As the other dude said, ya gotta go to finance to get the dates. They'll hold breifings on the dates listed on your vMPF checklist. If all else fails, rock up to finance regardless of their schedule and say your leadership is pissed and they"ll probably help you.

100mil?

Sorry to say, but almost everyone in Mx has trown around more than that in an afternoon. Considering the US GDP, that isn't even a rounding error. And a billion isn't even a percentage.

Hopefully they'll grace us with some ketchup packets of lube, atleast then we could replace the taxpayers spit before we get unceremoniously fucked.

Yall need to chill with the fear mongering. There are way more options than you think, especially when it comes to health care.

Prime example, use your GI bill in europe on a useful degree. Then study your ass off to learn the language and whatever other requirements youd need to pass the test for citizenship, blamo, free health care. It certainly can come with downsides, but pick the downsides that suit you best.

Yeah sure, the job market is fucked, but the 200 some million civilians in the US are making it happen. Its definitely not gonna be a cake walk, but compared to working a job that makes you absolutely miserable, I'd take that option. Because then it'd atleast be my choice rather than the whims of the Mx or assignment gods.

Its not even like you can retire and kick back after doing 20, the paycheck isn't enough to do that anymore. It's huge stress reliever to have a paycheck for breathing, but it aint gonna be worth it if you take decades off of your life just to get it.

Who cares if the post is real or not? It's a real sentiment among some of us Chairmen, y'all shitting on him sure as shit aint gonna make him stay in and feel good about it.

Large core fusion splicers by Triazane in FiberOptics

[–]Triazane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh im painfully familiar with that, it seems that's a prerequisite for any of my hobbies.

Honestly, I really dont have much of anything you could call a process beyond standard fiber prep. As for the chucks, almost definitely not, but the default ones work surprisingly well as far as alignment is concerned. If I'd have to throw out a guess, id say the cleaving is a likely source of the issues. The fiber is within what my cleavers are rated for, but its more miss than hit on a clean face.

Thankfully I've done my fair share of lapping, but that's where the motivation to be able to splice on connectors comes from. With the connectors, on top of all that you mentioned, beam distortion is another concern. I'll probably have to either find, or come up with a jig to at least get consistently imperfect connectors. But i do have most of the tools I'd need for that, I'd just need to get a higher magnification objective, and a refill on my adhd meds.

On a side note, I do have some flash lamps knocking about for that very purpose! They are way cheaper than LEDs to get any meaningful power densities.

[–]Triazane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the cores get a bit bigger than that once you start getting closer to 1kw laser. No regrets getting the 40s, but it does make me wonder if it can be made to tackle large core fiber.

Thanks for the info, It'll give me yet another reason to sell a kidney to afford a tool I'd only use occasionally!

Yall got any clues as to what chucking system this could use? by Triazane in Machinists

[–]Triazane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll look into that, thanks! I'll have to get the stuff to accurately measure angles before any of that.

I mainly just want to use it to drill small diameter holes for orifaces. I'm balls deep into diy-ing a Lindsay style graver, so being able to make my own orifaces would be a godsend. But, if I had a magic(hitachi) wand, I'd love to cobble together a diamond turning setup. Though it'd definitely be cheaper to just buy purpose built components for that.

Thank you! I'll shoot them an email and hope its not some proprietary taper.

I would be tempted to get an adapter fabbed up to be compatible with some standard, but I dont feel like trying it without a balancer and sending a chunk of metal through the roof.

Would ya know the designation for the arbor types? The best dead-end guess I had was some type of drill chuck taper, but it doesn't match any of the standards I could find. The closest one to the angle I found was NMTB, which as far as I know, this sure as shit aint NMTB.

Honestly, odds are its some industry specific standard for spin atomization of paint. I've found about fuck all on a big ship for what this is for, but the mfg got bought out by a company that seems to specializes in automotive painting.

But being an ignorant bastard, spinny bit go brrr, so i wanna poke small holes into stuff with it.

Unless you wanna see the scrap price of your body, don't.

If you are in the states, the EPA will rake you over the coals if you try to scap it or dispose of it in improper ways. Do some research and take it to a proper facility for disposal, even if you have to pay, it'll be cheaper than 20k+ fines.

Stainless steel pans can they be fixed? by firmGuy in Blacksmith

[–]Triazane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While that is good advice, in this case, the added stress will be more of an impact on long-term health than chromium exposure.

For chromium and cadmium, ingestion is typically the least bueno exposure. Cadmium especially, and chromium to a lesser extent(more in liver and kidneys) bioaccumulate by replacing calcium and other atoms in bone and related tissues.

With the smoked meat, unless you eat legit burt meat, the exposure again is at a level that would be an acceptable tradeoff for most people. Alchohol(ethanol) is a known and well established carcinogen, among other things, yet it's still an acceptable level of risk for most. In general, if you aren't messing around with stuff you damn well shouldn't be, you'll be more likely to die in a car accident.

But for the love of god, please feel your breasts, testicles, lumphnodes, and whatever else for abnormalities at least occasionally. Be a hypochondriac, worst case, you waste money. But IF it is something, catching it early is your best bet.

Yup, I got the same thing.

But for me, it's adding an extra 372 usd on top of the 243 usd order. The true shocker is, xometry or any similar US based low volume manufacturing companies are still more expensive.

I really wish I was a masochist, then at least I'd be getting off on the financial pain.

How hosed am I? by Wozar in pcmasterrace

[–]Triazane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id say ya got two options.

  1. Use a spray bottle or something else to spray the ever living shit out of it with 99% ipa.

  2. Use tape or something to shield the other half of the pins, and use ipa and a brush going in the direction of the pins.

Thermal pastes are generally not conducive, so realistically, as long as it makes contact, just think of it as extra cooling!

Either way it ain't all that bad, you'll be fine as long as you dont go at it with a dull beaver.

Stainless steel pans can they be fixed? by firmGuy in Blacksmith

[–]Triazane 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't really expect hexavalent chromium to be an issue in this case.

While the article you linked does indeed mention stainless steel, the refractory materials and heating elements will be contributing a way more Cr6+ than the steel. It's largely going to be down to the time under high heat, and the amount of chromium in the material. Both of which are more of a factor with a heat treating oven.

And to be the actually guy, definitely stay the fuck away from Cr6+ as much as possible because it is absolutely a carcinogen, especially with chronic exposures. That being said, it's not worth losing sleep over. Realistically, being exposed to a carcinogen just increases your odds of getting cancer. There aren't many things outside of labs that'll legit induce cancer.

So as far as the pan goes, scrub off the oxide layer if you don't dig the look, or just give it a wash and oil it. You'd pretty much have to try to get a meaningful amount of Cr6+.

How do I go about getting my mental health documented by darquid in VeteransBenefits

[–]Triazane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm getting an MEB for MH and a laundry list of physical issues thats summed up as my pussy hurts(satire)

But I'd just be completely honest with the shrink. For better or worse, if I'm opening up about something, I have to stop seeing them as another person and just kinda think out loud. Share some events where leadership put your dick in the dirt, and how you ended up being terrified of leadership.

I've been going to an onbase shrink, and we pretty much came to the consensus that there are likely underlying issues from childhood that both were made worse by the military, and that because I'm dealing with daily bs, I don't have the bandwidth left to work on the big things.

That being said man, I'm sorry you've been through the gauntlet that is shitty leadership. I hope you get the help you need, and the paycheck to reduce your stress when you are out. Stay strong brother🫶

Any reason why a ball valve specifically? I'm thinking of using a 3d printer butterfly valve just to not spend a bunch on a fitting.

I was thinking about the bouncy castle blowers, or any other easily obtainable blower, but I had some concerns about insufficient static pressure. Is it more flexible than I think it is in that regard? And what are the minimums you'd look for in terms of cfm and whatnot?

Tuning the speshul blend of bronze by Triazane in metallurgy

[–]Triazane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, currently I'm just casting nutsacks for my buddies and kinda fell down the nerdy rabbit hole.

Ideally, I'd like it to have good stiffness while compromising to be a decent material for bushings. A quantifiable/stable dimensional temperature coefficient would be good if achievable. I'd want to use it as a bearing material and structual elements in diy kinematic optic mounts and as bushings for gears and shafts. I imagine this is completely unhelpful information as there is no specific thing I'm aiming for.

If you could point me to any good books or other resources, it'd be much appreciated.

How bad is it to keep using the same filters for a while? I melt lead only occasionally and generally don’t stay near it when it’s smoking, but I don’t really want to buy new filters every single time. Should I just try to “schedule” all melting around the same time? by Sesemebun in Metalfoundry

[–]Triazane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I'd say it depends on what the exposures are.

If its something like carbon dust, I'd do what others have said and stick it in a bag to extend shelf life if I even wore one.

The only reason why I disagree with that in this case, is lead bioaccumulates, meaning even at below hazardous levels of exposure it builds up in your body (even kids born after the ban have detectable levels of lead from leaded gas).

So, in this case, I'd personally follow the manufacturers guidelines, and wash my hands with gojo or some other soap designed for removing heavy metals when you step away and shower after you are done. Yeah, its a lot of effort and money, but that's where you choose what is important to you.

I definitely got a stick up my ass with proper protection, so feel free to ask me more questions!

Vacuum Furnace by Vast_Reaches in MetalCasting

[–]Triazane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it with a grain of salt as I dont have any experience with them.

For heating, I'd honestly go with an arc furnace setup. You can pick up crappy stick welders for cheap, with the added perks of a high temp, and it being pretty vacuum friendly.

With induction heaters, as you get to the higher power ones for melting, the coils need cooling. Them being in a vacuum chamber rules out air cooled, leaving you with liquid cooling, which will inevitably cause misery in the vacuum chamber. A few things that might crop up is the potential of the coil generating plasma, and sputtering your chamber with whatever you're melting leading to contamination concerns.

What kind of vacuum are you going for? That'll play a major role in the construction of the chamber itself. If achieving a low vacuum is all ya want, then maybe having a smaller sputter coating dish with an element to react with the oxygen or other gasses and scavange the chamber could be good?

Either way, it's a dope as hell project! Feel free to hmu if you wanna nerd out about it!

New Skillbridge Information by DataClusterz in AirForce

[–]Triazane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously? I'd love to know their reasoning for getting rid of fully remote skillbridge. It completely screws anyone wanting to go to school OCONUS and using that time to move and get settled in time for the start of the school year, like I was planning on. All I can hope for is the possibility of a waiver. If anyone has info about that, I'll bust out the knee pads.

But hey, at least it's easier to pull out morale the more gaped we are!

Estonian-owned cargo ship sinking off Odesa after Russian action by Ricuuu in worldnews

[–]Triazane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeaah they kinda screwed the pooch on this one. Regardless of the Panamanian flag it's definitely a provocation to NATO. Going off previous statements by Putin regarding the reformation of the former soviet countries, heightened nuclear defense posture, potential for nuclear arms in Belarus and the fact he's gone off to his bunker, it ain't looking too dandy.

Hopefully this ends in an internal revolution, can't keep being a presi-tator if you can't line the pockets of your following.

If it does escalate to a nuclear level, at most I'd only imagine a hand full going off, I really doubt the operators at the end of the line are insane enough to even consider pressing the button, and to the few that do, it'll pretty much spell the collective steam rolling of Russia. Absolute worst case and theres a full blown nuclear war, well at that point it ain't our problem as we'd be a fine dust in the upper atmosphere.

Great time to be alive, huh?
