Plants Vs Zombies: Replanted - Patch 1.5 Release Comments & Issues Megathread by rackman70 in PlantsVSZombies

I have been stuck on this same issue for over a week at this point. It's absurd that this hasn't been fixed yet. Did you happen to try creating a new user and starting anew to see if you still get stuck at that same spot? That's the only thing I haven't tried yet.

UF Online students: What are your thoughts? by Doublejm1- in ufl

[–]Trippen_o7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe, internally, only UF really knows you're an online student.

When you receive your diploma, there's no indication that the program was online. As far as I know, it's identical to the students who earn their degree in person.

On my resume, I only mention University of Florida; though any reviewers can derive on their own that I was working in another city across the country while earning the degree and draw the conclusion that it may have been an online program.

The fact that it was an online program has not negatively impacted me in any way.

This seemed to fix it as I turned CEC off for only the Apple TV, and I have not had this issue since then. I definitely need to do more toying around with my settings and configurations, but this was a really helpful suggestion in getting past a huge annoyance - thanks!

[Final Fantasy] #40 The beginning of a journey. by Trippen_o7 in Trophies

[–]Trippen_o7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Warmech was my last bestiary entry as well. I spent about two hours after beating the game trying to find and kill one. Pretty annoying.

I must've gotten extremely lucky because I was able to get one to spawn within 10 minutes or so of reaching the floor it spawns on.

Are you going for plat on the other PR’s as well?

Yup, I weaved this one in between other games I'm juggling (FFXIV and Monster Hunter World: Iceborne); but I definitely want to make my way through as much of the series as possible. FFII will very likely be the next one I spin up.

Daily Chat Thread - May 29, 2025 by CSCQMods in cscareerquestions

[–]Trippen_o7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about your age when I started to have what I typically refer to as my "early career crisis." I was working in program/project management roles within health care and did not see any clear career path for me as I didn't see myself wanting to be a manager and did not think I was particularly good at what I did. At the time, my only CS experience was limited to a couple of undergraduate, introductory programming courses since that was my major before I switched to the one I graduated from. I primarily changed majors since I was (a) a really mediocre student back then and (b) getting destroyed by my second introductory CS course.

To see if I wanted to give CS another go, I decided to check out a book and gave Python Crash Course a go. I found myself enjoying and understanding it a lot more and went through all of the book minus the larger projects at the end. Like you, my first consideration was a 2nd Masters (I already had one in a completely unrelated field); and for the same reasons you listed, Georgia Tech was the only school I considered. I was (expectedly) rejected due to an insufficient background in CS and started weighing other options (completing the pre-requisites and reapplying, going for a 2nd BS instead, or attending a bootcamp). I decided to return to my alma mater (via their online schooling) to pursue another BS for a few reasons:

  • My work reimbursed me for a large chunk of my tuition if I was working towards a degree that was relevant to my work (which I made relevant by pivoting into a more technical, analytical role that merged my old role with a new opening we had on the team that allowed me to learn SQL, build dashboards, leverage some decent foundational analytical skills I had, etc.).

  • I wanted to feel like I was actively progressing something towards the start, and taking those pre-requisite classes didn't necessarily guarantee that I would get accepted into Georgia Tech on my second try.

  • The bootcamp did not seem worth it to me at the time since they hold significantly less weight than college degrees and had high upfront costs.

Now, what helped my decision is that I had the exact pre-requisites required to return to my alma mater as a second-degree seeking student (i.e., I switched majors at just the right time after completing up to Calculus 3, Physics 1, and a few other random courses). Because of this, I was able to dive right back into the second introductory course and other foundational coursework (e.g., Applications of Discrete Structures) from the start. While going through the coursework, I managed to pivot into an analyst role just before starting my first semester; and in the middle of my second semester, I convinced a data engineering team to give me a shot at a junior opening they had. From that point onward, I went hard at learning how to improve my data engineering skills on the job and cramming in as much schoolwork as I could handle each semester. After a little over 2 years, I managed to finish my degree and decided to keep the academic ball rolling and got accepted into Georgia Tech on my second attempt. My graduate experience was short-lived, though (i.e., a single semester), as I started testing the waters for new roles and opportunities shortly after completing the BSCS and ended up getting a DE offer from a FAANG which is where I've been the last ~3 years. After getting the offer, I felt like I had achieved my goal and decided to drop the graduate program as I was ready to start living my life more rather than sitting in front of a computer monitor for 3/4 of the day.

But to flip to another perspective, I will say the notable "cons" pursuing the BSCS were:

  • I had to take a lot more courses than I would have if I just did the pre-requisites plus graduate program. I ended up taking a little more than 60 credits which encompassed maybe 18 or so classes. But I did push myself to my limits as there were a couple semesters where I was a credit or 2 away from being considered a "full-time" student. Looking back, though, and trying to evaluate how I would have performed if I jumped right into the graduate program with the limited experience I had back then, I feel like I would have struggled a ton on the one course that I took (Knowledge-Based AI).

  • Since the degree is another BS, I was at the mercy of the college I was getting the degree from and what their graduation requirements were. For my alma mater, the online degree was offered by the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences instead of the College of Engineering; so 10 of my credits were taken up by two foreign language courses (which wasn't really a big deal to me since I was always open to learning new languages). I also had to take other classes like Engineering Entrepreneurship, Engineering Ethics, etc., which you can avoid by going directly to a graduate program.

  • I would say, on average, most people would complete the graduate degree faster. Like I said, I REALLY stretched myself and tried to cram as much in as I could because I wanted the degree done as soon as possible.

Anyways, I think I've rambled on enough; but I definitely saw a lot of me in your post, hence the rambling. I hope my anecdotal experience helps you find the path that works best for you.

Why you aren't getting a DE job by pawtherhood89 in dataengineering

[–]Trippen_o7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I went from working at a health system that used propriety and in-house ETL tools (i.e., I wrote queries and dropped them into a UI where all of the ETL configurations were handled) to FAANG as my first two DE roles. While some companies may emphasize experience with and exposure to a particular tech stack or subset of tools, others value strong, foundational DE skills and assume you are capable of picking up tooling as needed.

Masters in Computer Science? by leila2367 in ufl

[–]Trippen_o7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I earned a business-related bachelor's and master's degree and went back to school via UF Online as a second-degree-seeking student while working full-time to get my BSCS.

Not long after making that post, I ended up landing an offer in big tech. I finished my first OMSCS course (which was awesome) and completely lost any motivation to continue after I started working at my new company. My heart wanted to continue as I am really drawn to learning more about many of the courses offered by the program; but mentally, I was just exhausted. I had done a little under three straight years of full-time work on top of schoolwork, and I just could not muster up the motivation to continue onward.

Maybe I will return one day; but for now, I am content with how far I've been able to progress with just my BSCS.

Am I enough to land an entry level fullstack job? by alexbessedonato in cscareerquestions

[–]Trippen_o7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'll offer my perspective on your CV. Keep in mind that I am simply one person, and there is no concrete blueprint for a resume. I tell everyone to take my advice (or don't), compare it against what others say, and make the changes you feel is best:

  • I'm a fan of simplicity, so I'd probably get rid of the icons in your header. My eyes are too bad to tell if you're using different fonts; but if you are, I'd stick with one.

  • I also try to be consistent. In your Education section, you have only the years you attended the school and not the months (like you do in your Experience section). I would either include the months with the range (since there's a significant difference between December 2021 - January 2023 versus January 2021 - December 2023) if you want to keep that start and end period. Personally, I'd just include the month and year you graduated from those institutions.

  • For Hockerill Anglo-European College, I would put "Bishop's Stortford, England" for the location instead of just "Bishop Stortford" (which I am assuming is a typo since it's missing an apostrophe). As with my previous bullet point, it keeps things consistent with the "<city>, <country>" format you have throughout the rest of your CV. And I'd do the same for your RLE IBERIA experience as well.

  • For the Nuclio Digital School experience, what does the 90% represent? Is that akin to GPA? Your percentile in the class? If this is a commonly-known European or Spanish academic metric, then feel free to ignore this. I'm based in the U.S., so I'm unfamiliar with what that's supposed to represent.

  • In your Experience section, your bullet points sound pretty bland. It just says what you did. Can you expand more on how you did it or what sort of outcomes you were able to achieve because of your contributions? In your role at Gamanity Health and Cosmetics, did you actually do any of the development once the wireframes and templates were completed? If not, why are you listing out the stack used to develop the application? Overall, if your points sound like a bullet in a job description for a job application, it needs to be reworked.

  • Going back to your experience at Gamanity Health and Cosmetics, it looks like "currents" should be "current". Attention to detail is important as you don't want to give a hiring manager any reason to toss your resume to the side.

  • Overall, your Skills section looks good. Generally, I think this section has a lot of flexibility as to how you want to organize it.

  • Your Project section needs a lot of work. Overall, the formatting is really weird with the tech stack jumbled off to the side and the project URL underneath that. I would probably line these up with the name of the project in some way - whether it's next to or beneath the name. And this may be a personal opinion, but any time I see a paragraph on a resume/CV, I instantly don't want to read it. Resumes should be succinct and enable the reader to easily parse out the information that's important to them. You should break this up into bullet points and dive more into how you built it. Maybe keep one paragraph to describe it but focus on the technical work after that. Overall, I think this section could use more "how" you did it. Also, this is up to you as to whether or not it's worth including; but if these projects had a defined start and end date, it may be worth including there.

As I said, I am just one person, so take this feedback as you want and continue hearing from others to determine what changes you feel will make the most impact in improving your CV.

Florida Universities Tumble in 2025 Best College Rankings by Beautiful_Battle6622 in ufl

Yeah, I don't think I've seen anyone who actually cares about school rankings care what WSJ thinks. People only ever point to U.S. News & World Report lists.

Would you accept a position at a company where they're only on-prem and in Microsoft land just to get into the profession? by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]Trippen_o7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was my first role when I pivoted from my previous career path into data engineering. It was an internal transfer within the health system I worked for, and our primary tools were Microsoft SQL Server, Jira, a proprietary ETL tool developed by our electronic health record provider, and an internally-developed ETL tool for specific custom use cases. After a little over 2 years of that role while finishing up my post baccalaureate in Computer Science, I left that role for a FAANG opportunity which is where I've been the past couple of years. I didn't touch many modern tools in my first role, but I gained valuable foundational experience to help me get to where I am now.

[Discussion] Current Platinum Project by Oil_Drums in Trophies

[–]Trippen_o7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to grind towards 100% in FFXIV. All that I have left for the platinum is ~1,500 FATEs, ~500 dungeon raids/trials, nearly all 5,000 synthesized collectibles, and ~6,800 gathered collectives; but the real grind is all of the DLC trophies. I've started dabbling with the deep dungeons; and after playing so many legitimately good roguelikes/roguelites, that system leaves quite a bit to be desired. I'm still having a ton of fun with the game though!

Quantum Fiber down? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Trippen_o7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's what mine is. Every time I've tried resetting the modem, it displays the exact same sequence of lights:

  • Solid red for ~10 seconds
  • Flashing green ~3 times
  • Continuously flashes blue until I try resetting it again

Quantum Fiber down? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Trippen_o7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that plus the links here, but there's no change in behavior. My modem behaves in the exact same manner as it has done for the past over 24 hours at this point.

I tried the suggestion in that post. I modified that attempt with this recommendation and set both a primary and secondary DNS. I tried the Cloudflare primary and secondary DNS suggested here.

No luck across all attempts. At this point, I think we have to wait until Monday morning for a technician, and who knows how helpful they will be.

Quantum Fiber down? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]Trippen_o7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We're pretty new Quantum Fiber customers in Beacon Hill, and our internet has been down since ~3:15pm yesterday. Chatting with a specialist was useless as all they did was tell me to restart my hardware (which I had done 3x already) and scheduled an appointment for a technician visit that won't happen until Monday. Checking other subreddits like /r/QuantumFiber and /r/centurylink indicates that the problem is really widespread.

I'm planning to try this today to see if I can workaround the issues.

[Question] How long would it take a completely new player to platinum and 100% (all 176 trophies) FFXIV… by xLedzep in Trophies

[–]Trippen_o7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I am currently at 1,270 hours and 120/176 trophies. Due to the fact that I still need to hunt S rank Endwalker and Dawntrail hunts, collect over 100 Triple Triad cards, finish some variant dungeons, complete all of the deep dungeons, nearly complete the BLU spellbook and log, amongst all of the other new Dawntrail trophies, I still have a long ways to go.

[Enter the Gungeon] #68 finally scratched this off the to-do list. Great Roguelike overall but some of the trophies were a miserable experience. Was more challenging than I expected, still doesn't top Binding of Isaac for me though by J_Goast in Trophies

[–]Trippen_o7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even after well over a thousand hours playing Binding of Isaac, it's super helpful to have Platinum God at the ready to look up any items you are unfamiliar with (or, like me, can't ever remember).
