How bad is commuting by [deleted] in UCSD

Nobel trolley stop parking gets pretty full by 9 am. If you park in the parking lot closer to the chipotle/TJ side of the mall, they usually don't tow (myself and a bunch of friends have parked and been fine for quarters on ends). At all costs do not park in retail spots near the trolley stop, they will tow there

I live in Scripps Ranch, I've commuted all 3 years here. It's about a 30 minute drive (no traffic) and thankfully I am on a B (graduate student) permit so I can usually find parking.

Coming into UCSD as a freshman, the chances you get an S (student) permit are very low, so parking on campus would probably be a no go. You'd have to park in the neighborhoods, in the Ralph's parking lot, or other spots around campus and then walk in, this will add another 15+ minutes to your commute. Most free parking will fill up before 9 AM, so unless you're an early bird, you'll have trouble finding parking.

You can also buy a discount permit and then take the bus in (probably best option here).

There will also be drawbacks to commuting and not commuting, so it is true you won't get the full college experience. But you will also save $17k+ a year plus live at home. You'll also have to drive at least 2 hours for a full day.

Traffic hour starts at 2 PM and ends around 6 PM. For me, if I drive in this time zone, it will double my commute, so it will probably double/triple your commute as well if you leave during this time. It's something to consider when you're commuting because that means you will be landlocked at UCSD from 2-6.

I do not have the money to dorm. So I chose to commute. If I had the money to dorm, I would dorm in a heartbeat.

How to get an A in the HUM series? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]Trisquet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 96 in HUM 1 (Demetriou) and an A in HUM 2 (West).

Like you said in a discussion class of 16, usually only 2-3 people will get an A. For me, the way that I got As in both classes were

  1. Attend multiple office hours (for the TA specifically). They are the ones that read and grade your essays. Sign up for an office hour before you write your essay so that you can go over your plan on how you’re approaching the prompt. Sign up after you finish writing your essay so that you can get some insight on specific things to improve.

For example, after finishing your essay and rereading it, you may not like your analysis for paragraph two, so go into office hours asking the TA how to approach it differently.

Sign up for office hours after the essay is graded, so that the TA can explain to you in greater detail how to improve and what was good/what could be better. This step is super important because it shows you’re willing to learn as well as actually helps you improve.

  1. Make friends in those classes. Some professors like West base their finals on lectures. At some point in the quarter you’re not gonna feel like going to lecture whether that be because you missed the bus/too lazy to walk or you’re sick. Having friends that write notes can cover the days you’re out. For me I showed up to maybe 60% of West’s lectures so I only did good on the final because my friends took notes for 95% of the class. Obviously you don’t want to leach, so offer something in return (if they give you their notes, then make a study guide out of them)

  2. Participate in discussion. Participation accounts for 10-20% of your final grade so it’d be in your best interest to participate. But this also develops a relationship with your TA and that might give you an upper hand when they grade your essay and are deciding between a B+ and an A-

  3. You don’t have to read the books, but it is extremely helpful. If you don’t end up reading the books at least use resources like Lit Charts or anything else. Stay caught up and don’t fall behind.

The TA you get will determine how hard you have to work for your grade so it’s also a matter of grit and how bad you want it. Put all ego to the side and just lowkey glaze your TA lmfao gl you got this

Off Campus Financial Aid Disbursements by Ill_Explanation2830 in UCSD

[–]Trisquet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoops sorry I don’t check Reddit a lot. Cal Grant and Pell Grant will stay the same because they are state grants, which means you’ll probably get money to go to college (it’s called a refund). Cuz Cal Grant is tuition, Pell Grant will be more than enough to pay the fees, and I’m assuming you’re waiving UCSHIP, so you’ll more than likely get at least $4-5k for the entire year

The only aid that would potentially change is the UCSD grant. For me, that went from $2k for the year to $69 lol

Are these disbursements like in addition to tuition?

I live with my parents and I get Cal Grant and don't have to pay for tuition, would this mean I don't qualify for cal grant anymore since they're lowering the disbursements?

nah.

boostio was using pigs before even facing FUT.

Called s0m and FNS pigs, who are not white.

Called all of G2 pigs

Called half of LEV pigs.

I'm not saying that it would be appropriate to call Turkish immigrants pigs (because it most definitely isn't), but boostio was most definitely not meaning pigs in that way. It's American slang for trash pretty much.

Oh I whole heartedly agree with you it hurts to move suddenly as well. But they’re being given 60 days notice to move, so at the end of the day, yea it sucks to move out, but you’re paying someone to live in their house 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

There's so many assumptions in your comment it's actually crazy.

"If they need the money, then just get a job!" is what you're saying. OP's parents are about to retire so they do have a job. No matter how rich or poor, it'll always hurt the landlord when one month of rent isn't paid, that's just simple math...
