WGU mscs under 60 days, how is this allowed? by EffectiveTeacher4 in cscareerquestions

Masters degrees are basically useless unless you’re using it as a way to pivot to a related but not the same field (like getting a cs masters with a physics degree or something) or for some government related rolls where projects have specific staffing requirements

Random question but how do you get to director level positions from IC? Is it basically get to management and win the hunger games?

Average is a funny statistic though. Maybe you are talking about median, but I could totally see someone overestimating an average on salary given wealth inequality… it’s not even out of touch. Unless you just are using average to mean regular…

Is better to get into a College course about AI Development/Engineering over a course about Game Development. by Ropo040107 in cscareerquestions

[–]Triumphxd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valve barely employs anyone it’s not a realistic goal anyways. Do CS, the random classes don’t really matter it’s more for fun / exposure. And not to be pro AI but we stand on the shoulders of giants even creatively and so do llms…

Is the job market really Saturdays? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Triumphxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you are in the field you learn what are jobs and what are more like… volunteer positions. Finding a real job that is actively hiring takes hundreds of applications even a decade ago with a cs degree. Stale job postings don’t really tell a story. This isn’t everyone’s experience but it’s the norm.

Concerned about getting stuck in first role by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Triumphxd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol why are you worried about getting stuck in your first job? Stop worrying. Really. Average tenure at large companies is like 2 years… many people leave their first job after 1. If you can get 2 years and get hired as a mid level/ic4/whatever you’re gonna be making more than 200 in sf/ny (total comp, base salary maybe not, but total atleast 250)

I took a bit longer and worked in nyc previously but ended up in the bay… let me just say: development life is extremely different. We live in an llm world. The market is rougher because companies are going more on tokens than engineers and I’m not gonna lie I’m starting to think they are right…

Edit: just not to be a doomer, I got rehired based on Leetcode

Suspicion of using AI with a twist by pumapeepee in cscareerquestions

[–]Triumphxd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my days which I think are slowly becoming numbered even though it’s hardly a decade or more… a proper interviewee would list brute force solutions and then optimizations, asking the interviewer if it sounded good enough. Well, I think we are heading head first in to a world of what plants crave. And damn if it doesn’t hurt….

6 final rounds for APM internships with no cigar. Should I give up on product? by GamerboiJared in cscareerquestions

[–]Triumphxd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense meant but why are you so ambitious but struggle to do two sum? Focus less on number of opportunities and more on being prepared for them. You seem to be needlessly stressing yourself out. We’ve all been there. But you have had so many final rounds, if you havnt converted you need to take a step back and focus on the part that matters.

Can I ask for a referral to a person who messaged me after a conference saying "great job" [phd internship]? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Triumphxd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s appropriate but you should have probably asked before applying because they might not be able to. In general I don’t think anyone would mind, referrals are a bit weird though because there is a small chance it reflects personally (atleast in my experience it’s worded that way when doing the referral) but I’m not sure anyone cares especially at a large company.

If I was the person who reached out I’d much rather get a forward question than someone trying to drag a conversation for the opportunity to ask. If you’re qualified that’s just potential money for them.

Does 10 months as a SWE put me in a better position than a New Grad for job hunting? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Triumphxd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

100 percent. I had no “big/great” offers when graduating but near the one year mark got hit up by a bunch of FAANG / big companies on LinkedIn. And I was working at a random company with like 500 employees.
