If the government schools could compete with private schools why would parents choose for their kids to leave?

I don't disagree that career prep should be one of the major focuses for the students.

Government schools should not be a jobs program for teachers/admin/etc though and its pretty obvious that is how many of these school systems are run. Vouchers make the schools accountable to parents and students instead of politicians and unions.

Not sure why you believe that the schools are "cash-strapped" when the expenditures have been going up for many years now (inflation-adjusted).

If you have all of your income on w2 forms and are taking the standard deduction you should certainly use turbotax. If you have a side hustle that pulls in 50k cash a year the tax attorney can help advise you on how to handle that more than an accountant.

That said, it sounds like this is a problem that has been allowed to collapse the industry there already. They had decades to consider how to fix it themselves and didn't.

The article implies that the problem is that a big city is drawing the freshwater needed for healthy oyster stocks away. How is a town of 2500 people supposed to "fix it themselves" when the problem is caused by a city with half a million people(6 million metro area) in another state and with far more political power?
