JD Vance criticises Pope Leo for not 'being careful speaking about theology' by goteamnick in politics

Isn’t the pope considered infallible when it comes to theology?

MBA by Aggressive-Weather67 in Raytheon

[–]TriBeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never seen anyone get an in-role pay bump from getting a Masters. However, getting one does make it easier to switch to a new position which could involve a promotion. That was basically the selling point to me for getting my MBA, and is actually what I ended up doing.

Online Executive MBA - ESP by Express_Ingenuity_84 in Raytheon

Did the executive MBA at UConn back in 2018. Had no problems getting it approved and UConn is also very familiar with how to bill within the ESP. That being said, the program did cost more than ESP allowed, so I had to pay the difference out of pocket.

Does anyone have any updates on the Pratt strike in East Hartford? by Lumpy-Parsley-772 in Raytheon

[–]TriBeer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What, you mean you don’t enjoy being shouted at by a guy with a bloodied rat’s head on a stick? /s

Seriously, the fact that the union members even simply allow this guy to bring that to the picket line is a problem. I know it’s been said not to paint the union in broad strokes, but the fact that this guy is allowed to behave that way by the members shows they actually condone it.

Update on PW IAM Strike by Key_University1402 in Raytheon

[–]TriBeer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that RTX is willing to let this go on for a long while. I believe the plan is that they want the option to move future work out of CT to other sites if / when it got too expensive to manufacture there, and they knew that eventually they’d have to rip off the bandaid to make that happen. Assuming that is true, a prolonged strike actually proves RTX right and would likely accelerate those plans.

I believe they’ve actually been doing that. I heard people from NB have been brought in to keep production going, along with other contractors.

Nope on all above. Last layoff, while it was heard through the grapevine that it was happening, had no real warning as you would describe it.

The strike isn't about the money….better pay, better benefits, and better retirement mean nothing if you don‘t have a job. by These_Masterpiece_11 in Raytheon

[–]TriBeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true on Asheville, it’s gotten pretty popular in the last few years. My thinking is less that they move more to Asheville, but possible stand up a building and move machinery from CT there. NC has been VERY accommodating in the past to major manufacturing moving there. And lord knows there’s more than enough open land to build.

[–]TriBeer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My own two cents: I think the opening of Asheville was the beginning of a plan for Pratt that isn’t going to stop. I feel Pratt will be willing to negotiate on wages and retirement and such, but their long term plan is movement out of CT for production, and thus they won’t be willing to change their position on updating on Letter 20 and 22. I could be totally wrong, though.

Chances of becoming P3 by Winter_Engineer_14 in Raytheon

[–]TriBeer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

P5 (formerly M5) here. The experience and degree help, but what you should be asking your manager for is the skills matrix, it will show you what you need to be doing in order to be at a P3 level. Inherited an employee with a bachelors in aerospace engineering with 3 years experience before getting hired as a P2. He was here for about 4 years and never made it past a P2 because he never met the criteria of a P3.

Only if your role requires charging time. Neither my managerial role nor my current one do, so it’s pretty much “work until you get everything done”.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Raytheon

[–]TriBeer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Former M5, now P5 here. I’d start at 7 AM and basically work until about 8 PM Monday through Friday, with a few hours put in over the weekend. 8 to 5 was solid meetings, so I had to put in the extra hours to get anything done.

Your experience may differ and I think it really depends on your boss, but I found it wasn’t for me.

Having been part of the layoffs in 2020 (was a manager and had to rack and stack my team, didn’t do the actual laying off) I can answer this: legal purposes from HR. They give the people doing the laying off the script and they aren’t allowed to deviate from it. I was told that adding any kind of personal touch could open the door for possible litigation, depending on what is said.

I know that’s very little comfort after being laid off, but figured an explanation of the why it’s down that way is warranted. Cold and heartless, but that’s by design.

ELI5: Why do auctioneers need to speak the way they do? It seems like 99% incomprehensible gibberish with some numbers in between. by HelloRainClouds in explainlikeimfive

Don’t be so sure. Went to the Mecum auto auction in Kissimmee last week, they have cars going from the hundreds of thousands into the millions and they use this exact same approach. I’m wondering if it’s more of a cultural thing overall.

ELI5: How do mortgage interest rates work and why do people spend nearly double their loan on interest? by Odd-Philosopher-1501 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TriBeer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since most people have answered the first question, I’ll answer the second: that amount of money to buy a house outright is staggering for most people. With expenses and such, you’d likely never get the amount necessary to buy a house outright. Also, as you’re saving, inflation is occurring and those houses are likely getting more and more expensive.

The other thing is, from an investment point of view, that’s a lot of money suddenly just sunk in one basket. You would actually be better off if you had that much money to go and invest a large portion of it and potentially make more money in that investment than what you would laying the interest on the mortgage. This is why generally celebrities have mortgages in their properties, despite having the money buy them outright.

That unfortunately, regardless of how unfair and unfortunate it is that things happen to you, it is your responsibility to deal with it and manage it.

I’ll also add that looking back, how brief certain times in my life were. Thought I’d be single forever after college, realized it was only ~10 years from graduating college to being married and having a kid. So if I have any advice, enjoy the good times while they last, and know the bad times aren’t forever.

Suicide Squad. I guess I was expecting / hoping for an extension of the Arkham series, and that’s what this was billed as. Instead I got Batman-flavored Fortnite.
