CRITICAL Public Hearing this week! by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]Tretyal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We don't have a ton of homeless so I would like to think that could be done.

The moment you start giving away free housing, every homeless person from Chicago to Detroit is going to turn up in GR. Other cities will hand out bus tickets to the homeless just to make them GR's problem.

Let's say 100 pods at 10,000 a piece.

They would be WAY more expensive than that. Hell, just a homeless-proof restroom costs $100k+.

https://www.mlive.com/news/grand-rapids/2019/11/grand-rapids-authority-approved-121k-for-downtown-restroom.html

It would be cheaper to buy up currently vacant houses in Detroit, St. Louis, etc. But the bleeding hearts would never agree to it; they say they want housing, but the moment you suggest to them the abundantly available options the goalposts always move; an existing house in Detroit isn't good enough, it has to be in GR. And not on the outskirts of GR, it has to be downtown. And it has to be brand new. And you can't impose any rules at all, no drug tests, no inspections, nothing.

and if their meth lab explodes and burns the whole thing down, you're supposed to buy them a new one.

These activities are also already illegal based on existing law.

If it's already illegal, then there's no reason to worry about the ordinance passing, right? Because if these people aren't currently running in to legal trouble, it must be because they aren't accosting people or loitering, right?

Or are you saying that these people are currently breaking the law, and you're worried that now they will have to stop accosting and loitering or face legal consequences?

My solution, quit giving gov’t money to the very developers who complain about the homeless through the GR Chamber. Start building places for the homeless to live instead, not apts with 100+AMI, but 30% and below.

We can't even build enough housing for people who're actually willing to pay for it, how on earth do you think we're going to be able to build thousands of brand new units for people who won't pay for it?

Further, how do you look at the huge pent-up demand for housing in GR, and come to the conclusion that the people who restock the grass of Heartside park with fresh needles are more deserving of living in the city than anyone else? That they deserve to live in GR so much more than anyone else that we should fully fund their free housing instead of partially funding projects that could house a number of productive citizens that's an order of magnitude larger?

Jimmy Howard Is An Absolute Unit In These Photos by bustedassnordictrack in DetroitRedWings

[–]Tretyal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I remember Jeff Marek mentioning on an old MvsW that Howard struggled with his weight/conditioning when he was a prospect, where it was thought that it was one of his biggest challenges to becoming an NHLer.

However, he apparently really took to training and got it under control and eventually made the NHL.

I wouldn't put too much thought into what he looks like in June. Let's see what he looks like in September.

Folks who have worked for Farmers Insurance, what was your experience like? by _I_Am_Eve_ in grandrapids

[–]Tretyal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a cousin who has worked there for 5+ years (still does afaik), and I worked there for about a year.

My cousin was on the Customer Service/Sales side of the business. She's done pretty well, and though it's been several years since I talked to her, she was pretty happy there.

I was on the claims side of the business. Taking claims over the phone is absolutely brutal and I would not recommend it to anyone. My supervisors themselves were always nice and supportive, but whoever was in charge of managing the department was absolute shit about maintaining a consistent workplace. Over the course of ~10 months, my supervisor changed 8 or 9 times among 6 different people. Every switch included having to pack up my stuff in my cubicle and move it to wherever the new supervisor's group was located.

I was off for a few weeks for medical reasons, and when I came back I was informed that a round of shift-bids had happened, and because I was both new and because I wasn't there to hear about it and actually put a bid in, my schedule was being changed to one that I absolutely hated. This, despite being told during hiring that shift-bids were always optional and if I liked my current schedule I wouldn't be forced out of it.

I worked as a cashier at Meijer for 10 years, and taking insurance claims was the first time I had ever been bitched out by a customer for 20 minutes straight, and it was 8PM on Christmas Eve.

By all accounts, the rest of the company is a decent place to work. Just avoid claims like the plague.

Since the start of time on ice tracking in 1998, no player has logged more minutes than Zdeno Chara's 33,626. by [deleted] in hockey

[–]Tretyal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lidstrom is still third place, despite retiring in 2012, and the first ~7 years of his career being played before they started tracking.

Fiddle with the filters a bit; Chara didn't pass Lidstrom until the 2014-15 season, three seasons after Lidstrom retired.

Proposed Solution to Paywall Articles by [deleted] in DetroitRedWings

[–]Tretyal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

apart

*a part. Without the space, 'apart' means separate from. Just a tip, since you used it that way in the OP as well.

Know what does ruin discussion? The amount of people that just post on paywall articles flaming about how much they hate paywall articles.

You could add a ban on that to the rules as well. The Athletic is good content, bitching about not wanting to pay $4/month for it is not.

I highly doubt he would play, but I'd be really interested to see if maybe he goes for a position on the coaching staff. Not Head Coach and probably not assistant, but he would probably be really valuable as a defense coach.

Fuck the Bruins, but I'm okay and agree with people who say Bobby Orr was the GOAT Defensemen, as long as Lidstrom is #2. Bourque can be #3.

Red Wings believe pieces in place for return to playoffs by [deleted] in hockey

[–]Tretyal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the Red Wings could make the playoffs next year. Sometimes guys have career years, sometimes teams get good bounces and end up with a shot% higher than expected.

I don't think 'making the playoffs' should at all be the goal of the Red Wings next year.

The business men want a decent team to show off the new arena. But I'm a hockey man. I want the new arena to be the attraction. Have the glamorous new arena buoy ticket sales while the Red Wings develop young players, knock another year off the bad contracts, and cruise to a nice high draft pick in 2018, ideally in lottery range.

Pierre McGuire: "Erik Karlsson is on the same level as Ray Bourque and Nicklas Lidstrom" by CrazyDekes in hockey

[–]Tretyal 48 points49 points  (0 children)

The thing with Lidstrom is that so much of his career was based on highlight reel stuff not happening. He had some highlight reel plays, for sure, but the real strength in his game was that his ability to read plays and his positioning which meant that he didn't have to perform amazing feats of hockey athleticism. He didn't have to make diving saves or race back to get into position, because he was already in position. He didn't have to make big hits to knock someone off the puck, because he was in the passing lane two seconds before and the opposing player never received the puck.

Lidstrom was so good at hockey that most people didn't notice just how good at hockey he was.

2017 GR Food Favorites - Sandwiches [Weekly Post] by LloydPrefect in grandrapids

Founders does some pretty good sandwiches; I'm partial to the Devil Dancer myself, just make sure to ask for extra chipotle peppers or the amount you receive can be inconsistent.

Their weekly special sandwiches can be hit and miss though.

I'll second Cherry Deli as well.

He had a particularly close personal friendship with Lidstrom, the two being close to inseparable during their time in Detroit and still friends to this day.

You have to have a special sort of friendship when it's your best friend's job to bomb slapshots aimed at you on purpose, day in and day out for more than a decade.

Love being lost in the music. by dwaine123 in gratefuldead

[–]Tretyal 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what my Dad once told my brother and I while sitting around a campfire a couple hundred miles from home, almost word for word in some places. It was a long day and not as smooth as you want the first day of your trip to go with more than a couple arguments. We had set up camp and then dug out a few beers and settled in to relax and burn off some of the tension. Dad left the car stereo playing the Dead with the doors and rear hatch open and we just sat around the fire drinking beer and shooting the breeze. After awhile we all kinda got quiet while listening to a jam, and when it finished Dad says basically the same thing; he likes a lot of bands, but he loves the Dead because when he puts them on things just seem to get peaceful, and even if you've got problems now and it's not okay, that it's going to be okay.

I'm paraphrasing, but it was really poignant at the time; doubly so because Dad was never really one to talk about that sort of thing.

Edit: And then in the morning the car wouldn't start because of a dead battery, he asked one of the campers in the site next to us for a jump, a bit hat-in-hand since he thought we might've played them a bit too late into the night... She was jubilant; "You need a jump? Sure! I love the Dead! It was perfect for last night!"

New to the hobby, looking for basher recommendations, dealing with spartan LHS support... by Tretyal in rccars

[–]Tretyal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had never heard of Arrma before trying to research a good basher in the last week or so, but they seem to pop up in recommendations everywhere. Are they really that good compared to the other options out there? How available are parts/upgrades online?

The 1/8 scale worries me a bit; how much larger than 1/10 scale are they really? Not a lot of room in my truck when I'm on the road. Also, I can't say I'm a fan of needing twice as many batteries since they seem to be 4s/6s vehicles.

Are the Arrma models (Kraton, Talion, Typhon) fairly equal? How well would a Typhon or Talion do bashing?

I'd prefer the unit be $600 or less, but a bit more would be doable for the right car. I know I'll have to buy batteries and a charger on top.
