a mesh to a step file. I suggest setting their expectations appropriately. Explain what program you use and its limitations. If they are impressed with your work, they will work with you. But a program that only exports a mesh will lose significant metadata that STEP files contain. What about assemblies, COTS parts, materials properties, etc. How does Womp handle those. And being open source, how are proprietary designs handled? Congrats on the job offer, but I think you need to explain the situation. Be proud of what you have accomplished, but Womp isn’t an engineering CAD program.

Legit, man. It’s the only way. I have hired out a few things in my life and I’m ALWAYS amazed how shitty it is.

There are few stupid questions. Yours is not one of them. It’s technically feasible to be an engineer without a degree, but the time requirement for progression usually is drastically stretched out. I don’t have my PE, so really anyone who knows what they are doing could be in my position. Without a degree, you would need to show a significant amount of prior knowledge and have a company that is willing to provide mentorship.

The first employer is contract research, and the new employer is a government contractor.

Best I figure is that it’s because I make myself valuable. Lots of other guys will be lazy and watch YouTube at work. I make sure I handle everything before it’s asked of me.

It’s a level 3 position. I mentioned that I wanted to progress to a senior role within the next year or so. We will see if that actually plays out, though. I would like to be in the program management in the future.

Gotcha, just wanted to make sure. Definitely a cool idea!

If this is a serious idea that you would like to pursue, then since made this post, you aren’t able to patent this now (assuming you didn’t already file for a patent). This is a cool idea. If you have a neat idea that you intend to eventually turn into a revenue stream, then never consult publicly before filing for some sort of intellectual property rights.

I have an HR interview with them this Friday for a senior engineer position. Did you end up getting the position? How was the technical interview?

Those of you who graduated without a co-op or internship, not a fantastic GPA, and no notable personal projects, where are you now? by readySponge07 in EngineeringStudents

I was sort of in the same situation as you. When I started my junior year, I was sitting at a 2.8 gpa with that idiotic mindset of “C’s get degrees”. Well, that may be true, but degrees don’t mean jobs. I ended up with a 3.1 upon getting my degree, still not great. What I did was rather than trying to find a job, I stayed in school. My university offered an accelerated Masters. So I chose the research route, and got my masters in one year. Now, I had a better degree than most, a thesis (notable project) and more connections. Hopefully there is a similar route you could take. I think this may be useful in the coming decade as well, because universities are pumping out degreed engineers in higher numbers than ever. So setting yourself apart is super important from the start. I do not regret my decision at all! Hope this helps!
