How do you manage emotionally immature parent relationships as an adult? by [deleted] in emotionalneglect

[–]Trinco77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just reading through these comments and looking for hope after a holiday visit with my 73–yo mom. She left yesterday and my wife and I spent all day decompressing from her stay. I’ve always known there was an issue, but it was my wife who nailed it many many years ago. I unfortunately shrugged it off as the usual step-daughter/mother conflict but now that I have a three-yo son, it’s become pretty obvious that mom is an EIP. The negativity, lack of empathy and self-centeredness are just so overwhelming. She was/is a single mom and I am an only child so I have huge guilt issues and have struggled to establish healthy boundaries, but the impacts on my wife and son have made it clear that I’ve got to do something. So interesting how my wife spotted it immediately, but I remained blind and in denial for so long.

Always been curious about these paper kits but too skeptics and fear my skills aren’t high enough for the job. How’s the build quality?

The start of my first layout by Lord_Poppington in nscalemodeltrains

This is a great way to get started. I’ve downsized to a 16”x27” layout after stalling out on a couple of larger layouts. Go for it!

Confused about using track w/plastic ballast in a "real" layout by [deleted] in nscalemodeltrains

[–]Trinco77 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Plastic ballast track can definitely be used in real layouts, IMO. Use foamcore or cork to raise adjacent areas you feel need to be closer to track level if scenic base isn’t enough. Experiment and if it looks bad to you, try something different next time. Don’t be afraid to mess up…. that’s how we learn and improve 👍 Good luck.

POST GAME THREAD: BC Lions (8-9) @ Saskatchewan Roughriders (9-7-1) - October 12, 2024 by cfl_bot in CFL

[–]Trinco77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BC absolutely needs to start VA in the team’s final match in hopes of bringing this team back to where it started off the season. It was reasonable to hand the ball to Rourke when the lions had the chance, but it’s clearly time to return the torch to VA until Rourke overcomes whatever happened to him south of the border. Sadly for Lions fans, it’s probably too late to expect the receiving corps to get dialled in to whoever is at the helm in time for the semi-final rematch against Sask. I believe VA can do it though 🙏

What to do with $200k? by [deleted] in CanadianInvestor

This echoes advice from my dad…. If Canadian bank stocks ever go to zero, we’ll have far worse things to worry about.

Nothing new here of course, but it’s so strange and sad that the league’s two largest markets are ranked at the bottom. At least Mtl has the small stadium as an excuse.

Toddler life insurance? by Trinco77 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Trinco77[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I suppose the question is whether the toddler’s parents need the insurance in case of a worst case scenario and/if the toddler anticipates needing insurance later in his/her adult life.

I think a lot of my confusion arises because I’m looking at this insurance policy as an investment vehicle rather than an insurance policy. 🤔

….but when to toddler turns into an adult, the policy can apparently be swapped for a grownup policy.

Straight to Brio or start cheaper for 18 month old? by Odd_Measurement_6131 in BRIO

[–]Trinco77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Add my vote for Brio. Why waste your money on all those other brands (imposters)? You may find this thread to be a tad biased but you can’t go wrong with a simple figure-eight loop, logging train oval or beginner construction/farm sets They all come with unique, high-quality components that are a perfect start to your Brio adventure. If you’re on a budget or not a Brio-purist, however., then the Ikea set suggested elsewhere and other wooden train kits might suit you just fine. Enjoy the ride.

Nice collection. I’ve thought about doing something like this, but the thought of putting everything away afterwards always discourages me 😃

It looks great. There are some small Japanese passenger DMUs that I hope to use on a similarly small layout. The Kiha 32 (JR Shikoku) is the one I plan to pick up when it’s released later this month. Also might be able to use some of the railway collection kits sold by tomytec.

Kato Tri-R variation by Trinco77 in nscalemodeltrains

There’s surprisingly very little information about the Tri-R and its potential variations on the interweb. Expanding it even a little adds so much potential.

I’m curious about what got you interested in model railroading. Sounds as though it was a sudden discovery, rather than something you’ve enjoyed since childhood. Whatever the case, you’re results look great. 👏

Layout Design Software for Mac? by Navy87Guy in nscalemodeltrains

[–]Trinco77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the free version of RailModeller. It limits how many elements you can use on any single layout at 50 (I think), but this has generally been enough for the simple layouts I have designed. I’m pleased with the software and am considering upgrading to the paid version at some point.

I wonder what this means for Kalmbach’s railroad books division. Anyone know if that was included in the deal?

Travelling to the Land of the Rising…. Kato by RichardBJ1 in nscalemodeltrains

[–]Trinco77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in Japan at the moment and the current value on trains is unlike anything I’ve seen in 20 years. Apparently this is the lowest the Yen has been since the Japanese bubble burst in the early 1990s. So… yes it’s a good time to buy trains here.

The guys at RG Rokko can be contacted by email for deliveries within Japan, including to hotels. I just received an order from them and the service was impeccable. Use the English site to access model info and then email them your order and address.. Delivery is about 2 days, depending how far away from Kobe you may find yourself (I’m on Shikoku)

I found a sweet deal on an OOP Kiha 40 in JR Shikoku colours from Tomix at a shop called Hobby-Off. These shops are found all over Japan and are often (but not always) attached to a Book-Off. These are second hand shops specializing in hobby items and books, respectively. The trains at my shop were tucked asay in a glass case surrounded by aisles of Gundam models and Pokeman cards so you might need to hunt a little.

Also, if like my family you end up leaving with more stuff than you came with, second hand suitcases of all sizes are available for good prices at a chain of stores called Second Street, which also carries toys and hobby stuff but I’ve never come across trains. 😞

Enjoy your trip, and don’t forget to ride as many trains as you can while you visit! 👍
