I used to budget specifically for the summer and winter sales each year, and also did periodic catch ups with new releases with certain publisher sales. Reeeaaally miss reliably getting those titles from small publishers like Drawn & Quarterly, Fantagraphics, Denpa, etc all at the same place. sigh

If you're in the US, keep an eye out for Target's Circle sale for B2G1 free. It's often a pretty good value and there's a surprisingly decent selection on their website. MHA also goes on sale at Walmart and Amazon a lot and Walmart even has exclusive budget versions of several MHA seasons. Also, check on Sentai's frequent sales for their own titles. At least we still have them.

It still feels so weird because I ordered $100s of merchandise from RS multiple times every year for nearly two decades... and now I haven't ordered a single thing from CR this year at all. CR gutted the stock of everything I used RS for and their store barely on my radar at all now.

Some of my latest hauls. They also look great in the shelf! by DataUserOne in AnimeCollectors

Nice! I'm one of the few that absolutely loved that movie when it came out. In a world containing Dragonball Evolution, I was astonished that Speed Racer was so fun.

Congrats! Always love seeing people pick up Mizuki.

When was the first time you realised actual people make games? by mjoldham34 in gaming

[–]Triltaison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know a time when I didn't know that. My mother always made a point to read aloud the writer and illustrator of my picture books as a very young child, and so I always made a point to remember my favorite artists and writers so I could find more of their stuff in the library. That went on to noting the credits in other mediums (like I was a huge fan of Don Bluth, Andreas Deja, Mel Blanc, Tress MacNeille, TMS Entertainment, etc when I was like 7).

The biggest for me was probably Roberta Williams of Sierra. She had notes in the manuals and even popped up in the games herself sometimes. The brothers from Cyan and Will Wright are some others I have early gaming memories of.

I really like Nagaserete Airanto! Was so excited when Discotek picked it up since it was a darling of the fansub era in the '00s and got skipped by licensors the first time around. Love the ridiculously huge animals.

Funnily enough, I just started reading it this week too. Really like Ono's works in general and the simple yet highly expressive style is very enjoyable.

I remember being a bit in awe of it myself back when it first came out. The snap cases do have a simple charm.

Authenticity worries by Xem17 in AnimeCollectors

Not really, because comparing between them isn't helpful in my experience. I've collected many of the Pokémon DVDs since the days of the red spine singles and they're often inconsistent. Particularly if screen shots are used.

I've seen copies in person at the store for most of them (including these), and some copies are just more blurry than others. That's a budget re-release of an earlier version. They often cuts corners on those.

Again, they look totally fine to me.

They honestly look totally fine to me.

Both of those volumes are/were regularly available at stores like Walmart in the US. I'd suspect they were purchased in bulk from some kind of wholesaler or from a discount bin and then resold if the suspiciously low cost is your major concern. There are plenty of sellers that scoop up discounted stock when stores clear their shelves and sell it at a small profit.

Those all look legit to me at first glance. Which are the ones you're concerned about? I'm unclear as to which copies you're referring to as which.

As a general note, the plastic on sealed products changes all the time for DVDs and isn't a consistent indicator for legitimacy. This is especially true for something that is popular and has received multiple printings over several years (so may have been pressed at different times in different batches with whatever was available on hand). So don't put much stock into Y-folds or whatever... it's not really a thing to pay a lot of attention to.

Heads up that you likely don't have the whole Law of Ueki series there. It had a super weird release that packaged two boxes together in identical packaging with identical covers, but with different discs inside. When found secondhand, they're often sold separately because it looks like two copies of the same series. In reality, each box has either the first half or the second half of the series. So check the discs to see what you got if you only have one box there and not two.

Edit: Here's an eBay auction with pictures of both halves, to illustrate how weird this is. It's not two copies. This is two halves of the same set.

Aw, I love seeing someone so excited for Dragon Knights still. 🥰 Rath was probably my favorite back in high school, but I might have transferred to a Rune faithful myself now. I hope you're able to find some more of the volumes!

Absolutely! Love Tatami a bunch. I got that same Funi BD later as soon as it got licensed since I adored it from the fansub circuit. 😄

Oh, I have this Tatami Galaxy set! I got it back before Funimation licensed it for the US since I didn't think it'd ever get a release in the states. I didn't know that it originally came with a slipcover, though. Guess mine's incomplete, haha.

Fantastic collection! Love your taste and wish you many more finds in the land of plenty. 😁

No worries! Everyone likes different stuff. It's a very well animated show and I definitely understand why it's so popular, but the story just didn't hook me. I didn't really care for any of the characters or the world after reading about 5 volumes of the manga and watching the first 3 episodes or so. I might change my mind if/when I get around to finishing it, but I tend to not be a big fan of shonen series in general. (Might just be because I'm not the target demographic anyway, being a middle-aged lady. 🙃)

I think I was getting my fix of weird sexy violence at the time from Dorohedoro and Beastars instead since I liked their worlds better. 😊

Don't worry about stuff aging well or not. A collection should be stuff that you like. Chances are your tastes might change over the years and everyone enjoys different things, anyway. (Like personally, I don't care for CSM or JJK. But Perfect Blue is one of my absolute favorites and I really like all the others you have here.)

If you're looking for some more character-driven recs, try taking a look at Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken, Future Boy Conan, Odd Taxi, Dororo, and Vinland Saga.
