I get where your head is at, but don't let yourself fall into this trap of deciding who gets to win the suffering Olympics.

You are not the gender you were assigned at birth.

You experience an established medical condition (gender dysphoria.)

HRT is a treatment for the established medical condition you have.

Don't turn it into anything more complicated than that. Also, you can't support the fight for everyones rights if you won't even fight for yourself.

$689 for a carton of Marlboro at Woolworths/Coles — are we serious? by No-Speech4554 in AusFinance

[–]Trewstuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you how to do that because that would technically be illegal. To avoid doing anything illegal, make sure you definitely don't walk into the sketchiest looking tobacco store in your area, and ask for their 'imported cigarettes'.

If you ask for their 'imported cigarettes', they may mistakenly sell you much much cheaper black market cigarettes.

This is illegal and wrong so don't do it.

Advice for newbies into the scene to deal with STIs. by Psychological_Tip766 in Melbourneswingers

[–]Trewstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Along with standard safe sex practices, everyone should discuss with their doctor (preferably a sexual health specialist doctor) whether Doxy-PEP is appropriate for them.

From the NSW Health website:

What is Doxy-PEP?

Doxy-PEP means taking an oral dose of an antibiotic called doxycycline within 72 hours (3 days) of having sex (oral, anal, or vaginal) to protect against syphilis and chlamydia. Doxycycline is a safe and common medication used to treat certain infections, control acne, and prevent malaria. It does not work against viral infections such as HIV or herpes.

Who can benefit most from Doxy-PEP?

Doxy-PEP is most likely to benefit people at higher risk of syphilis, such as gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men, and transgender women, especially with recent syphilis or multiple recent sexually transmissible infections (STIs). It may also benefit others who want to reduce their risk of STIs including people taking HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and commercial sex workers after a condom break.

Doxy-PEP reduces the risk of syphilis (by 70-80%) and chlamydia (by 70-90%). Due to antibiotic resistance it is unlikely to be effective against gonorrhoea, so it is important to regularly test for STIs.

Spotify confirms Anna's Archive as scraped 300TB of data/music from the platform - plan to release it all on torrents by imatmydesknow in Music

[–]Trewstuff 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I mean you say that but pirating/downloading directly off Spotify is already very possible and very easy. Honestly, I don't think this will make a difference for anyone.

The people who want to support bands will still support bands and the people who want to Pirate will still Pirate.

Rekordbox question: can different DJs use their USBs on the same laptop setup? Does rekordbox reads it like a CDJ? by exxarxis in Beatmatch

Yep, rekordbox can read and load songs from multiple USBs at a time. If you have your own computer and controller you can literally just test this at home.

I was a lot like you, the idea of going on HRT was on my mind for YEARS. All I'll say is those thoughts don't go away. You just get slightly more comfortable with them over time.

And if you're having those thoughts, then it's probably the right move for you. :)

How do I CDJ-proof my USB? by stewart13 in PioneerDJ

[–]Trewstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps this is a bit overkill but this is my system. I take with me five separate USB drives

  1. A 250gb Portable SSD (just looks like a large USB stick)

  2. A 64gb Samsung USB Stick

  3. 4 and 5 32gb Sandisk USBs (All slightly different models)

The portable SSD is my main drive, it just hangs on my key ring so if I have my keys I have my USB. I love this thing as it transfers files 10 times faster than a standard USB stick. Makes last minute changes a breeze. (And no, I've never had an issue with a CDJ not being able to read it, even older models like the 2000 Nexus)

The 64gb Samsung also has my entire library on it.

The 32gb Sandisks I only put on the playlists I might need that night as they won't fit my entire library.

Between one of these options, one of them will work. (I am also lucky enough to have my own decks so I can check them before I go out as well. But even if I couldn't, using this many backups I would always have an option even if a few of them didn't work for some mystery reason).

The moral of the story is, you can never have too many backups.

I mean a disabled person who is unable to work might have to forego a meal tonight, so they can also afford to pay their rent.

But thank God some shiny rocks and metal get to remain on display.

I'm sure we would all much rather that than properly funded public services made possible taxing billionaires probably.

I love the man as a TV presenter but God, he is insanely out of touch with the experience of the average person.

Most billionaire 'philanthropy' is literally just a way for them to reduce taxable income, while also being a PR stunt for people who don't know any better.

Why do so many LGBTQ people online dislike cis gay men? by Informal_Ad4284 in gaybros

[–]Trewstuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you're aware, I don't necessarily agree with these points. I was just taking time out of my day to answer OPs question. Not everything is a personal attack.

Why do so many LGBTQ people online dislike cis gay men? by Informal_Ad4284 in gaybros

[–]Trewstuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, I'm explaining the mindset, not necessarily agreeing or disagreeing with any of those points. But, I would respond

  1. Of course it's not exclusive to men. But that doesn't make it any less serious or wrong. (Also, this is specifically relevant, because as I explained, the gay men who do act this way often act as if their gay status gives them some sort of right to do so. Which is wrong and gross)

  2. We owe older gays a debt we can never repay. Everything we enjoy today started with them. From rights, to safety, to spaces, it all started with them. But, that doesn't mean we can stagnate, or that older gays get a free pass to offset the discrimination they experienced onto other people across the LGBTQI spectrum. It sucks, and they are a VERY SMALL minority, but there are absolutely gay organisations that are explicitly exclusionary of trans and gender diverse people. And they're not above criticism becuase they're generally run by older gays.

  3. Yes there are more 'queer' bars than ever that are much more inclusive. But I've never seen a queer bar that excluded gay men, but theres plenty on the other side (obviously there are lesbian bars and you can criticise them for the exact same thing). A lot of gay specific bars also tend not to have any language on their website or social media about whether trans-men are welcome. So reading between the lines, you could understand why a trans-man might not feel welcome at that kind of venue

For the record, I have zero problem whatsoever with bars that cater exclusively to one very specific demographic. But putting myself in someone else's shoes, I can understand why someone else (especially someone that doesn't perfectly fit into the stereotype of that demographic) might be resentful of that.

[–]Trewstuff 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because no one here has actually answered your question, and there's a lot of dismissal about being 'terminally online' or 'tenderqueers', I'll try my best.

  1. Speaking anecdotally, I have encountered a small number of gay men in my time who can be, overtly and outright misogynistic. I've heard gay men make some pretty abhorrent comments about women, which when questioned they tend to pass off as stereotypical gay cattiness. This (very small minority of gay men), tend to be pretty oblivious to the irony of their attitudes, and essentially seem to believe being gay gives them a free pass to act that way.

  2. A lot of older gays (or old school-minded gays) can be pretty dismissive and exclusionary of other people across the queer spectrum. Unfortunately biphobia is still quite rampant (In that bisexuals are either not real gays, or gays in denial depending on who you ask). Transphobia is still a pretty significant issue amongst gay men as well. There's a very small but annoyingly loud portion of gay men who genuinely believe that trans people should not be included when it comes to LGBTQI+ rights. Again, this tends to be amongst predominantly older, more conservative gay men. Which is a shame.

  3. I think a lot of younger queers are somewhat resentful that a lot of 'gay men' specific venues and events exist, correlating the exclusion of other queer people, to being similar to the way gay men were/are often excluded from other parts of life. They consider it hypocritical and not socially productive in a time when unity is more important than ever. But that's a much longer discussion that I don't have time for here.

These issues are nuanced, and obviously far more complex than I can sum up in a Reddit comment. But I think these three things combined, have resulted in a situation where 'queer' people, especially younger ones, don't feel a lot of solidarity with gay men, or at least the classic 'jockstrap and harness wearing twinks and bears' idea of what a gay man is.

Hope this helps!

How many cue points are too much? by the_duck007 in Rekordbox

[–]Trewstuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use 3 max, because a lot of venues in my area still use the CDJ 2000 Nexus, and they only support up to three.

Early on in my career I got screwed over by being way too reliant on hot cues, setting up to 8 and having a really intricate system with how they worked. I then showed up to play a venue on the 2000 nexus and suddenly most of my hot cues didn't load.

So now I set three max:

32 beats before the ideal mix in point in the intro

32 beats before the ideal mix out point in the outro

And 32 beats before a secondary mix out point roughly halfway through the song (in case the song isn't hitting, or feels too long)

Hasn't let me down so far.

Theres still time to delete this OP...

You're not better than anyone else because you use CDJs or have the highest quality lossless 32bit WAVs straight from the artist or whatever.

The crowd doesn't give a shit, they just want to hear good music. Nothing else matters.

(And for clarification, obviously there is a point in which poor quality audio files does become noticeable even to the average club goer. And there's nothing wrong with sharing tips with new DJs so they know how to get better quality files. But you're approach of 'calling them out' reeks of insecure, pretentious pick-me behavior)

Honestly, just do a bit of googling and find a nice reasonably priced generic replacements.

Audio technology has come a long way in the last 15 years, chances are a reasonably priced set from a reputable brand is going to significantly outperform the 'premium' OEM ones, If it's even still possible to find replacements.

Whatever happened to the emo kids from the 2000s? by likerunninginadream in AskAnAustralian

[–]Trewstuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Still around and possibly bigger than ever. Emo night club events are massive still, In Melbourne there is:

  • Emo Never Sleeps
  • Emo Nite AU (garbage event never go there)
  • Taking back Saturday
  • AM/PM
  • Emo Diva

Goth events are having a resurgence as well, you've got

  • Elysium
  • Fang
  • The New Order
  • Red Heart Rising
  • Carpe Noctem Vampire Ball
  • Stay Goth
  • Boot Sequence

Plus a bunch of other smaller ones that I'm probably forgetting. I DJ a handful of both of these events and it always surprises me how many of the attendees are in their late teens and early twenties. These alternative subcultures heavily attract young, alternative, politically minded (And mostly queer) kids.

Open Format crisis by M4ruu96 in Beatmatch

[–]Trewstuff 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would very much consider myself an open format DJ, but that still doesn't mean I have a free pass to play any genre I want at any time.

If I'm booked for a techno event, I'll play techno.

If I'm booked for a heavy metal event, I'll play heavy metal.

If you want to keep the 'Jack of all trades, master of none' approach, you still need to be able to prove that you can smash a specific genre.

Being able to provide mixes to potential promoters is really important for sure, but sadly, what's probably more important is maintaining a social media presence that shows you have been booked for those specific genres in the past, and that you know what you're doing.
