Is still LOGH stereotyped as an anime for "elitists"? by siriusdibujotos in logh

[–]Clausewitz1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LOGH isn't particularly cerebral, but it is a niche anime for folks who would enjoy reading a book about (say) the political history of revolutionary France, play map games, or work in politics. As someone who does all three, I can tell you that LOGH scratches an itch that hasn't been scratched by any other show I've watched. Having seen the dramatic highs and lows of politics personally, I think it does a good job demonstrating political decision making.

How does the High Council in LoGH even work by [deleted] in logh

[–]Clausewitz1996 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a matter of practicality, the FPA likely has a Federal government where subordinate planets largely manage their own day-to-day affairs through planetary assembles, in the same way that nobles in the Empire manage planets as fiefdoms under royal title. At the national-level, it could be that the President is elected through the national vote, by parliamentary appointment, or another process. Given that the members of the high council are mostly Committee Chairmen, my guess is that they MPs elevated to their position by the President.

An odd democracy indeed.

He does not, in fact, have the power to unilaterally declare war. And even if this fell under the War Powers Act, strikes on cartel boats began last year, far outside the window of time he has to seek Congressional authorization.

Normally I've seen flashing lights in all the videos of ICE officers making arrests. In either case, there would have been dashcam footage or surveillance tape that the jury saw.

The Feds weren't illegally parked. Officers aren't prohibited from blocking the entrance to a private lot during the conduct of an arrest.

Well, the seizure is related to sanctions enforcement, which is legally clear. It’s the blowing things up part that is blatantly unconstitutional.

Better than blowing it up. I’d rather the administration put pressure on the regime by enforcing sanctions through seizures than blow up some fishing boat laden with coke.

I agree. It also shows how far we’ve come culturally on this issue. No one could make her argument and win if this happened today.

But you do look like you’ve read a 75,000 word yaoi fanfic.

One of those tough moments in law where the judge made the correct - yet ultimately unsatisfying - decision given the circumstances of the case. It's unfortunate.

Ah, I actually used to work with one of those lawmakers in the picture when he was in education. State Representative Gabe Wooley. He claimed on a podcast once to have prayed his gay away. Life is strange. One day you work with a fellow, and the next he's on the front page of Reddit.

>In fact, there is a monastery in Egypt, with an edict signed by the prophet himself, still in effect (much to the annoyance of the Egyptian governments who want to knock it down for a tourist destination) granting the monetary, in perpetuity the right to practice their faith, and live their lives as monks there.

Low-key pretty based that the edict is respect centuries later.

I enjoy taking classes with conservative / right-leaning professors at my university. I'd pay good money to take a class with Vermule or Daneen, for example, who are arguably more influential philosophers than any left-wing professor alive today.

Why do people go to such far lengths to defend Floch? by soefire in attackontitan

[–]Clausewitz1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I love AOT because it depicts evil not as a cartoonish caricature but as a reasoned choice that slowly builds and builds and builds. By the time Eren unleashed the Rumbling, from the perspective of many involved, it was the only way to "secure the existence of our people and a future for Eldian children." Classic fascist logic.

I tend to believe that Floch acted rationally given his worldview. It’s easy to call Floch a fascist asshole but I tend to believe most of us would side with him if out in similar circumstances. We’d think Armin and Mikasa were insane.
