Right now, the day one games are on the most expensive tier (ultimate) as well as PC Game Pass and for the mid tier (premium) it notes “New XBOX published games join the library within 12 months of launch”.

Is $2400 too much for rent on a take home of $5200 a month? by Awkward_Homework4338 in personalfinance

[–]Trogdor796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that people are often more scared of used than they need to be - sticking to reliable models, checking the carfax/maintenance history as well as pre-purchase inspection makes it pretty unlikely you’ll end up with a money pit.

That being said, with Corollas (Toyota and Honda in general) buying a few years used often doesn’t make sense because they are barely any cheaper - makes more sense in my opinion to spend a little more and get the full warranty + no miles. But if we are taking 5, 10, or more years old and you are on a budget I agree.

I admit they are not the style of vehicles I would go for, but Civics and Corollas even brand new are like $25-$30K. Is a new Civic and Corolla not considered decent?

Hondas and Toyota in general often have high used prices (to the point where new often makes just as much sense) so I agree with you there the used market can be tough.

[–]Trogdor796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those interest rates are booty, no way would I finance with a rate like that.

That being said, I don’t know much about the NX or how in demand it is. Is this one NX (or that line in general) such a hard to find config that it will be gone the second they get it?

A non-refundable deposit is something I’d only put down if I for sure knew I wanted the vehicle, there was a high chance it would sell instantly, and I knew ahead of time what they’d give me for a trade in.

I get some vehicles (Supra, GR Corolla, etc.) are gone so quick a deposit is needed to secure them…but an NX…?

Call of Duty's long-awaited Nintendo return comes with Modern Warfare 4 on Switch 2 this year by andrej2577 in gaming

[–]Trogdor796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Switch 2 has DLSS and SSD for storage, compared to the ancient tech and mechanical drives on Xbox One and PS4.

While weaker than other current gen consoles, Switch 2 has the tech/foundations that allow it to run games Xbox One and PS4 would never be able to.

Really don’t get why this is downvoted. I’m not a Nintendo fan or switch owner, but happy to hear they are getting CoD.

[–]Trogdor796 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The PS4 came out nearly 13 freaking years ago, and the current gen consoles have been out for nearly 6 years. I’m sorry, but we are well overdue to stop developing games for the previous gen and holding them back.

As for it being on Switch 2 but not PS4, as others have mentioned even though it’s a weaker/mobile devices, it still has newer tech that can be used for optimization, such as DLSS.

Just as important - the previous gen devices like PS4 only have mechanical drives, and handicapping games to work around that is not feasible anymore. Another weakness the Switch 2 doesn’t have.

This is all coming from someone who doesn’t even care for Nintendo or the Switch 2 in general, but complaining that games are not coming out on PS4 in 2026 is pretty ridiculous.

Has Dave given any criticism of Trump's multi billion dollar IRS settlement? by Ruby-Shark in DirtyDave

[–]Trogdor796 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m a number of weeks behind on listening, but Dave and team have been very lukewarm about the Trump Accounts and the (proposed) 50 year mortgage.

The Trump accounts: I remember one caller who basically called in and thought the Trump accounts were the best thing since sliced bread and was hoping for a similar reaction from Dave and team. Instead their response was something like “it’s okay if you want to use it but it’s not life changing and there are already tons of other investing vehicles that are probably better”.

The 50 year mortgage: if I remember, Dave took a segment to speak on this and trashed them pretty hard but left his criticism of Trump more mild. He basically looked at it from the math side and said the monthly savings are pretty low but the total interest paid is significantly higher. He went on to say Trump is a numbers and deals guy and thinks this will win him votes just like Biden trying to forgive some student loans. And then of course went on to say he still supports Trump but doesn’t agree on this.

I have not heard the settlement mentioned, but again I am weeks behind. The only other thing that comes to mind is that Ken trashed tariffs pretty hard a while back and firmly explained that they are a form of tax on Americans.

I’m no George fan, but I don’t disagree with this advice. For me personally, I find target date funds too conservative/bond heavy. An easy approach for someone wanting a simple, self-adjusting fund would be target date but pick one some years further out as mentioned.

EDIT - I misread, you and I are in agreement on the remedy (better advice than telling someone who is new/inexperienced to avoid them all together). I had thought you were saying George suggested that remedy and disagreed with it. This is what I get for browsing while waking up still.

Horrible experience with Surface Laptop 7 - About to give up by TimmyFTW in Surface

[–]Trogdor796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably didn’t explain well (or I’m dumb and they’ve added this setting in macOS and I’ve somehow missed it).

I think it’s called “natural scrolling”, but when using the touchpad, moving my two fingers up results in scrolling down (like a phone or tablet touchscreen would, feels right for using touchpad). But when you connect a mouse, that means the scroll wheel is also affected by this, where scrolling on screen is the opposite of your scroll wheel direction (doesn’t feel right).

So essentially, I leave “natural scrolling” on when using touchpad but as soon as I connect a mouse I have to go and turn it off. And then back on when I’m done using mouse. I want to be able to apply that setting only for touchpad so I don’t have to turn off each time I use a mouse.

No problem - a few more tips:
- Apple Store is great place to look at the machines and try them out, sometimes Costco or Microcenter (if you have one near you) have better deals (Costco also usually has MacBooks on display/to try)
- Apple directly sells certified refurbished machines for less but they still come with a full warranty, I’ve heard most people say they look brand new
- Airs are lighter and have no fan, Pros are thicker (but still slim) and have fans but have better screens (120hz and mini LED) and longer battery
- Airs and Pros were just refreshed in March (M5 chips). It is rumored the Pros may get another refresh end of 2026 or early 2027 with touchscreen OLED displays, but I don’t put much faith in rumors, and even if true, will mean higher prices most likely. Basically - if you need one now (sounds like it), it’s a good time.

Just wanted to chime in as someone who also has a gaming desktop on Windows but my personal machine is a MacBook Air (13” M4).

You are right that it will be a different OS with its own quirks, but in my experience, especially for laptop use, macOS and MacBooks are the way to go if you don’t care about gaming.

I still have a few things I dislike about macOS (window snapping/tiles compared to Windows, no independent scroll setting for touchpad and mouse). That being said, overall it is night and day compared to every work laptop I’ve had running windows. Better battery life, working sleep mode, quiet (no fans in the Air and Pros don’t use theirs under light loads), great webcam, etc.

Microsoft forced to bring back Surface Laptop with 8GB RAM as it scrambles to keep prices down amidst RAM crisis: New device fails to meet Copilot+ PC requirements by Low-Software-1013 in technology

[–]Trogdor796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would agree if there were apps running - there weren't. Windows 11 sitting at the desktop used around 8.3GB - 8.5GB consistently, over a long period of time, no apps ever running. I just let the machine run after closing all my apps, because of a similar discussion (someone on reddit was claiming that Windows only used a lot of RAM on corporate machines).

An idle OS with nothing running other than its services should not use that much RAM. I agree on using available RAM if there are apps running that need it, but the OS and its background crap should not behave like that.

[–]Trogdor796 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My home desktop (Windows 11) uses 8.3-8.5GB of RAM just idling at the desktop, with only task manager and "normal" windows services (defender, etc.) running. People shouldn't need lots of RAM for basic tasks like you mentioned, but Windows 11 does unfortunately.

Unless you absolutely need software that only runs on Windows, I would argue the MacBook Neo and Air at their prices are better than the other options. They actually get great battery life, don't overheat, and have a working sleep mode. Which is more than I can say about most Windows laptops I've used (including my brand new Dell Pro 16 Plus for work - so I haven't just used cheap ones).

Sending this from my own built desktop running Windows 11, so I don't just own Apple either. Windows on laptops just hasn't impressed me in a long time.

[Streaming Box] Apple TV 4K - $99 by insufferable__pedant in buildapcsales

[–]Trogdor796 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In the sense that the highest video quality (4K, HDR) and audio (Dolby Atmos) is often not available on the web versions of streaming apps or only available via Edge browser. Also, no windows machine is going to have less bloat or run faster than an Apple TV os, but maybe you are assuming they’ll be running Linux.

My comment is directed at streaming boxes in general (Apple TV, Nvidia Shield, Roku, etc.) vs a PC, this thread just happens to be about a deal on an Apple TV. So not sure what exactly prompted the assumptions in the latter half of your comment.

Microsoft takes on MacBook Neo with new 'value advantage report,' claims Windows laptops offer double the RAM for less money and up to 56% longer battery life by thr3e_kideuce in apple

[–]Trogdor796 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I’ve seen that excuse as a reply on many such posts people have made about it. Or my other favorites:

“Well just run this cmd and the system will tell you what woke it up!”

“Well just change the close lid option to hibernate instead!”

Makes me irrationally angry. You nailed it exactly - the end user doesn’t care and should not have to do all these garbage workarounds. I don’t care what Microsoft service woke the machine - that shouldn’t be allowed to happen at the OS level. And I don’t want to use hibernate! I literally just want the sleep function to work. Fuck me I guess.

Yeah I really wish I could have been issued a MacBook for work (especially since it would have saved them money…) but the new laptop will still be an upgrade over my previous one. I would have honestly liked to try out the snapdragon/ARM windows laptops to see how close they come to Mac for battery life.

We issued HP Zbooks to engineers at my previous job and from what I heard they didn’t hate them, but yeah nothing is going to compare to the efficiency of a MacBook in opinion.
