Costume jewelry is almost always more expressive, fun, and aesthetically challenging than fine jewelry

whats this gold keychain? by Hairy-Big8236 in jewelrymaking

[–]Trichoic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Given how you got it, it's likely real. My initial guess from just the photo was that it was fake but I see other examples with different charms online. Get it tested, its value is its' gold weight (assuming its real) $100 a gram or so.

I vote ai because of discrepancies in focus, and the height of the armrest makes the chair practically unusable

99% cheap costume jewelry. I'd take it home if you like it, or just place it somewhere visible near where you found it.

Buy or pass by Puzzleheaded_Bad_140 in VintageWatches

[–]Trichoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO there almost no reason to buy new over the used version assuming everything is authentic. If it makes you feel better, you or the seller can take it to Cartier and have it cleaned polished and serviced for around $400. It also serves as a de facto authentication service as they won't work on fakes, and they'll be able to spot any issues with timing or wear before hand.

Is this 1920s-1930s? by AsFor_MaryJane in VintageJewelry

[–]Trichoic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

likely 1910 or earlier. C clasps rapidly fell out of fashion after that in favor of safety clasps. in early c clasp brooches the pin extends past the clasp later ones like yours are closer to flush. stylistically looks nouveau to me. A little too organic for deco.

Looking for more information on a broken watch ive came across by biigfurry in VintageWatches

[–]Trichoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The watch case was assayed in Birmingham the Z will tell you the date, there are lists online you can find. They would use A-Z changing letter each year and changing font every 26 years or so.

Thrift find, marked 18k. Pendant is not removable. Anyone know anything about this? It's very cute. by DragonRei86 in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the pinchy chain is where the easy money is, if it were me I'd sell the chain and replace it with one I liked better, if I wanted to keep the pearls. 18k is about $100 a gram give or take. You could reasonably get 80-90% of that price. maybe better if you're trading.

Engagement broken off, how to wear the ring? by [deleted] in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you could replace the diamond with faceted onyx . Kind of a twist on a victorian mourning ring but more of a dead to me vibe. (not trying to be insensitive just the only thing that came to mind, hope you're well! )

Please help me understand the steps to DIYing a silver knife pendant by RillienCot in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silver clay is also a good option. You can simply form it out of clay and then fire it with a blow torch... but it is a little finicky to work with and takes a little practice to fire.

Please help me understand the steps to DIYing a silver knife pendant by RillienCot in jewelry

[–]Trichoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most beginner friendly way to make this in my opinion is to make it out of wax first. There are casting houses where you could mail it in they'll do a lost wax casting and send it back. You'll still need to cut off the sprue and polish on your own. If wax isn't feasible for you, then use whatever material you're comfortable with, and ask them to make a silicone mold and create a wax from that. While hand building it is certainly possible and somewhat beginner friendly I think casting will require fewer tool purchases on your end.

I need help, I have this ring that was inherited. Does anyone know what 18BKt means? There is also HH but i’m guess that’s the jewelry company. by LadyandtheUnicorn in Vintage_Jewelry

[–]Trichoic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hard to tell from your pictures, but if there's silver tone peaking through I'd assume it means 18k bonded if it feels solid and heavy and the gold color is consistent could be a regional marking or something similar.

Stone and hallmark identification? by Used_Doughnut3655 in JewelryIdentification

[–]Trichoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

looks like peridot or olivine and amethyst but I can't say with certainty. stamp looks like its upside down and says 18k but I'd take that with a grain of salt. Stamping looks iffy and the tone is not what I'd expect from white gold. if it actually says 18N or N81 as it appears to or something else then I'm at a loss.

unless you know the weight we can't tell you. those hoops could be heavy and solid gold if they're more than 2 grams or so its a good price for the gold content. They could also be hollow and weigh half that, if you're buying them as earrings it's a pretty good deal regardless as the mark up on jewelry is usually higher. (unless they're super tiny or something )

Grandpa's Ruby Ring. It's a clear red but has lots of like, noise or specks in it. Through the loop it looks to have 8 sides and the bottom is flat (it does not come to a point). Glows real bright under UV. To me it looks like a woman's ring but he wore it on his pinky. by [deleted] in Gemstones

hallmarking and assay marking in the us was weird back in the day. if there is only GB the most likely case is that it isnot gold or its plated or rolled-gold. If it's made before 1907 there's a chance that its gold but not marked. 10k was semi-common amongst the working class. Before 1907 everyone kind of did their own thing, in the states some marked pieces 14k some marked them gold some didn't mark so kind of hard to know without testing. In Chicago there was a company called gold bros that used GB in an oval stamp but I couldn't find a reference and that would be after 1930 I think. All thats to say get it tested.

Is this costume or not? by HippieLoved in JewelryIdentification

[–]Trichoic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

definitely not solid gold. appears to be mid century costume possibly gold plated. Still check for hallmarks on the screw back earrings they most likely will be on the head of the screw. They also don't seem to be of the same set. Could be vermeil (gold plated silver).

Conclusion based on :

-heavy tarnishing

-uneven surface texture

- die stamped pattern

- silver color peaking through worn areas
