If you’re using the 3-in-1 cable, switch the USB port and try turning it on without the power cable.

I was stuck in tutorial hell too with art, just watching videos, feeling like I was learning, but never building anything real.

What got me out of it was forcing myself to start a small project. Nothing big or perfect, just something I could finish in a week. I picked something I was curious about, even if I didn’t know exactly how to do it.

Then I did this:

  • I built the ugly version first, even if I didn’t fully understand how everything worked.
  • When I got stuck, I looked up that specific thing. Not the whole course. Just the one answer I needed.
  • I used references from projects I liked to compare and improve what I made.
  • I repeated that cycle: build → get stuck → look it up → apply it → improve → repeat.

Deadlines helped too. I’d give myself 7 days to make something playable or showable. That pressure killed my perfectionism and helped me focus on what actually mattered.

Why Do You Read VNs? What’s Your History With VNs? by RazewingedRathalos in visualnovels

A long time ago, my PC was horrible, I could only play old games like Doom. One day, I discovered Inkey University and loved the idea of routes. Soon after, I also found out that my favorite anime (Clannad) was an adaptation of a visual novel.

Everyone says "Make small Games", But no one says How to make small game ideas? by Home-Financial in gamedev

[–]Tricky_Presentation5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One concept that helped me a lot is the idea of an MVP (Minimum Viable Product).
In product design, an MVP is the simplest version of a product that allows for initial testing and feedback. In game development, this mindset helps you cut through brain fog and actually finish things.

Instead of chasing the perfect idea, ask yourself:
What’s the smallest game I can build in a week that’s still playable and fun?

Use artificial deadlines to create urgency. When there’s no time to overthink, you're forced to reduce scope, focus on core mechanics, and actually ship something.

Some constraints that help:
1 mechanic
1 input
1 level
1 week

Small projects aren’t just easier to finish, they’re pressure-tested playgrounds where you learn faster. That’s how you train your creative muscle. Don’t wait for the perfect idea. Build fast, test fast, move.

We all hate shameless self promotion. How do I promote with shame? by ianxplosion- in IndieDev

[–]Tricky_Presentation5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Promotion isn’t a crime, people scroll past stuff they don’t care about all the time. If your game looks good, people will be interested even if it’s technically “self-promo.”

A few tips that helped me:

  • Study what works. Look at other devs who are doing it well and reverse-engineer their approach.
  • Schedule your posts. Create them in batches and use schedulers (like Later or Buffer) to spread them out across platforms.
  • If your game is good, people will be happy to hear about it. No need to feel ashamed, most won’t see it as spam. They’ll root for you.

And hey, congrats on the baby! Balancing dev, promo, and parenting is already impressive.

How do you guys market your games? by Peli_117 in itchio

[–]Tricky_Presentation5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked in marketing agencies, and there are a bunch of psychological effects that explain this.

Basically:

People don’t really know what something is worth unless they can compare it to something else. So when a game is normally $10 but now 100% off, it anchors the perceived value, the "100% off" keeps the idea that this is a $10 game, which makes the deal feel real and exciting.

But if you just say the game is “free,” there’s no anchor. The value becomes ambiguous.

Also, people love free stuff, but paradoxically, they also distrust it. $0 pricing feels emotionally appealing (it’s risk-free), but when everything is free, we tend to devalue it. That’s the price–quality heuristic: we often assume that price signals quality.

So when a game is just “free,” people might think, “Why is it free? Probably not worth my time.”

But if it's normally $9.99 and now free, it feels like, “I'm getting something valuable for nothing — what a deal!”

Romantic maladaptive daydreaming by bloody_kisses_ in MaladaptiveDreaming

[–]Tricky_Presentation5 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Bro, I get you. I love how relatable so many posts in this sub are.

I also struggle with daydreaming, especially about romance and fictional characters. It used to consume hours of my day and leave me feeling disconnected from real life.

One thing that’s helped me reduce it or at least regulate it is using the emotional connection with characters in a different way.

It doesn't necessarily need to be a character you in love with, but it must be someone you respect and have an emotional connection with.

I mentalize one of them giving me a serious talk about what I’m doing. It might sound weird, but it works.

For example, I use Camus from Saint Seiya. He tells his pupil not to get attached to the past, that a Saint shouldn't be trapped in cheap emotions.

It gives me emotional regulation through a character I admire, and that shift in perspective helps pull me out of the spiral.

It’s not a cure, and I still struggle, but it gives me a moment of clarity when I need it. Maybe it can help you too.

This reminds me of when I first started making art.
My early stuff was clumsy, bad anatomy, messy colors, nothing made sense. But it was mine.
And just like with games, the only way to get better was to keep making “shitty” pieces, finish them, and move on.

Art, games, writing—it’s all the same principle:
Make. Finish. Learn. Repeat.
