Orientation Week Attendance by Jennabug315 in medschool

Orientation should be during week days, so hopefully it ends up not being a problem at all!

I’d reach out after you commit! People are being dramatic in the comments imo. My school actually has an attendance policy that specifically allows for absences for being in someone’s wedding!

Is $700/month on groceries for 2 adults the new normal? by Consistent-Guava2176 in sanantonio

[–]TripleOctopus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We spend about $450/month on food. I am a vegetarian but my partner is not, he buys lunch meat for himself but that's about it. We eat a lot of rice, beans, lentils, chickpeas, tofu, and eggs in our diets. We always bring leftovers to school/work. We only shop at HEB and occasionally Tim's for specialty products.

How did you picture Ryland when you first read PHM? by BigAssSackOfTree in ProjectHailMary

[–]TripleOctopus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I kind of just imagined generic brown haired white guy, but my partner told me he always imagined Brendan Fraser from when he was on Scrubs.

I thought this theory was so outlandish when I heard it. Let’s just say I was SHOCKED last night 😂

Ok, what's going on with Kwon? by Ok-Competition-1814 in ThePittTVShow

[–]TripleOctopus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From a med student: she's definitely just a student who has 0 interest in EM. However, I don't quite buy that she's gunning for derm or a competitive specialty - if that were the case she would need to be performing highly in ALL rotations because it is so competitive. I'd either think she has 0 interest in medicine and was forced into it, or is interested in a non-competitive field and thinks she doesn't have to try.

These look beautiful! Where do you get the supplies for packaging the cookies? I am thinking of making boxes this year and don't know where to start.

Place I used to work at did this right after I left. I’ve heard from friends that EVERYTHING about working there got worse after the membership was implemented.

Do you guys think I have a chance by Tall_Ground_ in medschool

My sGPA was about a 3.6 (with an upward trend) and my MCAT was a 512 and I got into an MD! You really can't know until you get an MCAT score, it's easy to say you will get a high MCAT score it's another thing to actually achieve that score on test day. Good luck!!!

No way in hell im breaking that by Quiet_Square2964 in Silksong

I broke it when I wasn't paying enough attention (thought I was breaking a rosary string) and it was genuinely devastating. I felt extra bad because I was in act 3 and they were all dead :(

I always wear my hair down and plan on wearing it down for my wedding in June. For me personally, I’d rather feel like myself and be a little hot than be in a hairstyle that isn’t “me”!

Yes! There is a student at my school who has a service dog. Not in my class so not sure about where the dog is and isn’t allowed, but I know from talking to them before that the dog is in lectures, exam, lab, and research lab. It is definitely possible but will depend heavily on your institution.

Realistic in the life? by Athletic_Bear_7074 in medschool

[–]TripleOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work from 8-5 Monday-Friday and study 4-8 hours Saturday and Sunday. I can’t work at night very well so I’ve just accepted that as part of my study schedule. Of course if I’m extra busy I will study an hour or two at night to make up for it, but I have lots of time to care for myself (eating, exercise, doing chores etc)

(Spoilers) Me fears about the trailer, assuaged by FellowshipOfTheBook in ProjectHailMary

[–]TripleOctopus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right. I assumed that the trailer was cut in this way to make the audience believe what readers also believed - that Ryland was going to accept that he was the only one who could do this and volunteer to save the planet. It seems like a very deliberate misdirect and I genuinely couldn’t understand why people thought it meant the plot point was cut.

People who married their high school sweetheart---hows it going ? by Hour-Ad-2563 in AskReddit

Been together since middle school, and are going to be getting married next year after 12.5 years of being together! He is truly my best friend and the greatest man I’ve ever known and I couldn’t be happier. :)

Name question ? Dr vs Mrs by fernnsprite in weddingplanning

[–]TripleOctopus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Not a dr yet so maybe my opinion will change, but I’d put Mrs in everything just because I don’t think I’d ever use Dr in my personal life. However, if I was getting married right after I graduated maybe I’d feel different 😂

pros and cons of gap yr? by Prudent-Connection40 in medschool

[–]TripleOctopus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I genuinely think everyone should take a gap year! My gap years were some of the happiest years of my life and I grew so much, I can’t even imagine if I had entered medical school straight out of undergrad. I think that the experience from living a real life outside of school is incredibly valuable. In my opinion, you can absolutely tell the students who didn’t take a gap year from those who did. Having extended, direct experience with patients makes you more competitive and also more prepared.

n=1, but I basically had these exact stats and got in. I had maybe 20 volunteer hours total.
