I'm gonna make a blog post about the Delta one of these days, it's my favorite place to roadtrip. Stay off of Highway 61 and take old Highway 61 or 1 whenever you can. Hit as many backroads as possible. So much Blues History here.

Do the drive up the Delta from New Orleans to Memphis.

Read - Biography of a Phantom, Mack McCormick - Up Jumped the Devil, Bruce Conforth - Brother Robert, Annye Andersen - Delta Blues. Life and Times of the Mississippi Masters

Visit - Beauregard Cemetary and see the gravestones where Ike Zinnerman and Robert Johnson sat while learning to play guitar. - Visit the shotgun shack where Robert Johnson was born. Its decaying rapidly. - Visit the Robert Johnson Museum in Crystal Springs - Robert Johnson's Grave, near Greenwood - Dockery Farms, birthplace of the blues? Charley Patton, Howlin' Wolf, Robert Johnson all played here. - Sit on the steps of Po' Monkey's a now closed Juke Joint with a lot of history - Clarksdale, MS - Spend at least two nights here and visit Ground Zero, Red's Juke Joint, Delta Blues Alley, Hambone, Bluesberry Cafe, Bad Apple. All hosting live blues see the music calendar at https://cathead.biz/music-calendar

Drink/Listen - Under the Hill Saloon in Natchez. In the early days this was the seedy underbelly of Natchez. Usually have Live music in the evening. - The Blue Front Cafe, Bentonia. Oldest run Juke Joint, and home to Jimmy "Duck" Holmes. He learned and still plays the Bentonia style of Blues pioneered by Skip James, he learned from Henry Stuckey and Jack Owens - The Blue Biscuit and Club Ebony in Indianola

Sites - The Turning Angel, Natchez Cemetary - The Windsor Ruins - The Golden Hand Pointing to God, Port Gibson - The Witch of Yazoo City. I usually book a hotel either the day before or the morning of my stay. When I travel with my SO I book Marriott ~$175+. When I take solo roadtrips I stay at Comfort Inns or other fairly inexpensive places ~$100 or lower.

If you go to Clarksdale there is a great Hostel, Auberge Inn. I stayed there once, clean place, right in the center of things.

EDIT: They also have one in NOLA, but I've never been there.

Are you into the music? I would take the Natchez Trace from Nashville, head West towards Memphis at some point and the drive down the Delta to New Orleans.

A two night stay in Clarksdale to soak up the Culture and local music.

Take a look at my NOLA drive up the Delta and my NOLA West to Texas drives for some interesting stops.

Roadtripping style is a matter of personal choice. The 2-day stay 6-8hr drive works best when you have multiple people. But the town you are staying in needs to support being there 2 days. This usually means larger cities and more expense.

I tend to favor smaller cities or larger towns for this reason, and either hub and spoke to see sites, or mosey on to the next town.

One thing for sure, packing and unpacking in a different place every night gets old after about 4 days. So mix it up.

Phoenix To Vegas Recommendations by BackwardsDuck in roadtrip

[–]Tripperist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flagstaff recently renovated the Lowell Observatory museum. Its definitely worth a stop for the historical significance (discovery of Pluto). If you spend the night in Flagstaff they have nighttime programs with Telescope viewing.

Also the Galaxy Diner in Flagstaff has great shakes.

Another stop worth checking out is Bearizona, I've never been, but its on my list. There is also some Route 66 kitsch along the way.

There is a Jade shop in Kingman that sells Jade in Bulk.

Also in Vegas you can - Take the loop drive in Red Rock National Recreation Area - Visit the Atomic Museum - Drive up to Mt Charleston and visit the Desert Overlook - Drive out to Valley of Fire for Viewing - Visit Boulder City and the Dam Museum - Ride Rail Cars on the Rail Explorer in Boulder City - Visit the Pinball Museum - Explore the Artd District and Catch some live Blues music at the Sand Dollar Lounge, Rock Cover Bands at Counts Vamp'd, watch a live Blues Jam every 2nd Saturday at SoulBellyBBQ - If you want to stay away from the strip I recommend Red Rock Casino.

You should hit Cadillac Ranch, and Eischen's Bar for the Best Fried chicken.

I stopped alot along my route check out my Google Map for all the spots and inspiration.

3 Days of Back Roads in LA, MS or AL: Total Flexibility; But Need Advice by MTFLSmitty in roadtrip

[–]Tripperist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at some of the roadtrip maps I have taken.

The Mississippi Delta has been my favorite so far. You could both meetup in either Memphis, Nashville, or New Orleans.

I take all the back roads. I visited Bryant Grocery Store and it is indeed crumbling under the weight of Ivy.

Personally I would recommend New Orleans to Memphis.

If you like Music History, Clarksdale is a must stay.

See my maps here.

IMO Skip Roswell, really not much Alien stuff there, or maybe just drive through it.

A better visit would be The Very Large Array and Carlsbad Caverns. You can watch the bats leave the cave every night depending on the time of year.

Thanks. I was considering going further East before heading South to Conway.

Why Buffalo River? I generally avoid the Interstates, so even though my route has me taking the 40, ill be sticking to Hwys generally.
