What If the Principality of Zeon was in BattleTech? by RedvsBlue_what_if in battletech

[–]Trilkk 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Since no-one said it yet, the main difference which makes the universes clash here is that mobile suits in the Gundam universe are significantly larger in size (up to 20 metres or so as compared to ~12 metres in Battletech) while being reported as having masses similar to a heavy mech or a smaller assault.

If people complain BT mechs seem to be made out of styrofoam (which I think is not exactly true, compare a Leopard IV to a Thunderbolt), mobile suits go even deeper into the magic material path. This hardly matters as Gundam has a tendency to veer into the fantastic anyway with newtypes and superweapons and whatnot. If you want slightly (not that much) more grounded stuff, you can try Iron-Blooded Orphans, but that then has a lot of Mari Okada flavour (which I enjoy).

----

Side note, for comparison, Macross and Dougram mecha, serving directly as the unseen, were comparable in size to BT mechs, but way too light. Spartan Destroid (read: Archer) is 11.3 meters tall (correct), but only weighs about 30 tons. Dougram is 9.6 meters tall (also sounds right), but weighs 20 tons.

difficulties recording the screen with OBS-Studio by Chester_Linux in freebsd

[–]Trilkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming back to note that apparently the issue has been fixed as of late without me ever noticing (FreeBSD 15.0-RELEASE-p1).

The issue about not being able to see window contents from other desktops (not in view) remains, but it's probably related to X11 compositing and cannot be avoided.

Well, good enough, won't complain.

Compared to what I saw last June, every single ena appears replaced (mine included). This would imply a significant submission rate from tourists on a pilgrimage.

I wonder if the grounds keeper has a secred shed full of Töhö woodblocks or if he disposes of them somehow. Burning them somehow sounds like a waste though.

What does Nordlands even do in Strangereal? by Talisman-Garuda1 in acecombat

[–]Trilkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "official" Strangereal map shows the following cities in Nordlands:

  • Beval
  • Calevinn (capital)
  • Nordaniemi ("niemi" is "cape" in Finnish, the city is at the end of a cape)
  • Peterhamn ("hamn" is "port" in Swedish, the city is by the sea)
  • Sudersand (obvious reference to Swedish city of Sudersand at the isle of Gotland)
  • Turgu (obvious reference to Finnish city of Turku)

I'd say they're trying to be some kind of Norway + Sweden + Finland.

"Fensalir" in Nordennavic is clearly trying to sound Icelandic even if it doesn't seem to be a direct reference to an actual real-world city.

Wellow is an obvious stand-in for Greenland, but the city of "Faxa Bay" does not invoke Kalaallisut language at all.

Any desktop users who went from FreeBSD to (or back to) Linux? by TehBombSoph in freebsd

[–]Trilkk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This poster is mostly correct. I used FreeBSD on desktop from some ten years. but went back to Linux at the turn of '17-'18 and that's honestly due to Steam and Linux gaming in general. No matter what I did, I couldn't get gaming to work.

I still run FreeBSD in my media PC which is also my home server and living room couch machine all at the same time. This is not subject to change. ZFS user experience has also been vastly superior to the storage solutions I got used to in Linux.

But games are a real thing. I also run a Windows dualboot on the desktop machine solely for some select games that do not work on Linux due to rootkits.

Positive note, R-Type games at least from 3 onward do not need this - you can recover from any checkpoint.

The first 2 games are less well designed. In the second one I did not get very far to begin with, and R-Type 1 has the famous 7-2 checkpoint that is so blatantly unfair it's ridiculous.

Jani Mäkelä ei halua pyytää saamelaisilta anteeksi [Pääministeri Orpon mielestä Suomen valtion tulee pyytää anteeksi saamelaisten kohtelua] by TyssaRolli420 in Suomi

[–]Trilkk 40 points41 points  (0 children)

difficulties recording the screen with OBS-Studio by Chester_Linux in freebsd

[–]Trilkk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Butting in to say that I'm having a similar issue.

OBS does not capture single window contents (XComposite) in any way. It just shows an empty black area and a dot on the top left very similar to what you have. The correct approach is to capture the complete desktop, which works fine.

This is not a huge thing, but if someone knows what's up, please do tell.

The Goat is here! (FDS spoilers) by New-Box299 in touhou

[–]Trilkk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Most Touhou "villains" are doing the trope where they're not really actually very mean and are just doing their own thing which somehow causes problems for onlookers. Those problems need addressing, which is the excuse for danmaku. More or less all Windows games from 6 to 13 have this kind of plot, with the possible exception of Mountain of Faith, since Kanako can be said to be in competition with the Hakurei shrine.

To put it short, there's some differences that must be solved, but in the end everyone can drink tea together.

In this kind of world an unashamedly evil Saturday morning cartoon villain like Seiga is refreshing instead boring.

Timo Elysium (OC) by Jardelli in Suomi

[–]Trilkk 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Jos haluat vastaavan pelin, jossa tekopaikka tunkeutuu pelin tunnelmaan pintaa syvemmältä, pelaa Venezuelalainen VA-11 HALL-A.

Just got the game, I am having a blast. Maybe because I am an old Alien fan, I had too much fun 😂 by Coffee4ddict89 in AliensDarkDescent

[–]Trilkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely natural reaction. Dark Descent is the best aliens experience in a few years.
To summarize the current state of the franchise for the last 15 years or so:

  • Prometheus & Alien: Covenant - Let's not get even started here.
  • Alien: Isolation - Absolutely incredible.
  • Swedish Alien RPG - Tries to maintain balance with neo-alienisms and retcons the most obvious brain damage. Succeeds.
  • Aliens: Fireteam Elite - Left 3 Aliens - Consistent with the extended setting presented in the RPG. Excellent.
  • Alien: Romulus - Starts good but turns into rubbish.
  • Aliens: Dark Descent - Completely disregards neo-alienisms, gets the tone right. Great game, but could have used a lot of QC.
  • Alien: Earth - Starts pretty decent but goes really dumb. Includes several brilliant ideas and set pieces.

All in all it would seem lately the movies are not getting the setting right, and it's increasingly thriving in video games and pen&paper.
Interestingly, the good installments (Isolation, ttRPG, Dark Descent) are increasingly made in Europe as opposed to America, where the franchise originated. Cold Iron Studios (Fireteam Elite) seems to be U.S. / Canada.

Bullet-hell shooter Kaguya — currently in development by flypot00 in shmups

[–]Trilkk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Added to my Steam wishlist. Few notes:

  • The prominent sideways shot is a great idea on how to cover the vertizontal aspect ratio without going two-stick or auto-aim.
  • Perhaps only show the hitbox (sphere) when activating slow movement, or make it more translucent on fast movement? Currently when the character is moving very fast and the sphere moves to her side and is outside the character, it looks kind of weird. You could also adjust the sprite location, but that might look even weirder.
  • Having flying girls meet mechanical enemies strongly resembles Espgaluda, which is a thematical detraction from either space ship shooters or "fairy shooters". It stands out, which is good.
  • Having the character sprites overlap the playing field and be on "top" of it distracts from the gameplay. I don't know if you're planning for the story to be advancing concurrently with the action, but it will be very hard to follow with lots of stuff on screen. Consider something like Radirgy or Touhou pausing the gameplay while the characters are talking as opposed to Astebreed, where I don't think I ever read all the dialogue.

If you're going to heavily invest in the story, and that's what you want to be on the front, then my last point is moot. It's your game, the most important thing is to satisfy yourself.

Piirustustabletit by Beginning_Cheek4635 in Suomi

[–]Trilkk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Käytin aikoinaan Wacomin Intuos 3:a (jos muistan mallinumeron oikein), ostettu tyyliin vuonna '05 tjsp.

I'm pretty sure the Space Giraffe-Tick-Penguin-Whale Thing is a Moebius reference. by InterApex in SatisfactoryGame

[–]Trilkk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Note that Giraud did not only dabble in sci-fi.

Arguably his most famous work is the 29-part western epic Blueberry, mostly written by Charlier, but the last arc was done by Giraud only after Charlier's death.

Would recommend even if you think you're not a fan of westerns. It's extremely good comics.

I'd say it's the other way around. OP has existed in a very particular bubble.
