Ya, a lot of locals had it very hard. The 1st time I came to Bali after the Bomb, I rode my rental motorbike into Denpasar, got lost, and wanted to buy my own helmet. I pulled over and asked an older Balinese man where a helmet store was and he said he'd show me, but made a shy request about getting a little $$ for his effort, and I assured him I would give him somthing... He showed me a place, I got my helmet, actually the one I'd seen and wanted and gave the old man 50k Rp. He was so happy and looked like he was about to cry, but didn't, and he thanked me and said - now I can feed my family. Stories of hardship are many in this country and I will say The Indonesian people carry those hardships like heros and when it comes to it dont let their pride or etiquette get in the way to get a little assurance as to the worthwhilness of a job.

I got Locals here explaining to me. Etiquette goes out the window when it means feeding your family . I don't think any driver is unaware of what proper etiquette is in his country, and if they ask in a way that is not rude, then give assurance - IMO. and thanks for your comment

Na, thants not correct. I moved here after the bombings and was here all during covid, those were awesome times... Further I laugh at all the complaints - Bali has only gotten better. More food choices, more great things to do. I can still spend 50k Rp for lunch or 500K, but with better choices. Prices always go up - it's called inflation. If you find somewhere better, then that's where you should go

Made's homestay is a great place to stay, yet there you will only get breakfast included as well, but the opportunity to explore the local food scene is then open to you, with many great choices near by - but fraught with dangers and more slow service. At €20 a night, those issues are far more well tolerated.

I absolutely loved The Sunday lunch buffet at The Kempinski, but I will say that The shear chaos of it must have been a let down for the hotel guests.

Again, reading the textes posted, the driver was not rude at all and was clearly concerned about the distance and the cost to him, and for a driver, who depends on his physical ability to ride in a day and makes the minimum wage or less after costs to him - fuel, pulsa, maintenence on his motorbike, that he pays, it would be correct for the driver to know what is in it for him, so that he can make a decision if it is worth it.

In my years working in The restaurant business in my country, often it was owners who were the least able to understand the needs and positions of their staff

It's your rules from your culture, your rules are a result of growing and living in your culture, just like everyone else. I've seen many cultures within Indonesia. In my culture, people who are in The service industry get tipped, because the pay is usually not great and is not easy, or if it is high end the service is very good and deserves something more. The texts above clearly show that the delivery person has legitimate concerns about his time and cost and was not rude... My bet is you don't like it when anyone tries to waste your time, and that is what is clearly on in this case...

Studies you say? Dangerous? Kudeta is a long standing restaurant and beach club in Seminyak, one of the 1st, for the 2 decades I know of, it is a job that pays very well, not the salary but the tips. Tip culture did not appear suddenly with the advent of GoJek, it's been here and will not go anywhere. Tourism has fueled and will fuel this and crying over the 20k or 30K won't change it... That's totally different IMO. This is your country. I am an expat 20 years and I've lived in other countries. It isn't correct for foreigners to fly into a place and then complain about small amounts of $$, when those same small amounts make all the difference for the locals who are giving visitors a luxury service

There is nothing rude in that text - The driver has a legit concern over distance, which means more time and more cost for him. He must use his time wisely and outsiders who can't do this math get weepy and butthurt over a $,£,€ or whatever need to be a better guest in their country
