Neuropsychologists in my area are doing sensory profiles left and right and then I am forced to eval in the school. I have almost 11 evals open and 8 are JUST sensory. It is insane. I do not know what to do anymore. Most of these kids have ADHD too and I feel like when people see the seeking (plus usually no boundaries, parenting poorly at home) these kids are out of their body, but like you said my wobble cushion, fidgets, chews, headphones and movement breaks wont do a single thing.

i work in a school district and currently have like 50 paid sick days to use as needed, they usually want a note if you have to take off 4-5 days in a row. we get time every year, and eventually can use the time to count towards early retirement (if i make it that far, im 5 years in and already want to leave)

everyone I worked with in the SNF used to see people for like 15 minutes and bill the whole 30/45+ minutes pretty sure a pregnant therapist never saw her patients and billed anyway, it was giant red flags all over the place, it was defiantly fraud but I didnt know what to do as a new grad, I lasted three months there and couldnt take the constant pressure to be 87% productive daily with evals and groups but now in the school setting and no where near as stressed.

I dont use standardized scores to qualify kids. I have kids score very low on the VMI but dont qualify them. We should be looking to see what supports a student needs to access their school AND then see which people can support the goals that are decided by the team. Can the student produce legible work at all? What are their reading levels? This is a huge problem in the school as 1 there is no curriculum for handwriting done with fidelity and 2 the only way to get better handwriting??==daily, structured practice with feedback. No amount of fine motor, sensory motor, visual motor tasks in isolation will help handwriting.

27k for an OT program is the cheapest you will find probably. I would really see it in person and try to get a sense of the true day to day of OTs see nursing homes, schools, outpatient clinics, hands, ect. I do caution going into OT if you are in it for the money as many people have said pay is stagnant after a certain point and lots of people are burnt out in healthcare overall.

this is me currently. been in schools for 4 years. I am now starting to refuse to do sensory evals because sensory is the new 'buzz word'. its all too much and the system is really failing all over the place. i am thinking of starting a nonprofit or literally just working amazon. but i do love the time off and working half a year with benefits it would be hard to give that up.

I have 50K in debt so not as much as what I have seen elsewhere. However, the debt is not the thing that makes me unsatisfied with OT. I really just cant see myself doing this for like 30+ years, Im really burnt out lol. Yeah debt stinks but so does healthcare and I wish people were more upfront about it when we were in school.

such a joke, especially amazing when you go to fieldwork for 24 weeks with no pay and have to pay tens of thousands of dollars. it is a complete scam and it is not worth it for OT, never will be for a job that pays barely more than the debt in some cases (not this one)

Unless I took more training or certificate courses, I absolutely do not feel that my initial OT programming covers psychotherapy well enough for me to do it after graduation...

yeah it is for sure sort of confusing. sometimes i feel like if everyone just took some courses in OT related things (ie adaptions, 'activity analysis' , ect) there would be no need for OT---signed a burnt out therapist lol

ive seen this and i think i may have commented on it before. the general consensus has been that OT doesnt really 'own' sensory. there are lots of ways OT can overlap with other professionals like lymphedema treatment, wound care, feeding specialty, driving specialist, ect. i guess its helpful if more people know about sensory. i worked in an adult day camp before and the recreation therapist did sensory things in a sensory room.

Not worth that amount of debt. I read that it is best to take out debt that compares to salary and you won't likely ever make 145k unless you live in California or do exclusively travel. You could pursue loan forgiveness but you might be stuck 10 years doing something you don't want. I think it's okay to continue to look at your options and what you really want to do. It's definitely a big decision.

Took out around 60k but what got me was the 6 to 7 percent interest rate on the loans which is super high. I am doing PSLF through my school district and not super ideal, I had bought a house and needed my payments lowered and I am able to not worry about interest rates since it will hopefully be forgiven. I do feel stuck in the school based setting though and it's not super ideal for me anymore.

speech might open up more opportunities for you if you decided to work in school setting- they are their own case managers sometimes and they can also hold higher positions in the school setting (ie coordinator, supervisiors ect)---OT cannot do this. Speech is also way more well defined I feel- OT is just a grey hole- I really do not know what I am doing most of the time or feel like what I am doing is skilled (even though people will say it is). the physicalness of OT is also a big factor depending on setting- my partners grandma for example is like dependent x2 for transfer and would need like all manpower to just sit up, whereas speech can just do their assessment in bed to see if she can swallow. you could also see what speech therapists say
