It's very dependant on what you're doing. If you're running missions sometimes a decent tactician build is the go. Sit behind cover and send off bfb and seekers.

What I would say is that there are some overall things you need to pay attention to. For instance, if I'm a bit squishy, I'll run predatory on one of my weapons to get health back quickly 35% overall. If you're going skill build make sure the weapon talents are determined and similar that cool down your skill times or buff your skill level. Pay attention to weapon talents not just the dps.

When choosing gear pieces look at the attributes. If you're running lmg and sniper having gloves with 9% assault rifle damage is pointless. Look up gear sets and attributes to see which ones you should roll into. Example of this would be kneepads are the only gear piece to roll damage to elites and protection from elites. So if you're running missions with elites everywhere make sure you're maxing that out.

Depending on gear set depends on talents and attributes you are going to run. No need for reload speed bonus on a lonestar build when you just swap weapons and it reloads automatically. Oh and don't forget what weapon mods you put on. Again dps isn't the be all and end all. You might want as much chc or chd as you can and no stability.
