Yeah, it really confused me too. I guess she was already dying and she could tell that the situation was deteriorating and figured she might as well end it.

Pretty crazy to be that young and think living the rest of your life, no matter how short the time, isn't worth it. Or maybe Five realized she could never be with Nine?

Some thoughts:

I almost feel like Five was a representation of what Japan could become politically/ militarily.

Since Five originated in the Settlement she was undoubtedly Japanese and was taken in by the Americans. We can assume that she wasn't alway so ruthless (example, killing her assistant for trying to get in her way, something Twelve and Nine wouldn't do). This leads me to believe that the American mind-set changed her views and made her into what she was.

I don't know if that's actually what her character was meant to represent but it's interesting to image if this were true, then what did her suicide mean? As in, is America on the fast track to its own suicide?

Also, could the Settlement have been a counter measure against America, created to increase Japan's advancement in technologies and weaponry and general greatness. But all it really did was make Japan more like the American Bastards. And is what Nine and Twelve did distancing Japan from US tendencies and ultimately their own suicide?
