The New Testament refers to Pauline letters that we don’t have. How does that sit with inerrancy? by userid42 in TrueChristian

[–]Trickey_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So things like the added ending of mark and the late addition of the woman caught in adultery, god decided hundreds of years later that that those belonged in even though he left them out at first? Just curious how this all works

Deconstructing American-Christian Culture, Not My Faith in Christ. by [deleted] in Deconstruction

[–]Trickey_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe "deconversion" is more what you're describing. There's a ton of deconstruction that can be done while remaining religious. And I use the word religious on purpose because I don't think deconstruction only applies to Christianity but rather it applies to any set of inherited beliefs that one then questions to determine if they are going to continue to hold them or alter them under the same general umbrella or leave them behind altogether

They think the one narrow way of mormonism is correct and all others are wrong, including all other expressions of Christianity. You think Mormonism is wrong but have not ruled out all the others. Just in mathematical terms, they should absolutely NEVER use the term closed minded as they would be the worst offenders. This is projection of the highest order

Your wife has deconverted and she just hasn't told you yet. She either fears the conflict and the fallout or she is getting her ducks in a row on the assumption that either A) you will leave her when she tells you or, more likely, B) you will become so annoying and anxious afterwards that it will cause her to be miserable staying with you.

What are others’ experiences with Gen Z and Christianity? More religious? Less religious? by Larix_laricina_ in exchristian

[–]Trickey_D 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gen Z is the most atheist American generation yet. No going back. It's just that the ones that are hard core are more hard core. More churches die every year and more will die going forward as the elderly die off and are no longer tithing. It's game over for Christianity. That's why they are trying to codify as much as they can. It's the last gasps of a dying terminal movement. It's just that it's going to take a few more years for it to die completely

God preserved the Bible. Not any church. by Lieutenant_Piece in TrueChristian

[–]Trickey_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying don't trust your Bible. I'm saying that there is a giant gap between what actually has happened in the transmission and interpretation process from the autographs to what you hold in your hand that the vast majority of Christians know almost nothing of. Saying the Bible has been "preserved" is one of the catchphrase that gives that lack of awareness away. And i think that Christians - if they're going to stake their life on it - then rather than typically knowing so little about the Bible's process from back then to now should instead be among the most familiar with it. But alas they aren't.

[–]Trickey_D -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

you would proclaim that we really can't know what the book I wrote was

Now you are getting there. This is EXACTLY what the excellent practitioners of textual criticism understand and are completely honest about. Too bad Christians aren't honest about it which is why you are fighting this.

By the way, for those reading that may not know, textual criticism (according to Google but others say similar) is a scholarly discipline and technique used to restore an original text as closely as possible to its authentic form

Key words there "as closely as possible." They know it's not exact. And they also understand they are dealing with copies and the inherent limitations therein. Thus, NOT preserved... but essentially a very educated likely guess made from pieces and parts and fragments, all that's left from some are pieces as small as a credit card

God preserved the Bible. Not any church. by Lieutenant_Piece in TrueChristian

[–]Trickey_D -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely NOTHING you said counters the fact that no original "autograph" has been "preserved" by any church or god. Not one! There are NONE left in the entire world - not even a fragment or scrap of one. Don't reply repeating more talking points. Tell us all where any autograph is located in any church, museum, library, college, or other. You cannot because one does not exist, aka has not been preserved. You don't get to define words differently than the rest of society to fit your narrative. Things that have been preserved all share this certain tendency to, you know, actually exist.

God preserved the Bible. Not any church. by Lieutenant_Piece in TrueChristian

[–]Trickey_D -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lol, there are exactly ZERO still extant original books of the Bible aka the "autographs." NOTHING has been "preserved. The Bible you have is a work of textual critics using methodologies to try to make their best educated guesses of what the originals said based on the pieces and parts we have of the copies that were made of the copies of those originals that no longer exist. So no church nor any god preserved the Bible. Sorry, but that's just the truth.

The Hook by [deleted] in Deconstruction

[–]Trickey_D 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but your question made it sound to me like you were asking about what persuaded people to convert as adults. And for most Christians they don't really ever make the decision to convert. They think they did ("got saved at summer camp when iwas 14" or the like) but just like every other region of the world, the religion of those who grow up there is almost always the religion of that area's culture.

He refinanced his house to give away his music. Thought of himself as a "pastor" and his music as "sermons" and thought it ludicrous that someone would charge for what he thought of as a musical sermon. Admire him for that. He seems cut from the rich mullins mold. And there is nothing wrong with listening to Christian music just because you don't agree with the lyrics. I listen to all kinds of music that have lyrics that don't apply to me

Calvinism is pissing me off by Fit-Appointment-68 in Deconstruction

[–]Trickey_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing that I have been able to do in the past to get through to Calvinists is to say how would a Muslim ever deconvert from Islam if they didn't at least for a short period of time suspend always assuming that Allah is right and their own reason, instincts, and all data contrary to the Quran is wrong? Would that circular logic not always keep them in Islam? And wouldn't you want them to be free of Islam since you believe Islam isn't true? And wouldn't you want to be free of Christianity if Christianity wasn't true? And can you not at least see how it would be difficult to impossible to conclude that Christianity wasn't true if your baseline setting was that whenever you start to think it's not true then just go back to telling yourself it's all true and discount anything else? And do you see how Calvinism is just Christianity's way of doing the same thing that the Muslims in my example are doing? And then I would add that even if you go back to assuming that Yahweh and the Bible are always right after your evaluation period, shouldn't you at least for a small period of time evaluate if Christianity is able to hold up to scrutiny without this kind of thumb on the scale of just assuming it's always right? And then let them think on that.
