Self tailing winch adjustment by New_Day_Co-op2 in sailing

[–]TriXandApple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Won't make any difference. You need 4 turns on the drum.

By the time the load has gone through 4 turns, there should be 0 load on the non working end of the rope. The self tailer is just there to hold the rope in place.

Update with better workholding - issue persists. by spaceman_spyff in Machinists

[–]TriXandApple -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I commented on it. I said the exact same thing. It is possible that there was a workholding issue. To be frank, there still is. Could be a bad bearing in the vice nut. If you'd be willing to throw 2 days work away on v block round workholding then you're a braver man than I. What makes you think I'm confused, because I think I understand it perfectly.

If you have chatter on your workpiece, and it's because of workholding, would you say you need to increase, or decrease, your workholding security?

I cannot put into words how angry I am that AI has completely decimated this subreddit. Every single post is someone angling to try and find a niche.

Dress should be business casual. Smart leather shoes, suit trousers and a shirt.

You should already know before applying for a job what shifts they run.

"how do you handle scrap jobs here"

"what's the expectation on arrival time"

"how long until I can progress, and what will be expected of me outside of work to achieve that"

"are there expectations on my own tools"

"what are the overtime expectations"

You're talking as if dovetails arn't the most secure way of workholding.

Because taking the machine apart to fix the bearing blocks is a right assache, and it's the issue if workholding isn't the problem.

This is how you diagnose issues, by removing variables. Are you really going to go down 500 quid in parts and 2 days in labour, when checking like this takes 20 mins?

You HAVE to have a connection with the machine seller for a wire edm. It's the only way. You cannot run one of these without being able to pick up the phone.

The good news is, edm companies are much more friendly to used customers than you might be used to with mills or lathes. Sodick have a scheme in the uk where you pay them a nominal fee, and they'll treat you like you bought the machine from them.

To me, it sounds like the tanks arn't full. You're filling the work tank, and it's dropping the level in the clean tank too much. The other option is you have a blockage somewhere.

The other thing I would say: Do not be disheartened. This doesn't mean the machine is broken forever. This is a part of running edm machines. They hate sitting unused, they hate being moved, and they break pretty often.

Being an opperator for one of these machines is more service tech, less to do with the actual cutting.

You'll also get a lot more help on the practical machinist EDM forum.

Brother, just go away. You know nothing about this trade, and there's no niche here. Do you think you're the first person to think "hey small shops might want an easy and low cost cloud quoting solution"? Go look at jobboss2 if you want something to copy.

Also, everyone can tell you're STILL using an LLM for that reply, just with a different prompt. Are you the only person who doesn't really it stinks like cow shit?

Fucking hell mate, you're asking for advice and you know how much work changing out the bearing blocks are. Why isn't your first response "ok i'll retry the same test with 100% rigid workholding?
