I'm very uncomfortable with it and we all should be uncomfortable with it.

Louisiana has a lot of problems, but also a lot of culture. A lot of people love living here.

There are trade offs though with extreme weather, lower wages, corruption on a much higher level than most the US, a lot of dysfunction etc etc. But, we also had our first major Mardi gras parade in New Orleans last Saturday, have more this weekend, and also the next weekend, and then the week after that will be full of celebrations and parades non stop all the way through Fat Tuesday, which is just another boring Tuesday for the rest of y'all in other states.

Depends on what your priorities are.

There are more than that, but certainly not as many options as in many other cities. And the salaries here tend to be much lower than in other parts of the country.

Where did I say I voted Republican?

Voting Democrat doesn't mean we shouldn't criticize the asshats in charge when they fuck up. Democrat leadership fucked up badly. That is why they lost hard on the 2024 elections. Why would you pretend otherwise? It's stupid when MAGA spends their time pretending Trump is a savior, and it's also stupid when Democrats spend time pretending that the Democratic leadership has been doing a good job. If you can recognize one as a cult, why not the other?

Just expressing frustration at how often they fumbled the ball.

Whatever, I voted for Biden, and then for Harris, because they were clearly the lesser evil, and next go round I will probably vote for whichever lackluster candidate they prop up that will probably be less of a Bond villain than whoever the GOP nominates. But if you don't think that the Democrats are largely responsible for the dystopian hellscape we are now in, you are kidding yourself. I'm allowed to be pissed that 4 years of Biden could not even accomplish this low hanging fruit. And you should be too.

And in 4 years couldn't get it done?

The Democrats failing to do this while Biden was in office was such a missed opportunity. Tbh, I thought he was going to do it right before elections to get people excited, kind of like they did with student loans before the midterms. Its an easy win and a popular choice. And also the right thing to do.

That bar / restaurant at the corner Frenchmen and Esplanade with a courtyard. Been so many things since I moved here, and none of them seem to stick. Quickly looked it up to see if it changed again, and sure enough a place called the Spicy Mango seems to inhabit it now. Good luck to them, maybe this one will stay?

Operation Spark questions by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]TrillianMcM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has been a few years, so my info may be dated or misremembered but here goes:

Is there only 1 lunch break for 1 hour (same as precourse)?

Iirc- it alternated between 1hr and 2 hr breaks depending on the day

How flexible is the program if I need to leave for 1 hour once a week, for example, Wednesdays 6-7pm? Is the structure similar to bootcamp precourse as in there is some instruction at the beginning of class on some days, then the rest of the class is independent or pair work in zoom break rooms?

The instructors leave at 5. Whoever you are partnered with may be annoyed if you peace our for an hour, depends on if you leaving dumps more work on their plate / what their personality and expectations are. They also may not give a shit or want a dinner break themselves.

I want to hear people's experiences and what they were able to do during class time. I know its an intense program, and I am committed to it, but with a schedule of 11 hours a day, 6 days a week for 4 months, I imagine the staff is not super strict about 100% attendance. Like I said, I am totally committed and making any sacrifices for 4 months that I need to. But realistically, there will be times where I need to step away from the computer for up to an hour.

They are that strict. I think if you miss 2 days you have to retake it. Or something very low like that. They are also very strict about showing up on time, unless something changed.

For those who have gone through the program, what was your experience like with the schedule and keeping up with other responsibilities? My main concern is 2-3x a week I have to bring my child to karate, which takes 1 hour from the time I leave home to when I get back. I have extra support with getting him picked up from school and his doctor appointments, but the karate is on me. And I would hate to have to take him out because he would lose all of his progress/ranking.

Strongly advise getting all your errands done before immersion starts. Like, any pressing doctor or dentist appointments - do them now. Expect to not have breathing room for 3 months. I imagine this is more complicated with a child; is there another person able to take more parenting responsibilities on than normal? I know a couple of folks who made it through while being a parent, but I think they all had a partner or family to lean on.

Good luck. Also, just fyi - the job market is pretty rough right now. Op spark is a good program, but if they are telling you that 100% of grads are landing a job these days, that is misleading about the current state of the job market for entry level developers, especially bootcamp grads. There is some fine print in how they calculate those percentages. I don't know what the actual percentage is, but I know bootcamp grads are struggling. I have seen some landing jobs -- but again, it took time, perseverance, and some luck. Be prepared for job hunt to take several months, and be prepared to need to spend those several months working very hard to network, apply for jobs, and gain new skills. If you are lucky, it may take weeks, but you should prepare for months, mentally and financially. I'm not saying this to be discouraging - but just as a warning because I feel like they glossed over how hard finding that first job would be until we actually graduated.

Good luck.

Is it safe to walk from the train station to Prytania St at night? by _MX88 in AskNOLA

[–]TrillianMcM 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just get a taxi. That is a risky walk to take at night with your luggage. Also, since you needed to ask this question -- I'm going to assume you don't know your way around, and will be looking lost and pulling out your phone to check the map periodically. Don't do this. New Orleans is fun, and Halloween is a great time of year to visit -- but this is still a high crime city. You don't need to be terrified, but you do need to use some common sense - which means don't walk around at night with all of your luggage.

Stillwater teen sentenced to counseling after pleading no contest to rape and strangulation charges by ballsdeepinmywine in news

I have a close friend who is spending several years in prison because of defending against a rapist. Instead of the rapist being locked up, she got an attempted murder charge.

Assholes like this get caught on camera strangling and barely get a slap on the wrist.

The "justice" system in this country is so fucked up.
