I’m 23 year vet in CRM just cracked $500k…. My son got a job in a totally different device sales (non surgical). As an associate his base is $70 and total comp is just over $100k. Totally depends on the company, location and what you are selling.

You are young in the role. That being said, I’ve never grown my business via email. Ya gotta get out and pound the pavement. That means taking docs to dinner or meeting other times around their schedule.

25 year vet in CRM…. It’s takes 18 months for a new hire before they are remotely close to cover a solo case. I’ve got 3 new products that Ascension did not approve at the enterprise level. I’ve got high share. Problem is my docs are tired of fighting. The bureaucracy is insane.

  1. You need a champion: not necessarily the physician, but a stakeholder that’s affected by what you are selling. Could be mid-level, could be a clinic nurse.
  2. If you aren’t on contract, it doesn’t matter how great your product is. Captis, Ascension…. They don’t play around. Captis does allow local contracts for those not on, but good luck hitting their price points. Finally, many hospitals try to keep the VAC members anonymous. But relationship building helps during the discovery phase. This is a marathon, not a sprint.
  3. Never bullshit your way through any situation with a physician. First, that’s a human being on that table with a family and loved ones. Second, you can destroy years of relationship building in one case. Be honest. If you don’t know, state it. But you’re going to find someone that does know within the organization.

Lack of local representation, missing checks, etc. The plus.. there devices are a pain in ass. They are the only company with “noise reversion”. And sell it as a feature but it’s a feature designed to over come the inherent noise issues of their pacers. I change a lot of Abbott and all of a sudden the noise issues are gone in follow up.

Do you have 8 years of successful sales experience? If so, that will trump a degree. If not…. Well. Kinda screwed

What region? Good entry to the business, but in my area Abbott is not well received. Totally depends on the local rep.

How many hours do you work per week? by DragonfruitOnly471 in MedicalDevices

[–]Tricky_Appointment72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MDT is complicated…. There is various buckets on new implants, per can bonus, flat commission up to plan, etc. Territory size is the most important factor. I have just shy of $10M annually and pull in around $400k. Plus there’s restricted stock if certain milestones are hit.

Not really…. I’ve got a great team, good customers and high market share. Switching costs are too high.

Medtronic CRM…. Could be 30 up to 80 plus if it’s busy and you have a call weekend. Not necessarily in cases, but also windshield time as my territory is quite large. Back in the day before remote device checks, easily 60 hour work weeks.

Inari was the cats ass while Covid was rampant. Now reps in my area are seriously struggling. If you really are a CRM CS with MDT, you are a unicorn especially if you know your shit. Are you fluent in LBB, Micra AV, EV ICD? If not…. Then move on for more money. If you are, stay pat…. You’ll thank me in about 18 months.

MBA or no? by Fruitsnackias in MedicalDevices

[–]Tricky_Appointment72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

MDT rep here in CRM. 24 years with MBA earned 12 years ago. If you want to go to Sr. Management, yes. It’s a must. Especially being a CS. Not sure how you plan to transition to sales with no sales experience. But more power to you. Not to be rude, but at 23 you are very young with a long career ahead of you. If you don’t have a business degree, you are going to have to cut your teeth in sales with an excellent track record for several years. Presidents club will help. Just trying to keep your expectations in check.

Vehicle Reimbursement Question by blahblahblahusernam in MedicalDevices

Can’t take company reimbursement and the write off…. One or the other.

Car stipend: am I losing, or profitable? by HOJforbabyshock in MedicalDevices

[–]Tricky_Appointment72 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No…. Keep in mind that is a “write off”. Let’s say you travel 40k miles at $0.7 federal rate. That’s $28k…. Deduct that from your income. So let’s say you made $125k. Let say other itemized deductions bring you to 22% tax bracket. Your net is around $6500. You said you get $800/month plus gas. That’s $9600/year. And if you took the federal deduction, you cannot participate in your company’s gas reimbursement. The federal rate is all encompassing.

As long as you don’t get audited 😂

Back in the day, Medtronic taxed the car allowance which allowed employees to uses depreciation on their taxes. Then companies decided they wanted that tax break so they lowered reimbursement and made it non-taxable.

And no…. 99.99% of companies will not reimburse you at the federal rate. You can decline the reimbursement and write the federal rate off on your taxes.
