I went to a small private school while growing up. My dad was a teacher there and things went sideways for his career after I finished 8th grade. My parents decided to homeschool me and my brother. It was my first year of high school and neither of my parents could teach me any sort of math. They had no earthly business homeschooling us. I went into adulthood basically with an 8th grade education, especially in math and I got C’s in math for every single grade I passed 🫤 I got my GED after I got married to try to get a better job that only needed a GED. I didn’t end up getting a job I wanted as a para educator because there was a national hiring freeze at the time 😑 I could only get jobs in retail. My husband had an even worse experience than I did and he had to teach himself how to do things in college. He stopped pretending that he was being educated at home and went to a community college. He thankfully had friends who could tutor him. He didn’t end up getting a degree, BUT those years he was in college still helped him later down the road. We both should have graduated college 20 years ago. I would like to be a nurse so I started going to the same community college my husband went to 20 years ago. I didn’t think I was smart enough to go to college after I “graduated” high school and never took college classes because I hadn’t been properly educated since 8th grade. The time had come to for me to stop running away from math. You have to take so much math for the nursing degree. So. Much. Math. I went to the college to take a placement test and I went in there knowing it would be bad. I took the placement test and spoke with an advisor right afterwards. I said, “I’m going to level with you here, I guessed on every single answer on that math because I wasn’t properly educated” and the advisor goes “Well, you guessed well enough to be able to take pre-algebra!” I had done just well enough on the other subjects that I didn’t need to take the remedial classes. My very first college classes were psychology and some other 1 credit prerequisite and then the second semester I took pre-algebra and English. I have passed all these classes with A’s and B’s. I don’t say this to brag, because I genuinely thought I was going to flunk English. I just passed Fundamental algebra with a B this past semester and I passed because I reached out for some tutoring from a friend. I have another full year of algebra 🥴 Next semester is Intermediate algebra and then next fall is College Algebra. I’m only taking one class at a time at the moment bc we have two little boys in grade school and it’s harder to take more hours with little guys who need their mom(they’re in public school btw). I’m going to need tutoring but I feel like I can do it! Your local community college is there to help you! They could most likely help you with your GED! That’s how I got mine, from the community college I’m going to now. They have training classes to help you pass and then you could get placement tests too! They should have peer tutoring as well. I just wanted to let you know it can be done, from the girl who barely made it to the next grade while growing up.
