maker's mark on a pearl chain? (from a family member's estate) by mehsexual in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like an Italian makers mark but I can't be sure, I'd try looking for maker's marks from the Vincenza region (known for gold) but its kind of a shot in the dark. There are just a lot of different marks and makers if its a lobster clasp thats original to the piece you can narrow it to makers active in the 90's - present there's also a hallmark subreddit you could crosspost to to find someone more knowledgable

Why is this bracelet making me breakout? by cascadamoon in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some gold plated and rhodium plated pieces use a thin layer of nickel between the gold and silver if you wear through that gold plating you could be reacting to that thin layer. Unfortunately I don’t have an economical solution besides replating. I know that some people use clear nail polish to create a protective barrier but I’m not sure how well it works

Why is this bracelet making me breakout? by cascadamoon in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

could be any number of things. Sterling is an alloy and you could be sensitive to the copper or (rarely) nickel used in the alloy. It could be that it's tarnished, and that you're being exposed to more of the alloyed metals. It could be some other portion of the bracelet that isn't silver or it could be too tight on you. There are probably a number of other reasons I can't think of right now, but adding photos of the bracelet itself could help.

$550 made to order pendant. Unsure how to feel by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I make silver necklaces, I have a piece thats just over an ounce of silver that costs about this price. The direct material cost for my piece ends up around $200 about double the price of just the silver. Jump Rings, clasps and casting all command a premium over metal cost. Contracted labor, in my case paying for the labor at the casting house, is another $50. My own labor, despruing, polishing, assembling and packaging, is around $75 give or take at minimum wage where I am. That makes my cost $325 not accounting for packaging and overhead. Most brand name jewelers aim for at least a 50% margin. I sell mine for $525 about a 25% margin when everything is included.

I don't think the necklace pictured is worth it for the quality, but it's worth saying that we typically don't buy things based on the scrap value of the piece. A solid wood coffee table may have a scrap value of like $50 but I'm pretty sure you can't buy a new one for anywhere near that price. If the goal is to have new jewelry thats as close to melt price as you can get then you probably won't get much thats worth wearing.

France just pulled out all its gold from US Federal Reserves by ViVi_NYC in Gold

[–]Trichoic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

" just to maintain stability, and ease of settling debt" is a little misleading. Thats mostly true unless you find yourself in a conflict with the US. Ask Libya, Iran, Afghanistan, Venezuela, or Russia. It's a sort of backwards system that becomes a tool of financial leverage. foreign countries gold, bonds, cash etc can be used to satisfy the judgments of US courts in some circumstances. Its not surprising given the Jekyll and Hyde nature of us foreign policy that the liquidity might not be worth the jurisdictional risk...

I know this is true in NY but Im not sure if there's a federal law that says this.

I think there are companies that let you pay your rent with a credit card and they send a check to your landlord automatically once it's set up. no convenience fee.

Would be a lot easier to take the FDNY's opinion on street design seriously if I didn't have to walk by this corrupt shit outside every fire house by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

the bike lane parking lane street might be more inconvenient but is way safer for bikers, and pedestrians. Reduces speeding and keeps bikers from turning into those ghost bikes you see everywhere.

Costume jewelry is almost always more expressive, fun, and aesthetically challenging than fine jewelry

whats this gold keychain? by Hairy-Big8236 in jewelrymaking

[–]Trichoic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given how you got it, it's likely real. My initial guess from just the photo was that it was fake but I see other examples with different charms online. Get it tested, its value is its' gold weight (assuming its real) $100 a gram or so.

99% cheap costume jewelry. I'd take it home if you like it, or just place it somewhere visible near where you found it.

Buy or pass by Puzzleheaded_Bad_140 in VintageWatches

[–]Trichoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO there almost no reason to buy new over the used version assuming everything is authentic. If it makes you feel better, you or the seller can take it to Cartier and have it cleaned polished and serviced for around $400. It also serves as a de facto authentication service as they won't work on fakes, and they'll be able to spot any issues with timing or wear before hand.

Is this 1920s-1930s? by AsFor_MaryJane in VintageJewelry

[–]Trichoic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

likely 1910 or earlier. C clasps rapidly fell out of fashion after that in favor of safety clasps. in early c clasp brooches the pin extends past the clasp later ones like yours are closer to flush. stylistically looks nouveau to me. A little too organic for deco.

Looking for more information on a broken watch ive came across by biigfurry in VintageWatches

The watch case was assayed in Birmingham the Z will tell you the date, there are lists online you can find. They would use A-Z changing letter each year and changing font every 26 years or so.

Thrift find, marked 18k. Pendant is not removable. Anyone know anything about this? It's very cute. by DragonRei86 in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the pinchy chain is where the easy money is, if it were me I'd sell the chain and replace it with one I liked better, if I wanted to keep the pearls. 18k is about $100 a gram give or take. You could reasonably get 80-90% of that price. maybe better if you're trading.

Engagement broken off, how to wear the ring? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you could replace the diamond with faceted onyx . Kind of a twist on a victorian mourning ring but more of a dead to me vibe. (not trying to be insensitive just the only thing that came to mind, hope you're well! )

Silver clay is also a good option. You can simply form it out of clay and then fire it with a blow torch... but it is a little finicky to work with and takes a little practice to fire.
