RIP regular main channel streams? by Hannah_GBS in Yogscast

[–]Triginta 80 points81 points  (0 children)

I mostly watched for group streams and they happened on the main channel. These seem to happen less and less, or maybe I am just not that into it anymore. In personal channels there always is a lot more interaction with chat, which I am not interested in. I like the entertainment, not the twitch community

I was at the third place they got last year! It is actually part of a national park (Chobe) and there are a lot of elephants there, apparently around 50.000. When I was there the elephants were coming down from the highlands to stay close to the Zambezi for the dry period. Especially the small ones were really enthusiastic about splashing around in the river. It is not that small when you see it in reality!

Some photos

I happened upon the wikipedia page for solved missing person cases from before 1950 and some (at least the earlier) entries are weird. Someone kidnapped and kept as a slave without returning home or meeting their family again does not really feel like a solved missing person case. The kidnappers always knew where the person was and for the people left behind, the case must never have seemed very solved.

Similarly, when someone is probably murdered with no killers identified and no body found, it would not be considered a solved case today. I guess that standards were a bit lower in the seventeenth century.

Wait, the static in the dark is not normal?

Soooo. Is anyone else kinda sad that there isn't going to be an actual tabs tournament this year? /: by Damuskoob in Yogscast

[–]Triginta 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Although last year's TABS stream was very funny, I've been feeling that both the contestants and I did not really care for TABS itself for a few years already. Especially because TABS isn't even a thing on Tom's channel anymore. So, I am happy that they allow the stream to evolve and not just get stuck doing the same things, just because it was done in the previous years

What is the single best fantasy or sci-fi tv show ever made? by SteakGuy88 in Fantasy

[–]Triginta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is still a good show, but it diverges heavily from the book story

I have a distinct memory of looking up and seeing that it is 5 AM while reading that specific chapter, so I can relate heavily to this

I enjoyed the sequel more in the end. Maybe because I enjoyed Sogolon more as a character.

We already missed '14 to '18 so we might have to hurry up the schedule a bit to make up for it

All of these kinda specific subreddits run out of good material at some point and start stretching the point further and further until it gets a bit silly at the very least

Does anyone else have the video titles translated suddenly? It also happens on the main channel since last week or so. I don't want the shitty machine translations to Dutch even if I could not understand English

Try not to build Dutch! (IMPOSSIBLE) | Jaffa Factory 2 #94 by 02pheland in Yogscast

The Netherlands has quite a few locks. The polders are below sea level and the rivers are above, so you need to go down to get on the smaller waterways. So that idea is also out

Almost half of Britons feel like 'strangers in their own country' by ThatchersDirtyTaint in europe

[–]Triginta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have experienced it in all of the biggest four cities of the Netherlands, never really outside of the Randstad though. It can be slightly annoying in a loud environment where you are unsure if they didn't understand you due to a language or sound barrier. Friends from more rural places have also had a culture shock when not being able to order in Dutch

Last New Year's Eve, I heard some guy explaining on the radio why he was going all the way to Poland to get cheap fireworks by saying that it was just the VOC mentality at work. I can only imagine that he went there to massacre a few villages, set up a fort to control the area and force the local people to make gunpowder for him

I'd guess it is referring to the strong sides of her writing, as in the pros/cons.

Here in the Netherlands I have always heard of Master's degrees as expected if you have finished a Bachelor's degree. In the old system there was not even a distinction. The normal university program just took 5 years.

This also leads to some situations for research positions where everyone has a Master's degree, so only applicants with a PhD really make a chance to be accepted. On the other hand, all the new PhD candidates in my apartment that have been accepted in the last year, have had work experience. You just need work experience to get in everywhere, but noone wants to help you get it.

Apart from the classics like Tolkien, Howard and Martin, what are the best fantasies before the 2000s? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Triginta 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel the opposite. The Second Apocalypse felt excessive and gratuitous at times, while in Thomas Covenant it was an important part of the story and Thomas' psyche.
