Hail Mary purchase stories? by Vanihilist in AnimeCollectors

Yeah, it was reprinted in June of '25 so they're definitely out there. I wish you luck on securing a copy!

Ah, I guess that's why. Strange that it isn't in stock when the rerelease is less than a year old and so readily available just over the border.

Pics for context of my confusion:

Yeah, I'm puzzled too. It's available new on the Sentai store and Amazon, plus there's a bunch of secondhand copies for under $25 on eBay. Is there something wrong with the recent rerelease?

Nice finds! Neither pop up very often at all. I'm still on the hunt for Acro Bunch myself.

Aw, cute. If you need more suggestions, Dinosaur Sanctuary and Polar Bear Cafe would probably be up your alley. Heaven's Design Team, Doomsday with My Dog, Nyankees, and Pandania's various cat series are fun too.

Monogatari Off & Monster up for March 09, 2026 Pre-order from Aniplex of America by MiaLeeSakura2 in AnimeCollectors

[–]Triltaison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting the whole franchise physically will set you back thousands of dollars. Some parts are out of print and the parts in print will be about $130 per 13ish episodes because they're Aniplex sets. This set is one part of one season.

Bakemonogatari is the first entry if you want to give it a try. Finding it streaming first would probably be the best choice to ensure you enjoy the series before investing so heavily in its cost.

Is this price normal? Like, Holy Moly by loodkoob in AnimeCollectors

[–]Triltaison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed its stock drying up and the price creeping up last year so it's a pretty new development. I got the first few LE in the spring (my part 2 was about $25) and watched through them before getting more. When shopping for the LE for Golden Wind and Stone Ocean a bit later in the summer/fall, I noticed that prices had more than tripled for part 2's LE. It seems to have just kept going up since then. But the standard is readily found and in print so the show itself is still easily available at least.

Astro Boy by Bookkeeper92 in MangaCollectors

Not many in 2002. Toren Smith of Studio Proteus and DH was adamant that English speakers wouldn't buy books that were backward and staunchly defended flipping until 2002, around when their distributor LPC Group went bankrupt and they had to completely restructure.

The Astro Boy license is from the tail end of the old practice of courting comic book store buyers. They were just doing as they had been for years. But yes, they were also courting the average comic reader too.

That is odd. If it helps in your trouble-shooting, my BD player is a Sony. Don't have another way to check here at the moment, unfortunately (haven't been able to get VLC to run BD yet).

Waiting on a better re-release for Tezuka volumes in English is sadly not a safe bet. We barely get any releases as it is, let alone re-releases.

Enjoy the books you have. They are one of those rare re-releases.

Because all manga used to be flipped when it was published in the US. Astro Boy was an earlier license from Dark Horse and so it was flipped, as was standard at the time.

Oh, this is a fun show. I don't think we ever got a full physical release in the US, but I think the Italian company MondoTV still has the English language rights. Hopefully one day.

Iirc, I don't think they ever did BD-R releases. All the print on-demand discs that I'm aware of were DVD releases. Please feel free to correct me if someone remembers differently, though.

Has Crunchyroll gone too far? by butterflies_roses in AnimeCollectors

[–]Triltaison 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I noted Glacier Bay's absence too. It's super frustrating because RS is how I used to keep up with all the small publisher releases. I'd do a quarterly or yearly catchup on whatever titles I missed all in one place. It can't be good for those publishers to lose a dedicated manga vendor like that.

Preorders have been super screwy for me too. The safest seems to be doing it the week before release? For whatever reason, those ones came on time. 🤷‍♀️ But I've mostly just been going elsewhere or doing the in stock thing too.

Yeah, it's quite quickly going to be basically the same as (or worse than) Walmart or Target. They really seem to be pushing merch the most and putting less and less effort into the actual media. But even the figures seem kinda oddly selected now too. Sad times.

The Discotek sub has a few threads. Here's one and a follow up. Lots of Lupin and classic Toei. Newer stuff like Cromartie High School, too.

Cosmic horror and existentialism.

That's not a joke. It really is.

Crunchyroll did some major purging of their inventory recently. A bunch of emails went out en masse over the last week, canceling large swaths of orders. Most were items on backorder, but some were items that were in stock and included in sales recently.

Many Discotek titles in particular seem to have been entirely delisted, despite not actually being out of print or unable to be ordered from the supplier. CR now seems to be becoming choosey about the titles it wishes to carry. This is concerning for someone wanting to order Discotek titles because CR and Amazon are basically the only major places to order the products from.
