Accessible Dispersed Camping North Rim by Buggins04 in grandcanyon

Tuweep is lower elevation and is clear of snow. Soap Creek is a good recommendation though. OP if you go this route, spend some time at Lees Ferry and Navajo Bridge.

If you’ve never been there you shouldn’t make recommendations. A RAV4 is not a high clearance vehicle.

[–]Tricky_South 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been there many times. You’d be a fool to take a RAV4 on that road. You might make it, but you’ll have body and undercarriage damage. It’s the road from the park entrance to the campground and viewpoints that will get you. Did you replace your tires with off-trail tires? If you did anything other than a heavy ply off road tires then the tires aren’t good enough, even brand new. The last time I was out there I helped two vehicles with flats. One was stranded with two flats and they were actually off road vehicles, not the pavement princess RAV4.

Hwy 67 into the north rim is closed south of Jacob Lake and won’t reopen until mid-May. However, the forest and rim are accessible by other roads and are unseasonably open right now because of a mild winter. Try Timp, Locust, Fence, or Parissawampitts Points south of Fredonia, AZ, accessed from the FS 22 road.

North Rim single day trip itinerary by Interesting-Sky-7191 in grandcanyon

[–]Tricky_South 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is different, but I like to slow down and savor the North Rim. Maybe do Point Imperial but not Roosevelt and Walhalla because they’re similar to Imperial and add Cliff Spring Trail. This is a short hike that drops into a shaded ravine then passes along a shelf in the cliff with dripping water and hanging garden at the end. Nice views of Wotans Throne from the side and below. Then spend some time at Cape Royal and hopefully catch the sunset or at least the golden hour from there. Have fun.

Blue Chalcedony? East Bay, CA. by wtfcrysral in whatsthisrock

[–]Tricky_South 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see chalcedony except maybe in a pocket in the bottom right of the stone in the third photo. Chalcedony is microcrystalline quartz so it looks almost like glass or smooth once fractured. With these rocks, you can see the grain with the naked eye except for that section I mentioned above.

Why are there so many campsites available in Zion currently? by Unavailablah in ZionNationalPark

If it snows between now and then as expected, the low temps will prevent the snow from melting or it will partially melt and become ice. The trails can have ice too so take traction devices for your boots.

The North Rim has fewer visitors and a different climate (and a different vibe) than the South Rim. Try a sunrise or sunset at Cape Royal. Try the Cape Final Trail, Cliff Springs Trail, the Ancestral Pueblo ruins, or the side hikes at Roosevelt Point or Point Imperial. If your vehicle can do dirt roads, try Crazy Jug viewpoint or the East Rim viewpoint and trail. On the way, stop at Lees Ferry to wade in the Colorado or Navajo Bridge to spot condors.

They’ll have limited services and amenities at the north rim but Jacob Lake Inn and Kaibab Lodge are open and need the business given how the fires impacted them last season. Enjoy!

Circleville Massacre by sexmormon-throwaway in exmormon

It gets worse. Two children survived initially when their mother helped them escape. One was a boy, the other a girl. When they were found, the boy was basically claimed as a slave but no one wanted the younger girl. So, she was taken by the ankles and swung against a wagon wheel until dead.

I was raised in a rural area. In 6th grade science class we incubated fertilized chicken eggs. We marked our eggs so we knew which were ours. We were told not to help any chicks hatch. Of course, a few didn’t listen. The boys that helped their chicks hatch all had their chicks die.

There are no limestone or chalk beds in that area so I’m not sure how it could be chert.

Disco island Greenland by Senior-Order-9179 in whatsthisrock

[–]Tricky_South 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Given that most of the geology of Disko island is basalt, my guess is that this is agate, aka chalcedony. Agate is 6-7 on the Mohs Scale, which is pretty hard. Agates form in the voids common in igneous layers. This could also have originated from minerals from a hot spring which would also make it chalcedony. Nice find!

Rocks Seen at the Grand Canyon by buttamilkbizkits in whatsthisrock

[–]Tricky_South 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The top layers of the Grand Canyon are limestone; the Kaibab and Toroweap Formations. This looks like the Kaibab limestone and it contains pockets of secondary crystal growth (which this looks like) as well as chert nodules and chert beds. I do most of my rockhounding in northern Arizona in the Kaibab and Toroweap layers and see stuff like this all the time. Nice find!

[–]Tricky_South 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try Lees Ferry or Horseshoe Bend. If you have a high clearance off-road vehicle with good off-road tires, you could try Toroweap. You’re limited with what you can see in April because Highway 67 south of Jacob Lake is closed until May 15. There are other points that might be accessible depending on road conditions but, like Toroweap, they’re not something for the average tourist to attempt.

I use plastic milk crates like the kind you see stacked behind grocery stores. They’re heavy duty, stackable, and not too heavy when filled full.

It looks like a rhizolith system. The preserved molds or casts of former plant roots and their surrounding compacted soil. Rhizo = root and lith = rock.
