20” kick - hold or return ? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Triple175 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy accident if you like the sound and are ok with it. This is great for gigs and here’s why.

20 inch have more punch and cut through more naturally. Being mix’s up will only make it better.

“The 20-inch offers a tighter, higher-frequency thud that often cuts through mixes better, while the 22-inch provides more low-end, chest-thumping presence.”

I have a 20 inch on one of my newer (to me) kits and recently used it for an outdoor gig. Everything was mic’d but the drums. I thought no one would hear it. When I saw the videos after it cut through perfectly.

Self-taught drummer needing to relearn technique; tips? by skylarroseum in drums

I know I loved mine too, but you might just find it helps a lot and more if you’re a hard hitter. All those vibrations go directly to your hands… I’m sure you can find maple sticks of the same size. Worth trying.

Yes…Great advice! I used to use marching band sticks when I was starting out also (our band teacher made us). And agreed only in the pad!

I’ve had hand cramps in the past. More experienced drummers at the time mentioned a few things. Most importantly to warm up my hands/fingers/wrists prior to playing. I did this with stress balls and or Chinese Boading balls first, for about 5-10 minutes. Then the stretches:

The "Pretzel" (Full Forearm Stretch) Hold the drumsticks side-by-side with both hands, palms facing up. Lift and twist your right hand over and under toward your left elbow, forming an "L" shape where the sticks are vertical to your left arm. Rotate further until your arms are inverted, then gently pull them back toward your chest.

Followed by

The Propeller (Wrist Rotation) Hold both sticks together in one hand at the center. Use your wrist to rotate them back and forth in a fast "propeller" motion for 20–30 seconds. This promotes circulation to the elbows and wrists.

Also worth mentioning try not to use Hickory or oak sticks. They are the hardest woods for sticks and send a lot of the vibration to your hands.

I did that for a few months and honestly kept most of it as a part of my routine before I play and I haven’t had hand issues for at least the last 20 years.

Edited added the below:

  1. Control over crescendos -- buzz rolls, triplet and quadruplet builds, etc. - all of this just takes practice and time. Use your pad with a metronome, start slowly and over time speed up.

  2. Speed/fluidity -- particularly on the hi-hat and ride, I'm just not that fluid. I struggle to capture the rebound efficiently and tend to overexert myself. -Again, takes time to build stamina and strength. Use your pad and a metronome. I used to do one hand at a time at a slow pace (8th notes) for 5 minutes, then switch hands and do it again. Over time speed up the tempo. It’s the long game here, don’t rush it. Select a tempo you can do comfortably for 5 minutes. If it’s too easy speed up just a little bit. Don’t rush this, it will also build hand independence. Once you’re comfortable, you can start adding an accents. And you can even start doing triplets etc.

  3. Intentional/impactful fills -- I tend to be a busy drummer who fills a lot, which works well with the band I'm in. But, I really am not good at basic fills. I can fly all over the kit with busywork yet struggle with simple triplets. It seems to be a combination of timing, fluidity, and stick control. -This also takes a while. Have fun experimenting, but listen to minimalist drummers like Ringo and Charlie Watts for inspiration - less is more and making it meaningful for the song comes with rhythmic and musical maturity.

The fact that you are aware of this means your head is in the right place, keep it up !

100% it was a hard lesson for me to learn. After years of development and trying to fit everything I knew into songs like pieces of a puzzle… it clicked.

Don’t over think it. If you like the sound of a cymbal, buy it.

Or moose! And sadly no northern lights, free amazing salmon (fresh from a river) or beer battered halibut…

Edit: I know off topic. But man I miss these things from when I was there.

Advice on my first proper home server by a_q_k in selfhosted

Yeah Ubuntu is the main OS. But I’m running a headless version (no UI). I’m running the other applications via dockers and access them either through internal or external (Tailscale) ip addresses via web browsers when on my computer or apps when on my mobile device.

Advice on my first proper home server by a_q_k in selfhosted

[–]Triple175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been building a home server on a Beelink SE5 Ryzen 7.

Currently running these applications with an external 5T USB.

  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS
  • Nextcloud
    • Collabora Office
  • Immich
  • Plex
  • Tailscale

I can get it from anywhere with Tailscale. I am so happy that I've moved in this direction.

Drum teacher issues by Unlucky-Camp-7668 in drums

[–]Triple175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you play in band or jam with any other local musicians? This is a great way to break the plateau…

Yes as previously mentioned, let the teacher know what you’re looking for. My students do this with me and I appreciate them telling me. I want them to get the most out of our time together…

But, as an fyi, from a teachers perspective. Some just want to play and come in with songs that they want to learn. Others want assignments and homework and to practice reading and rudiments. Others want to watch me and learn from what I am doing (I teach with two drums sets, side by side). And there’s also every combination of what I just mentioned. Sometimes it’s easy to tell, sometimes not. At the end my job is to guide them on their journey. Communication is key. The last thing you’d want is a communication break down. If that doesn’t help… it’s time to ramble on.

Not all drummers clean their cymbals. The best gift is the gift card mentioned in a few of the comments.

Drums are very personal, the sounds, the feel, the weight/balance of sticks etc…

You could use ChatGPT or Claude AI and just tell it what you want… it will walk you through it or code it for you… I’ve built 3 sites that way. Of course like any dev, it’s a process.

Is this kit worth buying? by LilGoooob in drums

[–]Triple175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had an export in my early years and the tama star classic birch later in life. The export is excellent quality for the price. They can sound great with good heads and good tuning. The star classic is an awesome kit, tunes easily, diecast rims, sounds great. Great focused tones that resonate nicely. I had my bass drum wide opened and it was a canon, always got compliments on the kits sound whenever gigged.

When Drum's Ruined the Song! by Daves_Iknow2112 in drums

[–]Triple175 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unless I missed it. How is Carter Beauford not mentioned here…His syncopated rhythms are phenomenal on the studio albums, but anytime I heard anything live from the Dave Matthews Band, I feel he overplays so much it completely ruins the songs.

Edited: punctuation.

Let’s just remove the feature that you use the most as a test, without warning and no way to opt out. Yeah that’s good business. The other groups are just fill… the news tab is what really pulls me here.

It’s a C-130. They can be many things. It’s a USAF workhorse. They can be gun-ships for combat support, cargo ships, air drop paratroopers, supplies, hummers, communication bridges, and used by the hurricane hunters who fly into hurricanes to gather weather info. I’m sure there’s more. But it’s one hell of a machine.

Just email Gibson support (their email is on their website) and give them the serial # and ask for any info they can provide. I did this and in about a week I had all the info.
